Columbia's Original "1905" Salad
The Columbia's legendary salad tossed at your table. Crisp Iceberg lettuce with julienne of baked ham, natural Swiss cheese, tomato, olives, grated Romano cheese and our famous garlic dressing. The award-winning salad won honors from USA Today as "One of 10 Great Places to Make a Meal Out of a Salad." The signature salad, named for the year the restaurant was founded in Tampa's Latin district of Ybor City, was inspired by immigrants to the Cigar City: Romano cheese from the Sicilians and the famous garlic dressing used by Cubans to marinate fresh roast pork, plus Florida tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, julienne of baked ham and Swiss cheese. In the 40s, Tony Noriega, who ventured to New York City during the Depression to find work, added a "secret ingredient," Worcestershire sauce, to the recipe.
Cuban Black Bean Soup
Frijoles Negros prepared exactly as our grandmother, Carmen Hernandez, did. Served over a bed of white rice and topped with diced raw Spanish onions. 100% vegetarian.
It was for my girlfriend's birthday. They gave her a card signed by the front end staff and we thought that would be all. The table wasn't the best but next time I know when I make the reservation to request the main dining room. The recommended red wine was perfect as was the ribeye steak I ordered. My gf worked there in her 20's so looking at the menu saw her favorite dish was no longer being served so requested it of the kitchen, and just like that, she got it. We thank the chef and our server Yesika. As we sat finishing our wine, the wait staff came out and sang happy birthday in Spanish. I couldn't ask for more. Thank you!
Enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the great service!
Everything was amazing and our server Lisa was great!
The food was delicious as always. Server was very personable.
Went to Colombia Restaurant in Sarasota for a wonderful birthday dinner with friends. Food was terrific - portion sizes a quite large, even the tapas. Excellent variety, impeccable service and terrific atmosphere - reservations are really a must: they book quickly and fill up early in the day.
Great Old Time restaurant in Sarasota, a branch of the even older Tampa Colombia. Substantial portions of high quality dining and friendly efficient service in a pleasant indoor/outdoor environment. Pretty hard to miss the Mark here.
They seem to overbook so even though we had a reservation, we had to wait 20 minutes. Then we were told the bar was backed up so it might take awhile for our drinks.
Probably in the top five at St. Armands
Cuban sandwich/1905 salad combo for lunch is very good but
they drown the salad with dressing if you don't speak up.
We had a great dinner with the family. Our server was awesome and super accommodating to the kids!
Love the salad
I have been to many of the restaurants on St Arman’s over the last couple of weeks. The service at Columbia was really poor. The waiter I had did not appear to be knowledgeable about the drink and menu selections and he simply was not attentive. I asked if a certain dish could be made without olives and he indicated it was pre-made and only available as described in the menu. The food was average at best.
Whenever we’re in Sarasota we stop by salad mixed at your table is a nice touch. something for everyone on the menu unless you’re a really picky eater.
We went there for our honeymoon dinner simply because in the past, it’s been my absolute favorite restaurant.
The server was definitely new. She made my table side sangria in literally 2 seconds. Dumped the wine in the pitcher and said here enjoy. Then when we ordered she didn’t ask if I’d like to add the salad and walked away before we even finished ordering! We had to get another server to go to kitchen to grab her. She also didn’t make the 1905 salad correctly, totally forgot to put the Worcestershire sauce in it. My husbands dinner was delicious, but my paella was mushy.
Sadly, this location is no where near as good as the St. Augustine one.
Horrible service, average food for very expensive price!
We have frequented the Colombian several times before over the years the quality the service and food are always superb. We especially love their Tableside special salad and their Cava sangria. Their Tapas appetizers are a real treat that everyone should try specially going to the Colombian. We experienced a young Lady’s fist nite as a waitress... we placed our order, when she returned with our tableside Sangria tray of various fruits specialty mixes that go into sangria. She described each one as she put them into a picture , we were each poured a glass
Belated Mother’s Day dinner with my daughter was a beautiful evening and Chris did a great job! Service was a little slow but the ambiance and my great company made it the best!
