Columbia Restaurant - Sarasota Ratings and Reviews
I am still trying to figure out what the big deal is. We went for my daughter's 25 birthday last night and I must say it isn't worth all the hype. While the 1905 salad was decent, I'm not sure why its so "famous". I assume it depends on who is making it because they do prep it at the table. Our waitress, who had no personality, never smiled once and seemed to want to rush our party of 6 out the door as soon as we sat down, didn't have any interest at all in our experience what so ever. I understand she was busy, but that is no excuse. Its her job. We paid good money to bring our family, only for a sub par experience, mediocre food with a waitress that seemed more put out than be at work. The stuffed shrimp were dry and rubbery. Not sure where supposed lemon butter sauce was. The lobster dish my husband ordered had enough lobster for a small child. Totally NOT worth the $$. I feel we wasted my daughters special birthday dinner on what we though would be great and turned out to be a true disappointment. We have lived in Sarasota our entire lives and I can honestly say we will probably never go back. The red sangria WAS delicious though. Highly recommend if you're going to waste the rest of your money on dinner. I'm so sad we wasted her birthday dinner.
Wonderful place to dine. My husband and I have been enjoying the great food, service, and atmosphere for many years. We have been known to drive from Atlanta just so we could dine at Columbia's. We love the stone crab when they are in season and we always enjoy the 1905 salad and black bean soup. The service is always impeccable.
It was extremely loud very hard to talk. humid outside but the management had the front windows open so you got the car fumes with you dinner. Not good. I have gone to the Columbia in Tampa and now in Sarasota and unless my friends ask to go again I will not be returning.
Food is always consistent and good. Love eating here. We had the grumpiest waitress on the planet. Impatient, rude, and reached over everyone to serve when sheclearly had room to use appropriate protocol. She will never last through the busy season snd i hope we never see her again.
As a vegetarian,I️ was looking forward to the black bean cakes which I️ thought would be my only option (from previous visits) but was pleasantly surprised by the eggplant encrusted by plantain crumbs and served in a red sauce with wine - so delicious !! Family members enjoyed pork and chicken- the waitress was very willing to please by substituting sides and communicating wine recommendation from the bartender. We saw beautiful sangria (white and red) being prepared creatively at the table. Although I️ was annoyed by the noise factor and delay in drink service, the waitress eventually gave good service.
Several times when we’ve dined at Columbia, the waitstaff seems to be ‘put out’ when a few members of our party have ordered soup and salad, even though other members of our group have ordered full dinner entrees and we have had pitchers of sangria and beer. As soon as we order soup and salad, our service goes downhill. Our waiter seems to ignore us and act ‘put out’. Last time he didn’t even give us a choice as to what size salad we wanted- he assumed we wanted the large size even though we also were having soup. This is the third time this has happened and although we always love to visit, next time we’ll think twice.
Went for a birthday, and everything was spectacular! The sangria was great you get about 5 glasses from a pitcher. The Cuban bread is delicious. The famed 1905 salad is made table-side and is so good. I️ ordered the Salmon Sant’ Yago and highly recommend it. Perfectly cooked and very flavorful and comes with the yellow rice with peas. Other dishes ordered included a Roasted Pork “A La Cubana” and the Cuban Sandwhich with black bean soup! Everything was so delicious!
I absolutely love the Columbia for their food. I have gone many times to there St. Augustine location and now a few times to their Lido Beach/Sarasota location. The food never disappoints. The lido beach location is very crammed and tightly put together with tables. Not the coziest of spot and/ intimate. I took my boyfriend this past time for his birthday and was a little disappointed that in the reservation I had made the restaurant aware of the occasion that they didn't offer or do anything for the occasion. All in all I do love this restaurant, mainly for the food, and would definitely recommend going if you haven't been.
I really like Columbia, the food is always tasty and service is great. This time our entrees were good but not great as they usually are. I can't put my finger on it but they lacked the" I can't stop eating this" factor. Overall, still a very good restaurant and I will definitely go back!
I have dined at Columbia many times over the past 20 years. Due to my two most recent experiences I won’t return. Good salad but disgusting pitcher of mojitos and salty entrees. This is a tourist trap and there are far better dining options like Shore Diner and Crab and Fin.
First off, I would like to say that the Columbia restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants in Sarasota. With that said, my experience last night was not good. To start things off they sat me 45 minutes after my reservation and we requested to sit outside or on the rail ahead of time in the comment section when I made my reservation. That didn’t happen and to boot the service was lousy at best. The food was good as usual but was ruined by the late reservation and the poor service. If the restaurant allows for requests and does not answer the request if there is a problem then they should not allow it at all. I also did check the box in the reservation that they could contact me if they needed to. None of that happened.
Dined on Halloween night, so very lively evening. As always, the "1905 salad" was excellent. Mussels and soups are a delicious start, accompanied by warm Cuban bread. The rice dishes, including the Paella and chicken, are superb. Our server was excellent, especially considering the hectic atmosphere of this particular night. Our party of six had a great meal.
We went for Halloween night as all the kids were walking around St. Armands Circle.
They accommodated us with the last table available on the porch. We were "ringside" Fun evening and the bread is absolutely fabulous. It was such a busy night for them. All was handled professionally!
My wife and I went to Columbia to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was beautiful weather so we chose the streetside seating. Our waiter was very friendly and professional. We had the mussels and chorizo appitizer. They were the best I've ever had. The 1905 salad was superb. I had the steak and mixed vegetables. Everything was prepared to perfection. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her food as well. The overall experience was a fantastic way to celebrate 38 years of marriage.
