As of July 1st 2016 Thomas Zippelli assumed the role of Owner and Executive Chef. Thomas Zippelli graduated with a bachelor degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson and Wales University. For three years Thomas worked under Chef Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park in New York City and for 2.5 years under Chef Thomas Keller at the French Laundry. Great Food!!! The grouper was perfection and the lamb shanks were a delight. This and an amazing atmosphere created a very romantic setting for our anniversary. The chef made us feel very welcome when he came over to our table and talked with us, he was very charming and inviting! The service was perfect and the manager Tim came over to make sure everything was alright and offered the perfect wine suggestions for our meals. We can't find anything but praise about the restaurant. Our waiter was just the right amount of attentive and everything, down to the most delicious bread pudding, was served perfectly. I was told that the menu changes regularly, which is very great for me because I intend on going back a lot and this won't create a boring experience by having the same thing. Also, the menu selections creates a very rare find in Columbia - a fine dining restaurant! I can tell this is truly a farm to table restaurant because of the attention given to the selection of the choices on the menu and our dinners were outstanding. It is going to quickly become one of Columbia's true gems! Great Chef, great service, great wine and the best atmosphere in Columbia!!!!!
We had a lovely lunch dining outside with long-time friends. It certainly helped that the weather was stunning, but the food and service were what really made the afternoon a success. I've been to dinner several times, but wanted to see what it was like for lunch. Great! I commend the new owner-chef for his hard work. My friends were envious that we have such an excellent restaurant within walking distance of our home.
We had a fabulous meal at Coho Grill a couple of weeks ago. I had ventured there with a friend a few months ago to see how the reopened restaurant was faring. I was singularly unimpressed with the food. Then I heard that Coho had a new chef and decided to give it another try. I am glad that I did. There were four of us for dinner that night and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals-everything we were served was delicious and sitting out on the patio next to the fireplace was a treat. A shout out too for the excellent service. I would go back.
First time back since Club reno; what a beautiful building! We ate Sunday brunch
outside on the lovely covered patio overlooking the golf course. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Drinks were beautifully presented and tasted superb---we hated to leave! Wait staff was also very attentive. The restaurant didn't have many customers---not sure people know it has re-opened. I see it as a destination spot for all ages---one of the most pleasurable dining experiences we've had in a long time!!!!
My husband come here every other month or so, as we like the food and the nice atmosphere. This was our first time eating outside. I was glad to, because usually it is FREEEZING inside. Our server was not very attentive at all, but he wasn't horrible. I overheard him apologize to the table next to us for forgetting their drinks. I'm not sure what's going on with the restaurant, but the menu changed drastically. They only have a couple of items for Appetizers, Salads, Entrees. Not much of a selection at all. We were very pleased with the taste of our meals, but the portions were much much smaller than usual. We've decided to give them a break until maybe the New Year while they work out their kinks.
Enjoyed the bass fish dish as well as the loin pork. It was my husband's birthday and I heard there was a new Chef and Owner who graduated from River Hill. I thought to give the Chef a chance and he did not disappoint. However the server could not explain the dish I had, she said it was a heavy soup. In reality it was a whole fish in a sauce. Thanks Google😀.
I have always loved Coho Grill; however, I'm disappointed in the new menu. Unless you really like pickled items, there's not much to choose from. It's quite limited and lacking in some of the favorites (bring back the cheese curds!). I'm really hoping the menu expands because this I love having this gem in my neighborhood.
It was very hectic and noisy while we were there. The entire dining room was being used for a wedding reception and the bar area was too noisy to have a conversation. There weren't enough menus to go around and we had to share. Food was fine but nothing special. I know they just changed owners so I'll probably go again. Was there recently for lunch and sat outside. That was very pleasant but not an option Saturday night with the heavy rains.
We went during Howard County Restaurant week for dinner. They offered 3 courses for $35. The food was tasty, but VERY small portions. I had enough but my husband was still hungry after dinner. We will give them another chance and, hopefully we will be more impressed.
