Lunch always seemed to have their "B" Team working, in the kitchen and out front. Now they seem to have put in their "C" Team. That is being generous. Jaime, time you focused on Commonwealth again. Sorry.

As a genuine Anglophile, I was pleased to find this little gem. The atmosphere is great and the service is outstanding. Not to mention the happy hour deals- $3 for an import! Some of the food choices are better than others but I can say without a doubt that the sticky toffee pudding is to die for. I will most certainly be returning.

What a wonderful find! I don't make it to Columbia Heights often, but I was delighted to see Jamie Leeds' name on the menu. We wanted to have the Sunday Roast family-style dinner but it was sold out by the time of our late arrival. So we opted for steak, mashed potatoes and green beans and it was wonderful. Perfect neighborhood-atmosphere place to have dinner with a friend after a busy weekend. Kudos!

This is a great place for brunch! I brought my mother here for it and she LOVED it!! We both had the steak and eggs with a side a bacon (just one side, we were able to split it) and the eggs were perfectly scrambled and the steak was perfectly made to my liking!! LOVE IT!

The food was disappointing, especially the pancake type dish. It was barely any food for a lot of money, and it wasn't anything special. I was disappointed.

I ordered the fish and chips and was highly disappointed. The fish was bland and too think; the batter was similarly tasteless. My boyfriend ordered the chorizo burger and enjoyed it. We shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, which was delicious. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but they have a good beer list so I might visit again for happy hour.

A frustrating experience overall. The greeting person did not care about whether or not I had a reservation, and he also shrugged when I asked if we could move to a bigger table after we were given a minuscule table in a empty and freezing dinning area. At the table service was good, but the sweet potato soup tasted like hot milk cream with some green vegetable flavor, and the Fish and Chips, were mostly chips, with two tiny pieces of fish that were almost burned. I recommend the word “Gastro” be dropped from the name of the place, it was misleading to me.

We go to Commonwealth at least once a week because were addicted to their fish and chips. However, we love brunch, lunch, and late nights there as well. The atmosphere is great. It's generally quiet during brunch and louder in the evenings.

Although the waitress appeared to be having a bad day, she did make a wonderful drink recommendation (Kentucky Cobbler = yum, bourbon just the way I like it). And the Bishop's collar is awesome.

A friend and I met in Columbia Heights to catch up and try out Commonwealth. I was surprised to see so many people seated already. It seemed some were finishing brunch. I asked the server for a recommendation to which he replied "Can you make up your mind? There is only one of me and twenty-five people so..." Not the best greeting but hey he is cranky and did not feel like describing the dishes. In the end I went with the BBQ pork sandwich. The sandwich was good but the red cabbage coleslaw was dry and tasteless (even a hit of citrus would have brought some life). I can deal with the less than stellar service and the fair food but I was pretty sad that the Irish coffee was so bad. Stick to basic drinks at Commonwealth.

The service was prompt, friendly and attentive as well as patient with some of us having trouble making decisions :) I really enjoy the menu here, both the standard and the specials. The UmCommon Burger when we were there was a Spanish sausage burger - interesting and very good. The bittersweet chocolate pudding was fabulous as always.

Being a pub-fan, I was really looking forward to a good fish & chips but was disappointed in the quality. The fish was exceptionally greasy and the chips were just soggy in the grease. The only other sides were also fried and the two bites of carrot did not balance out the texture.

My second time at this restaurant and both were very good. Good service and nice atmosphere. The food was all very good the snacks, main courses and deserts. A really excellent selection of draft beers. Not too noisy we could have a pleasant conversation without yelling which is hard to come buy sometimes now at eating establishments. Happy Hour prices on drinks are good. I will return again for sure.

Very sweet staff with a friendly bartender who made us feel at home even though it isn't a neighborhood bar for us. Excellent beer selection that is always changing. It was comfortable and casual, and a good place to meet friends. The food is below par -- not as good as at Hanks* (same owner), but it still is a good place to meet, and have a beer and a few apps. *two of us had the fish and chips -- nothing special: bland and a little soggy on the fish, the fries were average. My husband's fish of the day was dry/overcooked, but the 'scotch eggs' were terrific.

The serivce was terrible for Sunday brunch. I was very disappointed. It took 10 min just to get waters, our bread never came and it took wellover one hour to get our food. The waiters (yes, we had a couple due to the disoranization) were very unapologetic. They just kept saying "sorry, we're just really busy." Well it's Sunday brunch in DC, what did you expect?? The acted like they'd never served a busy Sunday brunch before. I was embarrased that I had brought my out of town guests there. I will never go back.

The food (brunch) was average to above average, but certainly overpriced for what it was. The real deal breaker was how incredibly long it took to get our meals. Commonwealth has been open long enough to have experience working at capacity. It just shouldn't take that long to get 3 egg dishes and a salmon bagel out (nearly an hour in the end). The breakfast-type portion of the menu is very limited as well, not a lot of options. This experience is right on par with the other 3-4 times I've been here, it is a very average restaurant with "fancy" prices.

I'e been to Commonwealth a few times, and the service has always been a bit spotty, but okay. Had a reservation and they stuck us by the service kiosk by the rear, even though there were other tables available. The waiter wasn't helpful in explaining the menu, and made no suggestions even when asked. The food was delicious, but the portions were petite.

this place is fairly avergae. 2 standouts here tho; The French Fries and the beer selection - both exceeded expectations. I think the ambiance is ok, the service is nothing special and the food is adequate. I live in Arlington, but I would assume you can find cheaper pub food somewhere else accompanied by a more authentic, less contrived experience.

A reliably good place for a small group and although the noise can escalate it does not dampen a good conversation. At first glace the menu may not seem to offer a lot of options but the rotating list of entrées and the use of seasonal ingredients has yielded consistently good meals. One can not go wrong with the fish and chips or the burgers for a quick bite to eat.

Apps were disappointing - they were out of the sweetbreads, fried oysters were soggy and raw, garlic shrimp was super fishy smelling/tasting. Fried oysters had a bunch of oyster liquor pouring out of them as well - I like oyster liquor and oysters on-the-half-shell, but fried oysters shouldn't be raw. Our main orders came (my computer won't spell entree correctly), and the bangers n' mash was way too sweet - the sausage and the gravy. Glazed chicken was also super-sweet. I used to cook, so I consider myself pretty knowledgeable. Outside seating was good, but a drunken man came by singing very loudly and causing a scene - then a group of teens stole a man's bike and they came running by w/ him in pursuit. None of this was restaurant's fault.

We recently moved to Columbia Heights and decided to check out some local restaurants. We ate at Commonwealth on a Saturday night around 10:30. The beer selection was very good and the food was exactly what we were looking for, something hearty and comforting after a long 2 days of moving. We will be back!
