I am told this is the oldest restaurant in Sarasota and it shows it's still delicious. While it lacks the gels and deconstruction of modernist cuisine, I'd pick The Columbia anytime for special events and everyday meals. The choices are vast, the flavors are bold and direct. Excellent service! Rarely do you get table - side preparation. The decor, despite the age, looks fresh and bright. We really enjoyed the Tapas menu and the sangria.

Always great food with a great atmosphere! The Half and Half is a great meal partnering a half of a Cuban sandwich and a large portion of their table-made 1905 salad. Awesome!

This was a wonderful location to meet with a friend. Service was great, Liz, our server was watchful to refill drinks. It was not overly crowed at the time, diners all seemed happy and taken care of very nicely. Enjoyable.

We had a great experience and meal at this restaurant! We had the chicken croquettes which were absolutely delicious, the scallops and the ribs for our three tapas options. The scallops and ribs were a bit dry but very tasty. We loved the festive Christmas decorations and the "bustle" of the restaurant. We would go back again on our next visit!

We love this restaurant and frequent often. However, lately the hostess has not been friendly, hospitable, or even interactive. It sets a surly tone for the experience. We've also noticed that when it's busy, the wait staff seem not to be happy. We have always enjoyed Columbia, but it's not even full season yet, so we may wait until May to return.

My husband and I went for date night, we've been to the Columbia several times before and have had excellent service and food. Our server was good, not overly attentive and was polite but not much personality. We ordered a large 1905 salad which was outstanding as always and 3 tapas to share. The calamari and bacon wrapped shrimp were lightly breaded and fried but were soggy and flavorless when they came out...a huge disappointment. We also had the stuffed mushrooms which were good but I would probably not order them again.

It’s an ok restaurant. Too big and noisy. The food is everage and overrated. The restaurant needs a face lift. The decor is old and tired.
A lot of more exciding restaurants in Sarasota.

Myself and my family have been going to the Columbia Restaurant for over 20 years. We always seem to have a good meal every time we're there. We've been looking forward to coming to the Columbia restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving dinner wasn't up to Columbia standards. The turkey was dry, not horrible tasting, but dry. They also shoved everything onto one plate, the turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans and carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy and sweet potato casserole. because of that we only got 4 small green beans, 3 little carats and one spoonful of sweet potato casserole. Sweet potato casseroles is one of the things we love to eat on Thanksgiving and we hardly got a spoonful on each plate. I will say that we did have choices when it came to choosing from three different soups or salad and four different desserts. Unfortunately, omthe desserts were not as I remember eating desserts at Columbia before. My flan was very Bland and falling apart, the key lime pie was also very mushy and no taste. I've always had good flan at the Columbia so again very surprised about the flan. We had many restaurants to choose from to have Thanksgiving dinner at and we chose the Columbia Restaurant. The service was fine and the Ambiance is always good there, but unfortunately the Thanksgiving meal wasn't anything to write home about. I don't think we will do another Thanksgiving dinner at the Columbia Restaurant, but We will come back for their regular menu because we enjoy that a lot.

This is a very busy restaurant but they don't seem to cater well enough for the amount of people that frequent this establishment. The service was poor and the food we chose was awful. Three of us had the paella but it was all tough chicken and pork with very little seafood. My wife also had a chicken dish and this was not much better. It was the most expensive meal we had on holiday and certainly the worst. Very disappointing. We should have known better when the waitress tried to put us off having the paella. People at a nearby table overheard us complaining and also had the same view.

I am still trying to figure out what the big deal is. We went for my daughter's 25 birthday last night and I must say it isn't worth all the hype. While the 1905 salad was decent, I'm not sure why its so "famous". I assume it depends on who is making it because they do prep it at the table. Our waitress, who had no personality, never smiled once and seemed to want to rush our party of 6 out the door as soon as we sat down, didn't have any interest at all in our experience what so ever. I understand she was busy, but that is no excuse. Its her job. We paid good money to bring our family, only for a sub par experience, mediocre food with a waitress that seemed more put out than be at work. The stuffed shrimp were dry and rubbery. Not sure where supposed lemon butter sauce was. The lobster dish my husband ordered had enough lobster for a small child. Totally NOT worth the $$. I feel we wasted my daughters special birthday dinner on what we though would be great and turned out to be a true disappointment. We have lived in Sarasota our entire lives and I can honestly say we will probably never go back. The red sangria WAS delicious though. Highly recommend if you're going to waste the rest of your money on dinner. I'm so sad we wasted her birthday dinner.
