Used to be great. Not anymore. New chef. Very overpriced and over flavored food. Even a simple vegetable dishe like broccolini was drowning in oil, and why ruin a squash dish (which was barely cooked so very hard- not at all roasted like menu said) with a béchamel sauce? We ordered the chicken and asked if we could substitute with different vegetables - and were charged $4.00 extra....which made the chicken entree $40.00 Only Zuni Cafe in San Francisco can get away with a $40 chicken (and it’s worth every penny).
Exploring Provo (from New Orleans) since we will be moving here in May. Found this amazing restaurant with excellent staff that were knowledgeable of their food and wines/beers. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Coming from a foodie city, we were so impressed and excited to be able to eat here again.
Brunch was great. They gave us our own room and it was nice and quieter than the big room. The eggs Benedict was fantastic. We had a nice time.
I’ve been here countless times, always loved my experiences. The other night was not a good one. Which was frustrating, I brought my boyfriend for his 1st time and raved about it to him beforehand.
The Brussels sprouts were burnt, our waiter did offer to replace them and took them off our bill, thank you.
Our starch was brought out a little bit after. Which we ate. We waited over 15 minutes for our protein. So then the potatoes were cold. It was bad service. The sirloin steak was so chewy.
Over all pretty disappointing, especially when paying so much. Seemed like prices have increased lately.
Great fresh food but a little pricey
So unique and good! This place forces us to step out of our comfort zone and try something new. We have never been disappointed
This was our first time. The food was very healthy, fresh and delicious. The service was excellent and there was literally no wait time. The salad was served almost immediately after we ordered. By the time we finished, our vegetables and bass were served. We ordered the chocolate mousse upon finishing our meal and it was served within minutes. We loved our experience and will be back for more.
The smell of the fried food cooking from the kitchen was overwhelming. It was unbearable. It made the whole dining experience really unpleasant. The smell of oily food and food being fried, is awful.
No longer Gluten Friendly. In the past, we've had decent luck with most things on the menu being gluten-free friendly. This time, for Brunch, unless you like eggs, there was almost nothing you could have that was truly gluten-free. Very disappointing! We may give Dinner one more try before abandoning this joint.
Great quality food! Girls luncheon, they all loved the food and will return.
We have always really enjoyed coming here. The ambiance is great. We did make a reservation but they weren't able to seat us for about 30 min after our reservation. And the most of the food we ordered was wonderful as expected. The steak was a little tough and was cold. Otherwise we had a nice evening.
It isn't as good as it use to be. I don't know if there is a new chef or not but I wouldn't recommend it anymore. It was "the best" before but now....
We decided to try Communal's Saturday Brunch and were not disappointed. I ordered the chorizo with fried eggs. The chorizo was not the least bit oily and the egg were done as I like them. The sundried tomatoes enhanced the flavor and the aioli added the finishing touch. I would highly recommend this dish. Reservations are strongly advised even at lunchtime.
Good quality food served without fanfare, good beer and wine list and good service, we will be returning for more dinners.
Amazing little gem in Provo! Everything about Communal is fabulous - the food is to die for! I will definitely be going back as often as possible. Make sure to make a reservation before going.
Great menu and fun atmosphere. A little pricey but if you order smart you don’t have to break the bank. Just save room for dessert! ... or two.

Great experience. Fun concept. Ambiance was fantastic. While I love bold and distinct flavors, it was a little over the top. It almost seems like they’re trying a little too hard.
We had a party of 10. Our food was delicious. We had a variety of things on the menu and it was all great.
The brussel sprouts were outstanding! Also their spatzel with apples from allred orchards was really tasty.
We were just passing through Provo and feel so lucky to have found this special spot. We will find a way to get back for sure. The food was amazing and the service was spectacular!
Service was a little off and felt like we were being rushed out at the end of the night. We were still enjoying our dinner when the waiter hands out dessert menus. Food was decent but a bit hit or miss. The creme brule was more a soup than anything - was not cooked properly as was the molton lava cake. All was a bit hit or miss.

we enjoyed ourselves - we were visitors from NYC and were pleasantly surprised - never sure what to expect from Utah dining. A great find.

