Communal Ratings and Reviews
Since Communal has opened the food and service has declined. At the beginning, the original Chef was amazing! Unfortunately, since then we have seen major inconsistencies with the service/food and recently had a horrible experience. It was my fiances birthday, and i surprised him by inviting friends and family to dinner. It was such an embarrassing experience though because everyone was more than disappointed.
First, we waited over an hour and a half to eat. The server brought out starters and then didn't check in with us until our food was served. When we finally got our food it was COLD. Which was a disappointment because at this point we were super hungry and because of the agonizing wait we were not excited about the idea of having to send food back. We initially told the server when some of the sides were cold (since they were the first to get to our table) and when he brought back a plate that was still cold after we had complained we gave up.
The worst part was paying. I told the server who was together and who was separate, but unbeknownst to me all he did was split up the TOTAL of the full bill ($480) and split it up between the 7 of us. I would have complained at the time, but didn't realize this fact until after we left. This was really upsetting because some of my fiances friends specifically only ordered one entree since they were concerned with cost and so they ended up having to pay more than what they ordered.
Last, when i called to communicate my frustrations the "lead server" talked over me the whole time while i was venting my frustrations. He said i should have said something, and basically insinuated it was my fault. I asked him to take my info down to give to a manager, and still haven't got a call. I have recommended this place for work meetings, friends, family, and i will now have to tell everyone it is not the same and to stop going there. It seems like they cant accommodate group's, and overcharge for barely decent food.
In years past I have frequented communal, dining there monthly if not more. My most recent trip back was extremely disappointing. The food lacked flavor and Innovation, and something very simple like cooking a steak could not even be accomplished by the current chef. I had to send mine back twice and even then it was still not cooked correctly. Sadly I will never be returning to communal, they command a price that should put them well above where they are with our current flavors and innovation.
Dinner was fabulous. Portions were large enough to share and a good value. Food was interesting and tasty. We chose halibut and two veg sides to share. Beverage selection was good, especially for the locale. I returned two days later for lunch; that meal was disappointing. Menu was limited. There were lots of salad options but I do not care for salads. I chose a fried chicken sandwich that was woefully underseasoned. Value for lunch is not great, even had the food been good.
Nothing really stood out to me personally as exceptional. The communal potatoes were kind of boring as well as the steak. We had people that went with us and it was not their first time. They said this specific meal wasn't great and they have had way better in the past. To me it all looked nice but I wasn't that impressed with my two favorite items (steak and potatoes).
LOVED the food. The service was great, too.
One little hitch - we were there for a business meal. Upon our arrival, the hostess was going to seat us at the long table, which patrons share with one another. Because we wanted to talk business and because of the sensitive nature of that business, that wasn't going to work for us. We asked to be moved. It took about 10 minutes, but they kindly relocated us.
I understand (and even like) the idea of the communal table. But it doesn't work for everyone.
The food, however, DOES. It's amazing. Just creative enough, and just "normal" enough that everyone will be pleased. EAT HERE!
There were four of us in our party. My teenagers and husband really enjoyed their hamburgers and fries. I enjoyed my fries as well. However, I did not like my lamb burger. Lamb is my favorite meat. I eat it quite often. I would not recommend the lamb burger. However, I would go there again and try a different dish.
Communal has been a favorite of ours in the past but we were disappointed with our most recent visit. The overall quality of the food was not to their usual standards. It may have just been a bad night. The wild boar chops were overcooked and tough and chewy. The charcuterie plate was very limited and not what we had expected for the $20 price tag. To top it off, there was an incident with a smoked salmon entrée served to the couple next to us that I won't go into details about but suffice it to say that my wife was horrified and will not be back. Communal has been one of our favorites in the past but it appears that they may be having some quality issues in the kitchen. The service however was excellent as is the ambience.
Excellent spot for lunch or dinner in Provo
We had a larger group, 7 people, and while the place was not crowded, it was a little tough to hear each other.
Food is thoughtful and very tasty. Little something for everyone - Vegan - gluten free - etc.
Preparation of the food was excellent. I had salmon and it was not overcooked, green beans were perfect (not common as they are usually either over or under done. Flavors made me happy.
They could have been a little better at serving all together, but overall the service level was superior, not intrusive but definitely attentive.
I hope they change up the menu frequently as it is limited and while I am not in town so often, it could get boring fast.
The food was delicious! We were there for lunch and a birthday celebration! Started our meal with the daily pastry which was double chocolate cake and that was a great decision! We made a reservation which I would strongly recommend as the restaurant isn't that big. Enjoy your cozy experience!
