Columbia Restaurant - Sarasota Ratings and Reviews
Terrific! We celebrated my wife's art exhibition opening here with two of the young people who worked on her installation with her. The dinners were gourmet quality, the service was expert and charming, the ambience was delightful. Sarasota is lucky to have such a fine establishment in its midst.
We love the ambiance of Ybor City location, but the location here in Sarasotas’ St Armands Circle easily compensates. From the time you walk in, the smiles from the hostesses guarantee an enjoyable dining experience. We love consistency; in service, timed delivery, wait staff always there, but not hovering, great drinks, appetizers, great choices in entrees, to deserts. COLUMBIA has it all. In the 5 winter months we spend here, we visit at least 5-7 enjoyable times.
I am told this is the oldest restaurant in Sarasota and it shows it's still delicious. While it lacks the gels and deconstruction of modernist cuisine, I'd pick The Columbia anytime for special events and everyday meals. The choices are vast, the flavors are bold and direct. Excellent service! Rarely do you get table - side preparation. The decor, despite the age, looks fresh and bright. We really enjoyed the Tapas menu and the sangria.
Everyone except the 5 of us seem to love this restaurant. We thought that the food was average and drinks WAY expensive, even for Sarasota. Bill for 5 people was $300 and none of us were wowed. It's a good restaurant, but not a great one in our opinion, and the prices are for "great."
We always eat at the Columbia Restaurant when we come to Sarasota on vacation, which is usually twice a year. The evening we ate there on this occasion was overall a bit of a disappointment. My wife had Chicken and Shrimp Barcelona, which came with just a few medium size shrimp and one cube of chicken, which we all agreed was horrible--did not even taste like chicken. It was my son's birthday, which I put on the Open Table reservation, but the waiter/restaurant did nothing to acknowledge it. We ordered the 3/4 pound Stone Crab as an appetizer and wanted four pieces of roughly the same size, but the waiter said it might come with 3 pieces. The $40 crab appetizer did come with four pieces--one very large, two medium, and one small one. It was rather uncomfortable splitting them up between the four of us. The waiter, Zsohlst, was a bit of a wise guy. We asked what seafood he recommended and he said he does not eat seafood, but said the steaks were his favorite. He made no effort to say what seafood other diners seem to prefer. We got a kiddie meal for our 3 year old. He only drinks water, so my wife said if it comes with a drink, bring a diet coke. Zsholst asked if she wanted it in a kiddie cup in a tone that my wife interpreted as sarcastic and not the least bit humorous. My two son's liked the filet very much; I had the Completa Cubana which was a combo of beef, pork, chicken, very dry and I would not order again. We will go back, but it will be for the salad and the black beans, which are both very good. Our bill for four was $295, including tip, and it was definitely not worth it.
We had a great experience and meal at this restaurant! We had the chicken croquettes which were absolutely delicious, the scallops and the ribs for our three tapas options. The scallops and ribs were a bit dry but very tasty. We loved the festive Christmas decorations and the "bustle" of the restaurant. We would go back again on our next visit!
We love this restaurant and frequent often. However, lately the hostess has not been friendly, hospitable, or even interactive. It sets a surly tone for the experience. We've also noticed that when it's busy, the wait staff seem not to be happy. We have always enjoyed Columbia, but it's not even full season yet, so we may wait until May to return.
The Columbia Restaurant(s) have always been a special place for my Husband and I to visit and dine on any occasion at their many locations. Several times through out the years we have ordered large bounties of food to share with are friends and family at our home. Yes we drive over 35 miles to get the best in Sarasota!!
My husband and I went for date night, we've been to the Columbia several times before and have had excellent service and food. Our server was good, not overly attentive and was polite but not much personality. We ordered a large 1905 salad which was outstanding as always and 3 tapas to share. The calamari and bacon wrapped shrimp were lightly breaded and fried but were soggy and flavorless when they came out...a huge disappointment. We also had the stuffed mushrooms which were good but I would probably not order them again.
Myself and my family have been going to the Columbia Restaurant for over 20 years. We always seem to have a good meal every time we're there. We've been looking forward to coming to the Columbia restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving dinner wasn't up to Columbia standards. The turkey was dry, not horrible tasting, but dry. They also shoved everything onto one plate, the turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans and carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy and sweet potato casserole. because of that we only got 4 small green beans, 3 little carats and one spoonful of sweet potato casserole. Sweet potato casseroles is one of the things we love to eat on Thanksgiving and we hardly got a spoonful on each plate. I will say that we did have choices when it came to choosing from three different soups or salad and four different desserts. Unfortunately, omthe desserts were not as I remember eating desserts at Columbia before. My flan was very Bland and falling apart, the key lime pie was also very mushy and no taste. I've always had good flan at the Columbia so again very surprised about the flan. We had many restaurants to choose from to have Thanksgiving dinner at and we chose the Columbia Restaurant. The service was fine and the Ambiance is always good there, but unfortunately the Thanksgiving meal wasn't anything to write home about. I don't think we will do another Thanksgiving dinner at the Columbia Restaurant, but We will come back for their regular menu because we enjoy that a lot.