My boyfriend and I come to communal a lot, it is probably our favorite special occasion dinner spot! Its easy to make a reservation, service is great, food is AMAZING, and its easy to get to (right by Center Street in Provo). Came here for my birthday this weekend and was not disappointed. Plus, they have a new menu every season, and their new items have been just as good as the old.
We had a reservation for 7, but they had not reserved a table for us, so we had to wait for 30 minutes. When we finally got seated, they were nice to Comp 1 of our small plates due to the wait. I like that. The scallops were good, but the lardon on the charcuterie was a little much. Slices of white, cold fat? Maybe I’m not cool enough for that. It could be me.
But the flank steak, which we ordered medium, was blue and cool - very rare - while it was actually charred abbot on the outside. How does that happen? The steak is sliced before it’s served. YOU CAN SEE THAT IT IS NOT MEDIUM! So we sent it back to cook some more. A few minutes later, it’s back at the table, still bloody and rare. We gave up on medium. Also neither the steak nor the polenta had any salt. None. We had to ask for salt to try to eat the food.
This was our third bad experience at Communal in the past few months. What used to be one of our favorite places has become consistently disappointing. The proteins are not cooked correctly, the seasoning is missed and the servers, while very eager to please, have never, not once, brought us spoons with our coffee. We get the cream and sugar (I guess we’re supposed to tip the bowl to add sugar?) but no spoon. In four years of going there, not one server has provided a spoon with coffee service.
Not sure when we’ll be back. Or if.
Excellent food. Very fresh and prepared perfectly. We had the quail starter, venison, mashed potatoes and the squash. It’s all family style, so we just shared everything. Fabulous!
Went for Brunch. Great menu, coffee was good. Service was okay, no major complaints. I would definitely go back if in the area again.
Went in not knowing what to expect and expectations were exceeded. The space had great energy, and the service was exceptional. Would recommend.
When there for my wife'd birthday, just picked it off the internet. Thought it was going to be pricey but helping size was ample to share. A very nice experience.
Best choice for high value delicious fresh cuisine. We enjoy the knowledgeable staff send the creative chefs. It’s fun to introduce others to Communal and get rave reviews of their experiences. The wine choices are excellent with the food! We will return again and again.
We ordered the cheese plate, all of the veggies on the menu, and all of the potatoes, and they were all SO DELICIOUS! Who knew a vegetarian meal could taste so good?!
Since Communal has opened the food and service has declined. At the beginning, the original Chef was amazing! Unfortunately, since then we have seen major inconsistencies with the service/food and recently had a horrible experience. It was my fiances birthday, and i surprised him by inviting friends and family to dinner. It was such an embarrassing experience though because everyone was more than disappointed.
First, we waited over an hour and a half to eat. The server brought out starters and then didn't check in with us until our food was served. When we finally got our food it was COLD. Which was a disappointment because at this point we were super hungry and because of the agonizing wait we were not excited about the idea of having to send food back. We initially told the server when some of the sides were cold (since they were the first to get to our table) and when he brought back a plate that was still cold after we had complained we gave up.
The worst part was paying. I told the server who was together and who was separate, but unbeknownst to me all he did was split up the TOTAL of the full bill ($480) and split it up between the 7 of us. I would have complained at the time, but didn't realize this fact until after we left. This was really upsetting because some of my fiances friends specifically only ordered one entree since they were concerned with cost and so they ended up having to pay more than what they ordered.
Last, when i called to communicate my frustrations the "lead server" talked over me the whole time while i was venting my frustrations. He said i should have said something, and basically insinuated it was my fault. I asked him to take my info down to give to a manager, and still haven't got a call. I have recommended this place for work meetings, friends, family, and i will now have to tell everyone it is not the same and to stop going there. It seems like they cant accommodate group's, and overcharge for barely decent food.
In years past I have frequented communal, dining there monthly if not more. My most recent trip back was extremely disappointing. The food lacked flavor and Innovation, and something very simple like cooking a steak could not even be accomplished by the current chef. I had to send mine back twice and even then it was still not cooked correctly. Sadly I will never be returning to communal, they command a price that should put them well above where they are with our current flavors and innovation.
Always a good meal at Communal. Fresh, seasonal, delicious dishes. Great wines. Wonderful, friendly service. Always a good time.
It was awesome! Great for business meals. You must try the blue cheese french fries. They are outstanding.
The food and presentation is on par with any major restaurant in San Francisco or LA. Great farm fresh produce, locally sourced ingredients and a cool communal vibe.
Waiter was friendly. Between the four of us we shared three protein entrees and two sides, and that was probably one entree too many. Amazing food! Get the fowl and the pork
