This fine old restaurant is always worth the trip to Ybor City. Menu has remained the same for many years, however, the interior has been enlarged to accommodate the ever expanding crowds. One caution, Friday and Saturday nights can be overwhelming with traffic and people.
Overall, a great experience. The Flamenco show was professionally presented, the service above average, and the food totally enjoyed by everyone in our party.
I have eaten at the Columbia in tampa all of my life, this is the first time I have had poor service. She never once smiled except when she presented our bill. We ordered coffees after lunch and after 15 minutes of waiting finally just cancelled them as we had to leave. At the beginning we ordered three Cubans to go and at the end after cancelling coffee and having to ask twice we finally got the Cubans. Maybe she was having a bad day but it was the first time being together with my three sisters in 10 years and our waitress totally ruined the experience!
Columbia is truly a special eatery and a Florida gem. The food and service is superior. Our waiter Carlos made our visit perfect.
Been around since 1905. Food is excellent, service as well.
Please avoid the Columbia in ybor city. The staff is ignorant and the service was horrendous.
We arrived 45 minutes before our 7:30 reservation and the hostess assured us that we would be able to get a table in 30 minutes so we left her our cell phone number and went to the bar and had the most delicious sangrias...
We noticed 6 empty tables near the bar but thought that they would soon be filled and were probably reserved. Not so...
Thirty minutes later my cell phone summoned me back to the hostess station and we were escorted right back to the same empty table we had been staring at for the last 30 minutes...go figger...
Drinks and appetizers arrived quickly and were again delicious...however, we then waited nearly an hour before we were served our 1905 salad which was prepared at our table...WHAT?, oh well IT also was delicious...
Our server asked if we wanted to order desert but it was already after 10PM so we couldn't risk another hour wait no matter how good it MAY have tasted...:D
After 110 years, the original Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City continues to shine. We took out of town guests for dinner and the flamenco show and they loved it. The 1905 salad is the best on the market.
Met some friends for lunch. Convenient location. Great food and service. Wonderful ambiance. Will return soon and also recommend it to friends.
Wh e you drive up to this 100 year old restaurant you think, uh oh, tourist destination. This is classic Cuban and Spanish dining done to perfection. Grouper with lump crabmeat cooked to perfection. Fantastic table side prep on mojitos and salad. Delicious sangria. And wow, the Marilyn and Joe was enough to feed two people. Order entrees tapas style and plan to share as you are going to want to try many things. Warm crusty Cuban bread as a starter was super. Creamy flan to end was the perfect sweet touch. Service was excellent, and it was great to hear the history of this landmark.
my wife and i go to the Columbia for her birthday. The food and service is great!I wish the Columbia many more moons of being the gem of Tampa
The food was fabulous and the waiter was very courteous helpful and attentive, would definitely recommend Columbia restaurant to friends and family
Every time I walk into the Columbia I see at least 20 people crammed into the reception area. There is usually 3-4 silly hostesses standing around the computers, gigling and being uterly useless. Expect to wait to be seated, sometimes as long as 20 mins, seriously cutting into your evening if you have other plans after dinner. My favourite is if you come early, say 7.45pm, and your reservation is not until 8pm, they will not sit you down as "We havent started sitting down our 8 o'clocks yet". And at 8 they wont sit you down either, you will probably get to your table by 8.15 or so. And they think it is totally acceptible... Food and atmosphere there is good so lets them get away with it as people keep coming anyway, but there were many occassions where we didn't go to the Columbia because it is always a pain to be seated, so we chose to go somewhere else instead.
A staple of Tampa culture and cuisine, I've been going to the Columbia for over 20 years and have never been disappointed. The menu is incredibly diverse, plenty of options from which to choose and perhaps the most nerve wracking experience of my life is trying to select just one entree; although I could blindly pick an entree and it would be prepared excellently and I would not be disappointed. Service here is exceptional as well. The restaurant is incredibly large, and as such, food prep time will extend beyond your normal applebee's kitchen time, but it's well worth the wait. Quality food, prepared well served by friendly and courteous wait staff.
We frequently take out of town visitors just for the experience of visiting Florida's oldest restaurant. It is a charming restaurant, and in many ways feels like a throwback from another era. Our guests always enjoy the ambiance and delicious food.
We went to this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary and our son's anniversary. The restaurant made this very special and memorable. They gave each of us an anniversary card and a special dessert.
We were taken to Columbia Restaurant by another couple who had eaten there before. Three of us had excellent meals but the fourth wasn't good at all. The music was too loud for easy conversation during a meal but it wouldn't keep us from going back. We felt the waiter wasn't very attentive and was looking for a quick table turnover. Again, the three of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would again order the fish and not the chicken.
The restaurant is very nice but noisy. For the price, the food should have been exceptional. I found it to only be "good". I believe the restaurant's claim to fame is that it is 100 year old restaurant with a lot of history and charm. This cannot be denied. The waiter was nice and charming but not especially attentive. The fish was fresh and the steak was mediocre. (Don't order steak if it is not a steak house!) Again, for the price, the food should have been better. They are know for their special salad which was very good. I had heard a lot about this restaurant but I was very dissapointed. Too much to pay for just "OK" food.
