Tired of eating inside a big noisy drum that restaurants pretend is "energetic."
We did not go to what appeared to be a fine dining restaurant in order to have to shout at each other through our meal. It doesn't really matter how good the food or service is if we cannot hear each other speak. Open Table misrepresents this condition as "energetic;" we consider it thoughtlessly noisy, and we cross all such restaurants, including this one, off our list; please stop misrepresenting this condition!!
The sound level could have been easily solved if 1) the interior designer had installed the correct ceiling panels with a high NRC rating; and 2) sound absorbing material were placed on the underside of the tables and a few other discreet locations in the dining room. Both are inexpensive solutions that have no visual impact. But increasingly, restaurant managers too lazy to solve this problem delude themselves into thinking this is something that "young people like" so it is okay. It is not okay.
The Food: My gazpacho was wonderful; the white asparagus salad was fine; the roast pork was without flavor and made me think of cafeteria food. The black beans and rice were Sysco grade; I'm used to real Puerto Rican and Cuban food and this was not. The bread pudding was wonderful - maybe the best I've ever had. My wife's caesar salad was no better than diner fair, and she abandoned it. She loved the veal.
The Service: Our gentleman server took a little while to warm up, but when we got him to, we really enjoyed each other. He took care of us well, although he was clearly rushed.
The Restaurant: They're obviously maximizing occupancy at the expense of their diners, but they managed to fill the place. Every five minutes a diner or server brushed up against our table because the aisles are so small.
The interior of the restaurant is spectacular architecturally; it is too bad the experience and the food is not on the same level.
Service was quite good but the food — paella, veal, crema catalana dessert—only fair. First half of the flamenco show was cheesy—done to recorded music! Much brtter after male performer arrived to sing and dance to the beat of hand claps and cajon. Where was the guitarist?
Always a great to go to the Colombia for their 1905 salad and White chocolate Bread Pudding.
We were visiting Tampa on business recently. We had a wonderful meal. We enjoyed the atmosphere, great service and delicious food. The history of Columbia Restaurant is also very interesting and adds to the experience. We will be back.
We arrived at 7:55 for an 8:00 reservation. They were slammed. We weren’t seated until 8:30, and sat for 10 minutes before a server approached our table. Once they had a better handle on the crowd, the service was good. Food was excellent, as were the mojitos. 😎
Had a party of eight. Made reservation for 6:30am. All member of the part were there but didn't get seated until 6:55. Food quality was not that great as several of my guests commented about the taste. The old cloths my daughter in law ordered could have been eaten with a spoon the dish was so runny. The decor was as expected, old world but overshadowed by touristy "Disney" atmosphere.
I have never been disappointed with the Columbia restaurant. I have been going for 30 years. The waiter was very professional, polite and attentive. We sat in the open terrace for lunch and had their great 1905 salad, soup and cuban sandwich. Although it was packed, we felt it was very quaint.
Every time I am in Tampa I make sure i get here and I double it up by stopping off for a bite to eat at the airport one on the way home....whatever you do always get the 1905 salad with whatever meal... cant wait to come back.
I have been going to the Columbia in Ybor for over 65 years and I have been to Goody-
Goody, Ulele, And the Columbias in Orlando, Sand Key, Armand Circle and I have enjoyed them all.
This restaurant was recommended to us from friends who had been there before and it did not disappoint! Our waiter was the best. His name was Steven and from wine to food, his suggestions were great! We had tapas, and a shrimp dish. The white chocolate bread pudding was truly one of the best desserts we have ever eaten! Definitely will book again if we come back to Tampa.
With friends from Nashville visiting they wanted to see the dancers. I looked online for show times and made a reservation for 30 min before. When we arrived we were told we couldn't see the dancers because we didn't make a reservation for dancers. I told her there wasn't a separate option for dancers, she said you have to call for dancer reservations. We were all really disappointed. The food & service was excellent...just missing the part of the evening that we went there for
Loved it as always. The bread is a treat in and of itself...and then the food! We have visited each location and have never been disappointed. Just make reservations!
Always a good experience!
The bar and interior is very nice. Drinks were ok.
Our server was very polite. He was managing quite bit and still very professional. The food is avarage. Fideua de Mariscos was smothered with very salty sofrito, maybe even a commercial one. Palomilla steak had quite a bit of gristle, and gave the impression of cooked in a pan as opposed to grilled as the description in the menu. Croquetos de Pollo and Empenadas de Picadillo were just avarage. Nothing crisp or flaky about them. Looks like Colombia has passed it’s prime and riding on the past and present hype.
Awesome service! Had my birthday dinner here. The food is great and they have a great Flamenco show you can attend.
Food was very good. Restaurant was very loud. Service was kind of slow so if you are catching a show at a certain time allow yourself 2 hours during busy periods such as weekends. Cuisine definitely worth going there.
We always enjoy our meals, however the service was terrible on Sunday, 3/11. took forever for anyone to acknowledge us, were offered no drinks. When the food finally came no-one checked back to see if everything was ok. Salad was old and we never did get drinks.