We went to Coho Grill for Restaurant Week, so there was a limited menu (which we knew about beforehand). The food was very good, but not excellent. My salmon was a little too 'crusty,' but tasted good. The cucumber/radish side was nothing special. The chicken and corn porridge was very good. The grilled-peach salad and the two desserts we had - peach cobbler and chocolate mousse - were very good. Our service was a little strange. Three different people waited on us at various times, and that caused some duplication of effort. The service was also a little slow at times, but not unreasonably so. I'm not sure if this multiple server routine is "standard" at Coho or if there was a problem with our particular table. In any case, our bill was less than expected, and although no one mentioned it we’re pretty sure they adjusted our bill due to the service. So, kudos to them for that. All in all, great value to try someplace we hadn’t been for several years. Only wish the weather had been cooler so we could have sat outside.
This used to be a "go to" restaurant for my husband and myself. I think it is going through some growing pains with a new owner, new chef and a new menu. We were offered the Restaurant Week menu and a very limited regular menu. We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. After almost an hour, our appetizers arrived and less than five minutes later, our meals arrived. we had the appetizers and main dishes on the table all at the same time. One person ordered chicken and salmon was delivered. It was not replaced. During dinner, a glass of wine was ordered and delivered after dessert and coffee was served.
As far as the food, it was OK, but nothing special. Nice presentation, very small portions. The salmon was very good, but served with a garnish that was so small, it was basically salmon on a plate. The chicken was good, but the corn porridge served with it sounded better than it tasted. The kale, parmesan, pine nut and lemon salad was basically kale on a plate with a few nuts, hardly any cheese and no lemon.
With the new chef, it might take some time to get the menu, service and kitchen together. Will try again, in maybe a year.
While the food here tasted great, it wasn't worth the price per meal. We went here as a double date, and of the four of us, only one person had enough food to feel full after the meal. I don't know why the dinner plate was as expensive as it was for a small (probably 3oz) piece of fish and a cucumber/radish salad, especially considering a large burger with fries that filled the plate cost about half as the dinner plate. The dessert is delicious, and they have a good selection of liquor, but the price of food seemed unwarranted to me.
We visited Coho during Howard county restaurant week. The restaurant week site had them listed as a $20-25 dinner price point for the event. Checked out the restaurant week menu on Cohos site and was impressed by the 3 course price fixe menu. No price was listed on the restaurant website. When we arrived we received a different restaurant week menu and the price was $35. We did not order from the restaurant week offerings.
Server was unfriendly. Food was unimpressive. Location is very lovely. Hope the new owners can get it pulled together. We will not go back.
Coho Grill is very attractive and has a nice atmosphere. It was very noisy though on a Friday early evening (happy hour?) It was just my husband and myself so we had no difficulty in talking and hearing. However, with a larger group, it could be difficult. We both had the marinated steak salad which we enjoyed. We hope to see more variety on the menu next time.
The food was amazing, everything was cooked perfectly, and we didn't have to wait long at all for our food. The service was spot on. None of us wanted for anything while we were there, and our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. The best part was that the chef came out to our table and talked with us for a minute, just to make sure everything was great . We will definitely be back again.
This was our first visit since the big renovation. We liked the old Coho Grill: original menu with interesting selections, a nice upscale restaurant with good food and service in a nice atmosphere.
The new Coho Grill left us very disappointed. Uninspired menu, the restaurant week course selection was either chicken or salmon, which we didn't order The limited offerings on the main menu was not anything to write home about. Perhaps my expectations for a full-service restaurant were not realistic, this felt more like a country-club bar with a dinner menu tacked on for completeness. Unfortunately unless we hear that things change we won't be going back.
I understand they are going through a transition with a new owner and new chef. However, we were disappointed that the one item we went for is no longer offered even though it is still on the menu. One plate our food was served on was broken. Salt & pepper grinders on the table were filthy. Server was lack luster - not very friendly.