We had the Shrimp Criollo and it was very good! Plantains cooked perfectly. We received a huge amount of bread prior to the meal and we should not have eaten so much of it so that we could save room for the key lime pie. Did not try the key lime pie. Will do next time.
Awesome food. We dined in the room with flamenco dancers. Cool experience. Such historic connotation of the restaurant and the cikture from 1905 thrives in the menu and the cery knowledgeable wait staff. If you go late night, there is a cool young bar scene in surrounding area. If you go earlier, there is a cool gift shop and museum.
Lively fun restaurant. We sat in the large middle room which was really noisy. We were not there for shoe which I regret. The sangria was delicious but seemed totally void of rum. Two people ordered fish and was not great. Paella tasty but not very hot. If we went back would go for the tapas instead
Columbia restaurant is famous for its 1905 Salad which is tossed at your table. It's all about the dressing of the salad. It is a huge portion of chopped lettuce, tomatoes, ham, cheese and olives and is very tasty. A large, hot crusty bread is served to each diner. We also ordered a tapas portion of fried calamari. We have dined at Columbia restaurant before and enjoy the salad so much that we don't look at the rest of the menu. The service was prompt and friendly in spite of the early evening Final Four Basketball crowd.
The atmosphere was wonderful - the building is quite beautful and the wait staff very freindly and accomodating. The food however was not very good. the Valencian Paella was very disappointing , the chicken in the dish was very dry and stale. The Flamenco dinner show was very entertaining. I did love the original 1905 salad.
A short trolley car ride from Downtown Tampa Bay Hotels, this long-standing dining establishment is "a must" while in the area! Generous and great Cuban inspired dishes served in attractively appointed rooms (there are five with different decor). Wait staff marvelous - attentive but not hovering/rushing...&, "dressed to the nines". Do make reservations.; moreover, a very popular dining location...and, rightfully so!!!
On of Tampa's oldest restaurants. You have to eat here at least once. It's gorgeous inside and out, the staff polite, attentive and knowledgeable. One of the best Sangrias ever and their signature 1905 Salad is a legend in its own right. From fresh baked Cuban bread to, Paella and even the kids Steak there is at a bad dish on the menu.
Hadn't been here in many years. Return was very disappointing. Restaurant was herding cattle rather than feeding diners. Weak, tasteless mojito. Zarzuela con mariscos, a special that night, came with an ubearably salty broth. Rice was lukewarm. Ambiance was that of a beachfront concession stand because restaurant allows patrons to wear anything - grungy t-shirts, greasy shorts, whatever. Columbia is as faded as Old Havana, with none of the charm.
We booked our reservation for 6:30 for dinner and floor show. When we showed up we were seated in the farthest corner of the room right outside the lady's room. Tables were arranged close together hardly any room in between. Not a good dining experience.
We have been enjoying the Columbia for many years. Great food & atmosphere! Looking forward to our next meal there
Tino Martinez, the mayor, Fred McGriff all sitting at different tables nearby. The menu was huge and offered something for everyone. I loved the selection of tapas. The meal was savory, well-prepared and promptly served. Server was knowledgeable and attentive. Try the 1905 salad, grouper a la rusa and the paella.
The noise level was rather jarring. I've been to the Columbia before but this was the first time the noise level caused by the guests had been off putting. Everything else about the dining experience was top notch.
Good food. Inattentive server and hostess, too bad. Interesting atmosphere. Still would go back to try again.
Just as delicious as the last time I was here. I don't live in the area anymore but every time I come back, I go to this restaurant and bring friends who have not had the experience of authentic Cuban food.
My Mom always said clean your plate, I did! I was stuffed but it was so good!
My husband had the Cuban sandwich and said it was better than he could imagine.
Can't wait to come back again.
I'm a native Floridian so when I goto "The oldest restraunt in the state", I expect something spectacular. Staff was exemplary. Hot bread brought to the table was a nice touch. Local beer was pretty good to be honest. Layout of the dining area was cramped but l liked the linen table clothes. Dinner however is why we were there and it was uneventful. To be honest my wife could have done a better job on the pork (since it was simply a pork tenderloin that was sliced into 3 pcs of 1/4 inch). I'd be willing to go back some other trip but you only get one chance to make a first impression. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.
I travel 250 days a year and the Columbia never disappoints I take customers there and it's always a hit
Went for lunch. Guests wanted to enjoy Columbia food. St Petersburg Pier closed, so visited the original Columbia.
Enjoyed it, food was wonderful.
Great food and drinks as always. but the reservation was for 8:30 pm and we were not seated until 9:30, the explanation was they had a lot of walk-ins.
waited too long for table. but bar service was great and loved the entertainment. seems hostess forgot us. reminded her twice
As always, the Columbia should be the first place to go when visiting Tampa . We love the food , history, and entertainment !
Visiting Tampa and wanted piaia this is a historic restaurant that should be on the top of your list. Food was excellent service was better.