I chose this restaurant for me and my friends to get together to have dinner. I know this is a famous restaurant and quite large. And there were hundreds of people eating here when we arrived. They honored the reservation no problem. But that was the only good thing. The service was absolutely horrible. He kept apologizing but the truth of the matter is it took 40 minutes for us to get our drinks. And then when we received our drinks none of us light our drinks. One of which was mojito which they are quote unquote famous for. And no one liked it. I had a specialty margarita which I thought was horrible. The waiter was trying to perform for us all the time which to me was annoying not amusing. People thought the main courses were okay but no one was raving. I know this place has been around for 105 years. Maybe it is coasting on reputation at this point but for me it did absolutely nothing and I would not recommend it at all!
Great food, great place, horrible server. Not friendly despite our efforts to "warm him up"...overall, he couldn't be bothered with us. Very disappointing.
A Waste of restaurant space... The food was not very good and the service was even
worse. This is a tourist trap.. The appetizer was actually fairly good... I would suggest
that anyone going there have a few drinks and several appetizers and go somewhere
else for dinner.
Always good food. Service can be a little aggressive. Hosts could be a little nicer.
We visited Columbia in February 2020, a month before the outbreak of Covid 19. We loved the food then and vowed to return. With Covid that return was delayed to this week over a year later. The food is still great. We ate lunch. Canneilone de Langosto was our entree. Still tastes wonderful! We shared a salad, while I devoured my share of Cuban bread and butter. We shall return. Good service during a busy Monday lunch crowd. Water could have been refilled a little quicker. We sat not far from the entrance. Tables distanced well.
Waiter was very short with us in all aspects.
Lighting was flickering and no one would adjust during our entire time there.
Pretty authentic; a tradition for us on the circle
Great margaritas, amazing food, exceptional service!
Have been dining there for years. One of our favorite restaurants in the world. Never disappoints!
The 1905 salad and Cuban bread were outstanding! Perfect atmosphere and wait staff!
Food at Columbia is hit or miss. Seafood & pork dishes are very tasty as are tapas menu items. Beef/steak are heavily seasoned to cover tough cuts of meat - steer clear of them. Famous salad is a favorite of mine, generally a real winner - except our server heavily doused it with Whostershire sauce making it almost inedible. Service was SUBPAR. We were virtually neglected. Had to ask for everything including silverware, never got that second glass of water. Seating outside along the side that they share with another restaurant is not pleasant. People smoking, too crowded. We’ve sat outside on the opposite side closer to the entrance & it’s much nicer. Indoors is also nice. Overall it’s a good restaurant but you need to know how to navigate seating, the menu, & demand better service. In fairness they seemed to be short staffed- as everyone is right now. Hopefully that changes.
The food was delicious, but a little too crowed and noisy for me. I like more serene and quiet places!
Out waiter was very friendly and attentive and went the extra mile to make our Mother’s Day Dinner enjoyable.
Food is always high quality at Columbia -- you get what you pay for. Server was friendly and attentive.
The food and service was excellent as always.
I booked this for Mother’s Day for mom + her friends and she loved it! Appetizers and crab cakes were excellent.
The food was good as always, the waiter was there is all I can say. He did not know how to make the mojitos so they tasted awful like flat water and rum (no lime or mint taste whatsoever or bubbles) had to send it back and pay more for a single servings from the bar instead of a pitcher. Usually the waiters make a point of telling you what goes into the salad he just threw it together. He was polite but not friendly, I understand it was busy and mother's day but not what I was excited for.
Great food and great service! Columbia Restaurant never disappoints.
Salad 1905, must try it
Fantastic food and service. Excellent quality, fair pricing
We have always love the Columbia. Definitely some of the best Spanish food around. Unfortunately the service which is usually pretty good was not good at all. Long wait for order to be taken. Service slow and not so good.
Place was great. Service was exceptional but the food was not very good. Nothing to rave about. Probably will not go back.