This is our first time in Coho since their reopening. Our waiter was very accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed his service and the lady who seemed to be the head server. Once we focused on the menu, we chose a simple salad, Maryland Crab Soup and tacos for lunch. The Maryland Crab Soup was different from most I have had but I enjoyed it. It had navy beans (I think), lots of veggies but not a lot of crab. It was more of a pleasantly spicy, tomato based vegetable bean soup with crab. My friend had all chicken tacos. I ordered chicken, salmon and steak. They were small, so I would suggest the 3 option if you are hungry. We both agreed that the chicken was a bit overcooked and dry. The flavor was mild but good with very little sauce to give it character and flavor. They gave us additional salsa to help. The salmon and steak were both very good, a tad oily from the saute, but enjoyable, especially the steak. I normally would prefer salmon but the tender steak was nicely marinated with a tasty, spicy sauce. If course, they were rather messy, as expected.
The room we were in was quiet with few people when we were there. I would say from the hard surfaces, it might have an "energetic" noise level when the restaurant is busy. And, the tables appear to be a bit close together so it may not be the best place for intimate conversation.
The new decor was better than I had heard from a few friends who went there when it first opened. (They may have added addition artwork and decoration.) I thought the dining area (the room off the bar area) was very pleasant with comfortable yet cheerful colors.
I'm interested in trying Coho Grill for dinner. Their new owner/head chef (as of July 1) has excellent credentials from experience in highly rated restaurants across the country. I'm anxious to try his new creations as he gets settled in his new position and hoping to have another successful and excellent restaurant in Columbia!

We all really enjoyed our meal from start to finish. We started with the crab dip which was great for sharing. A few of us ordered the special which was Rockfish it was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. Chef Thomas came out and
Greeted us which we enjoyed. We wished him much success.

As the restaurant has just transferred ownership, we were curious to see what new changes had been introduced. Right off the bat we were impressed as the new owner/chef came out to welcome us! Thomas was friendly and informative, answered all of our questions about the change in ownership, and informed us of some exciting changes that would be taking place moving forward. You could tell he was passionate about what he was doing and wanted to usher in a renaissance to the wonderful location he adopted. He knew well the issues that the restaurant had been facing with unfriendly staff and lackluster menu options and was eager to restore the establishment to a place everyone would love again!
As the restaurant had only exchanged ownership a week or two prior, no significant changes had made it yet, however, several specials featured by the new chef were available (and recommended) to us. In addition, several old menu items had seen a revision or complete rework for the time being. We ordered the crab dip as an appetizer without much expectation, only to experience the best crab dip I had ever enjoyed, hands down. It was clear that this new kitchen meant business.
My entire table ordered the specials for entrees following the recommendation. The crab cake followed in the Dip's footsteps and then some. I've had hundreds of crab cakes in my lifetime, but this one was one of the more memorable ones to date. It was absolutely perfectly cooked, soft and tender, and featured large lump crab opposed to the cheap shredded meat. Accompanied by pickled vegetables and an avocado puree, it was exceptional. For dessert, I enjoyed the banana bread pudding with a maple bourbon ice cream. I am not much of a dessert eater, but I felt obligated to try it, and I'm glad I did!
Though it was more of a preview of what was to come, we were greatly impressed by this new chef and staff. It holds a lot of promise and we are very excited to return as more changes get introduced!
The food was amazing! The view was amazing! A perfect place for a quiet dinner. I had the rockfish which was perfect! It was accompanied by a risotto with corn and tomatoes which was heavenly. My husband had the crab cakes which were amazing. We will make Coho grill a regular stop!
We were excited to learn Coho's got a new chef (from the French Laundry in CA) and we were not disappointed. Two of us got the fried greed tomatoes with crab meat appetizer. It was delicious, and we hope it stays on the menu. The flatbread appetizer was also quite tasty. All 4 of us got the scallops special, on perfectly prepared risotto. Our server could not have been more personable, gave helpful suggestions, and had the right balance between attentiveness and giving us time to socialize and enjoy our meal. We'll be back!
