Columbia Restaurant - Ybor City Ratings and Reviews
It is unfortunately an institution of “mass feeding”. Large portions heaped up on plates not pleasing at all for the eye. Despite many empty tables there was a long waiting time, since the front desk/ reception was understaffed. Staff was overal friendly and pleasant.
If you are ever in Tampa this is the place that you have to go to. Food was superb, ambiance was unique and wait staff was friendly. Carlos was our waiter, he has been there for 13 years and made some wonderful recommendations. I would come back to Tampa just to come back to Columbia Restaurant!
I have been coming here forever and always bring out of town guests and business colleagues here. The food is consistently good and the service is normally very good and relaxed. This last visit was a little disappointing and embarrassing. I don’t know if I have always had the older traditional waiters in the past but this time we had a younger waitress and waiter who assisted her. For the first time that I recall we were asked if we wanted sparkling or flat/still water. We said still and a bottle of Saratoga water was brought out which I figured we had to pay for. I asked the waitress if that was the case and she said yes. I asked if there was something wrong with the tap water and she said that she wouldn’t drink it since the building was so old but said she was from Ohio where I guess the water must be better. My business colleagues and I ordered the white sangria and the waitress said we should get the cava (?) which apparently adds champagne to it. I was a little taken aback. We stuck with the white sangria. Without me saying anything my business colleagues said wow, that was an upsale attempt. The waitress must have seen that I was bothered as 2 of 3 of us ordered the 1905 salad entree and the 3rd got one as a side which had more than my entree salad. Following our meal the waitress asked if we wanted dessert to which we said no and then the waiter later asked and even came back several minutes later and asked if we were sure we didn’t want any dessert. I’m hoping the upselling was just an attempt by a younger waiter and waitress looking for a larger tip and not a management policy. I have never felt that with the older traditional waiters. Sparkling or still water is an only option overseas but I have never found that here. With the entree prices, and if the water is that bad, they shoukd provide still water at no cost. This won’t prevent me from going again as it’s a great place with good food and the Gonzmart family does so much for the community.
C'mon...it the Columbia. How can you go wrong? The people with this establishment are always top notch. The Hostess was happy to see us, smiling the whole time, gracious and prompt to seat us once our full party arrived. Our server was quick to introduce himself to us, bring us our drinks and explain the specials of the day. He gave us ample time to speak with each other since it took him three visits to our table for us to order our lunch. Our dishes were served in the time as expected. Everyone enjoyed our entree. Drinks were filled continuously. The meal was really good but the service is over-the-top exceptional. We look forward to our next visit.
We came to celebrate a birthday with good food and to watch the Flamenco show, which we had never experienced before. When booking, we weren't told that the 5:30 seating didn't have a Flamenco show until 7:00 pm, which would have been nice to know in advance. Once seated, we were fortunate to have an excellent waiter, Billy F (I believe) who was friendly, but not overly so. The Cuban bread is a delight, and the 1905 salad is excellent, tossed at table side. But our entrees were a little disappointing. My $39 Bambino NY Strip steak (supposedly dry aged 12 days) had too much gristle, and it had a bitter taste to it. It WAS cooked to the proper temperature, however. The crab-stuffed shrimp was tasty, but they left most of the shell on the shrimp (4 of 5), which is sorta like finding a bone in your fish. The stuffed mushrooms were meh, not bad, not great. As for desserts, the key lime pie was too sweet, but the bread pudding made with the aforementioned Cuban bread is heaven-sent! As I mentioned earlier, our server was excellent, there when needed but never intrusive. And although I am not much of a dance fan (that's my wife's area of appreciation), I have to say that I really enjoyed the Flamenco show, especially the vocalist/dancer at the end of the show. So we will come back, maybe that time we will try some of the Tapas menu items.
Took friends here for them to get a taste of historical Tampa / Ybor. Did make reservations.
They sat us in an area that had a horrible draft from the outside (cooler night). The service was average, we felt like we were an inconvenience for the server asking for gluten free options, not very attentive at all. Food was good, nothing exceptional. Would recommend it but with reservations.
Excellent food, service and Sangria. We met an old friend for lunch and had a delightful meal. Our servers were attentive and the food was delicious. I loved the historical information included on the menu and we made a trip to the gift shop afterward. I have already recommended The Columbia to several friends. We will come again.
I've been coming to Columbia for 50 years, since I was 10 years old. I love this restaurant, an anchor in Ybor City. The food is still very good, but it's not the treat it used to be. Dishes seem a little more 'prepared ahead' than they used to. I still recommend it to anyone visiting Tampa - so much history, such great ambience, and very good food.
The restaurant came highly recommended. It is enormous and a neighborhood landmark. The service was not that great. They forgot our beer. My entree came out cold and when they heated it, they forgot half of it in the kitchen. The waiter didn't check back in a timely manner.
The food was okay but nothing special. Overall, I think they thought our table wasn't spending enough so they didn't bother with us.
The food was excellent and the restaurant is beautiful. The staff was attentive and very professional. It was very refreshing to actually dine in a restaurant without a big screen TV blaring endless sporting events. The music playing was soft and you did not have to shout to talk. We dine out often and if we had such a lovely restaurant in Ohio we would be there even more. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we will go there every time we return to Florida.
Eat here whenever we can! Fantastic Cuban style food in a delightful atmosphere. One of the first people in the restaurant for lunch and they were not very busy, but somehow we got really horrible service. Everything took forever - but the waiter did not seem new or overwhelmed - he just didn’t care.
Columbia was absolutely wonderful. The ambiance of the restaurant was a throwback to the 20's-30's but very well preserved. The menu was extensive but interesting cover-to-cover. The sangria and mojitos were made table side. The bread was fresh baked and in the form of small individual loaves. The soups were superb as were the salads. Everyone raved about their meal. Loved it! Great way to finish off four days of Tampa.
Great service and ambiance! Our server gave us a full tour, showing us the various rooms and telling us the building's history. I would recommend reservations in the room where you can watch the show. Food was very delicious and served very quickly. We had the Arroz Caldoso con Mariscos, Shrimp Supreme, and Guava Turnover for desert.
My wife and I had a great time at the original Columbia restaurant in Ybor. Great food and Sangria. The atmosphere was so cool and as we were snooping around all the different rooms checking out the history one of the managers offered us a tour. Wonderful place
I've dined at the Columbia a few times over the years. It can be either really great or disappointingly mediocre. This last visit was the latter. Perhaps because of the New Year dining volume, the food was a mixed bag. The appetizers (pinchos and calamari) were good, but the entrees were nearly tasteless. Our server was nearly devoid of personality and looked like he found us tedious to wait on. Columbia can be spectacular, but this visit was lousy.
We enjoy the Columbia in Ybor for many reasons. I used to go there for dinner in the 60s with dear friends. My daughters were in town from Seattle and they love the Spanish/Cuban food. We enjoyed our dinner after the Outback Bowl game and had reservations on our phone app. The hot Cuban bread is always a winner. Everyone was pleased and impressed with their dinner choices.
Columbia restaurant has been one of our favorites for almost 10 years now. Food quality is always on par and portions are generous especially the Paella. We managed to get a reservation here for New Years eve and it was super slammed but were seated exactly on time and service was very well catered. The Palomia Steak is amazing so highly recommended ~ seasoning is done very well on it. Very well priced considering its fine dining. Try to get a reservation in the main atrium if possible cause the setup and vibe is laid back and classical looking. They have a side room with a wine cellar thats perfect for photos opps with all the decor they have going on in there.