Our drinks (non-alcoholic), bread, salads and meal all came out together after a long wait. Service was sporadic.
We celebrated my birthday at Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City last Sunday. Everything was wonderful--the food, the service and the ambiance--and I appreciated the complimentary flan with a candle for dessert.
Awesome experience!! Go to the Flamenco show!!
We arrived on time for an 8pm reservation. The desk told us we`d have a wait. No Problem, Went to the bar, no room, no way to know when our table was ready. Left one of our party at alone at the desk for a while. Once seated the ambiance was OK and the service was good. I had a veal dish. It was rubbery, over breaded for the thinness of the meat and greasy. I will not be bothering to return and will not be recommending the veal to anyone. Perhaps the fish is better.
Reliably delicious food. Reservations on weekends a MUST. A bit noisy due to being very very busy. Checking out took a long time due to a power outage that affected credit card process.
Would love to see a tasting menu that offers a variety of smaller bites-- pinchos, if you will-- to sample.
Our first time. Exceeded all expectations! Amazing food, and our server Shawna was excellent, informative and friendly, very helpful! Wonderful atmosphere, of course, too. Can’t wait to go back.
A Tampa classic, worth a visit. Be sure to make reservations.
My husband and I were visiting from out of town. It was his first visit and I used to love coming here when I left. After being sat, it took 15 mins for a waiter to greet us and take our drink order. It then took another 25 mins to get our drinks and the bread for the table. The waiter did apologize that he was large tables which isn’t fair either to give him other small ones.
It was disappointing because the food is always good but that is too long to wait for any food or drink.
Our group of 9 (including a baby) were very well taken care of by the staff. Food was brought out early for the baby and young children. Drinks were prompt. Food modifications were made without question. All food arrived hot and was well prepared.
Always a pleasure dining at the Columbia in Ybor. The restaurant is beautiful, and the service is always excellent.
We have always enjoyed the experience at The Columbia Restaurants. We live in Sarasota so we go to St. Armand's.
This last visit at Ybor City on 3/10 after the Yankees game was substandard. We ordered white sangria and we were served red sangria.. We ordered Cubans and they came cold. Our server wasn't having her best day, maybe new..
These things were corrected. I thought you would want to know.. Thanks.. Joe
A must for anyone in the Tampa area.
This was my second time at Columbia, but my first at the Ybor City location. Once again, they exceeded my expectations. It was extremely busy for lunch that day, but the service was excellent and the food was delicious! oh, and the Sangria is second to none and the ambiance is unparalleled. Enjoy!
Wonderful as always. The food is always good and the service is as well. A must go to when you are in Tampa.
The food and ambiance was very good. The service was good but could have been better. Had to request napkins since there were none at the table when we were seated and none were forthcoming until we noticed we had none. Service somewhat slower than anticipated but overall satisfactory.
I understand the Columbia is an iconic restaurant but I can't understand why. The ambiance and service are reminiscent of a restaurant at Disney. The food is average.
Everything is so good my husband had the steak milanesa which was excellent and I had the 1905 salad and a Cuban always good we look forward to dining there once a month or more
This restaurant is a piece of work. It was crowded, loud, fun, absolutely huge. All our food was very good. It wasn't the best restaurant we went to in Tampa but it was very very good. Seafood was fresh and wonderful. Drinks were good. Service was exceptional. It was a little touristy but not in a bad way...you know they have a gift shop...It's a great restaurant if you're already in Ybor City looking for a somewhat high-end meal on a special occasion...just slight cheese-factor with the crowd and slight touristy feel...
We have attended the dinner and Flamenco show twice in the last two years, both while celebrating my birthday on vacation in Tampa.
Each time, I enjoyed the filet mignon and it is absolutely the best steak I have had any where at any time in my entire life. The sides and bread (and butter) are also fantastic.
The Flamenco dancers are talented and add a unique and energetic element, taking a dinner date and transforming it into a entire experience. It is romantic and magical.
I highly recommend the Columbia and cant wait to make my next reservation.
Waiter destroyed our evening, yet again, - sorry that it was too difficult for you to answer if we should order the group, or 2 individual side salads.
And if you roll your eyes and make a big deal about the question during our next visit - I will address your problem personally!
Even with her grandparents loaning the original owners money to open, we have no interest in the horrible service!
A little history: I went to the Columbia as a child some 40 years ago and had fragmented memories of enjoying it. On a recent trip to the area, I trekked over to Tampa to try it again. Fantastic isn't a strong enough descriptor. From the service and ambiance to the food, everything was spectacular.
Our evening dinner celebrating a birthday was made even more special with amazing service and food. Thank you
Love Columbia. I'm never disappointed. Every time I go, I'm in a different, gorgeous room. I love the bar area for happy hour as well. Tampa staple...1905 Salad. Used to go for the Flamenco shows on the weekends.
I will say the waiter was a little "too" attentive. Sometimes, you just want to sit back and relax. Maybe he was new.
Great for large parties, girlfriend dates and romantic dinners. Food awesome.
