Striving to bring the Caribbean to each diner, Coconuts Caribbean Restaurant in Palo Alto, CA opened in 2008 and has become a staple of the restaurant scene ever since. With the sound of calypso or reggae and a charmingly colorful setting, a visit to this restaurant is like a quick tropical holiday.
The whimsical menu at Coconuts Caribbean Restaurant is divided into "di small tings" as well as "di big tings", meaning starters and entres. There are also "di sweet tings" and a full bar menu with all kinds of craft cocktails and beer. Authenticity reigns at Coconuts Caribbean Restaurant and dishes include jerk specialties, lots of seafood, fresh fruits and classic items like a sweet potato pudding for dessert.
This is a personality plus place in the sea of faceless restaurants n Palo Alto. The music was great and the staff was friendly and warm-- no chip on their shoulders like so many restaurants in the area. We started with one of the specialty cocktails then moved on to perfectly- cooked coconut shrimp and delicious jerk chicken (white meat) with beans and rice. I wish I could have ordered more but portions are so generous nothing more was needed.
The outdoor dining is actually an alley painted in vibrant colors with focal point being a plastic palm tree. This place is very fun.
Great restaurant! The food is really excellent. I go as often as I can!
I've been going to Coconuts almost since it opened. I'm not sure if the ownership changed lately, but the food has definitely gone downhill. The menu has changed and some of my favorite dishes are no longer on it. The ones they have seem a little limited. I had a special - a fish curry - which I'd had before and loved, but this time I could barely eat it; it just wasn't the same. It was sloppy and slimy, and had almost more okra than fish - and okra is something many people dislike so I feel it was an odd choice to combine with the fish, even in a Caribbean restaurant. At least without warning people when telling them of the dish (it was a special so not on the menu). The starter was also not as good as it had been and the amazing guacamole they used to do didn't appear to be on the menu. The service was mostly good, and there's a pretty outdoor section in an alleyway between buildings. It's just a shame about the food, as I used to really look forward to having a meal here.
Always pleasantly surprised at the flavors (and quality) of the meals. Wish I had a bigger stomach!
The restaurant was hopping on a Friday night. Despite a reservation we had to wait as diners were lingering. The atmosphere is very lively and vibrant so be prepared for that. The service was a bit uneven due to so many customers. The food was good and we enjoyed it a great deal.
Our waiter was great - attentive, friendly and efficient. The food at Coconuts is always fantastic, especially the pork bites!
I suspect due to road construction on the street out front, there were fewer patrons than I would have expected...even for an early lunch. The music was a tad loud for how empty it was, but the food was outstanding. Try the Mango Lemonade!
There was definitely a party atmosphere during lunch hour this last Saturday. A large table was a roar in the same room as we were in. The noise was about 110 decibles by iPhone measurement. It hurt our ears. Otherwise, everything was very nice.
We love the hour at the restaurant. On this visit food took quite a bit longer to be served but still delicious.
You must get a side of the collard greens.
I would have given 5 stars to service but we told our waiter that we were attending a play. Our reservation was for 6:30 but we weren't served our food until 7:20 and we had to leave by 7:45 latest. Probably not the waiter's fault but it was a shame to have to rush eating our dinners. As soon as our food came we asked for our check and boxes. But it was so good we will go there again. This was our 2nd time there.
The service is abysmal, the kitchen either doesn't read the tickets or the waiter didn't ask for something I specifically mentioned. I asked them to bring my 2 apps along with the dinner of my family. When my food came first, they made no apologies, no attempts to discount our food, and the entrees came out a good 15 minutes after my food came. REALLY?
They take forever to refill your drink, the vibe is not Caribbean. I wish the original Jamaican owners were still running the place. Disappointed.
MUCH too noisy. We were with friends visiting from South Africa, and found conversation very difficult. Food was wonderful, but it was not at all conducive to talking.
We were a group of 4 and shared several different plates. Most dishes were good.....oxtail, jerked chicken, coconut shrimp---well seasoned and tasty. Portions were large and we actually shared the main courses between two people. However, the goat was dry and not well seasoned. Don't go if you want to talk with each other! The noise level was very, very high. We actually left and went somewhere else for dessert so we could relax and enjoy a quiet end to our evening.
My husband and I joined 2 friends who are new to the area for dinner here. We went early on a Sunday 5:30 pm and the restaurant was still relatively quiet so we got seated by the window. Each of us ordered a different drink, and each one was delicious (although service would have been 5 stars if our drink came out a little sooner ). Food portions were plenty and delicious! Our friend had lived in Costa Rica for a year and he said the food reminded him of when he was there - the mixed rice with beans, plantains etc. By the time we were leaving (around 8pm) every seat at the restaurant was filled - bustling with conversations and laughter. Food value also is great! It was my second time there and I will definitely go back again.
This is a new discovery for me. We enjoyed the oxtail stew, much recommended on Yelp. Roasted vegetables good. Plantains so-so. Key lime pie very good.
Inside too noisy to consider; hard surfaces; ambiance OK. Outside comfortable, off street, very pleasant; tables not crowded together; ambiance good to very good.
They took very long to seat us
Nice place, friendly staff, but vegetarian options were so so, under spiced, bland.
Wanted to taste good Caribbean dishes. Upon the suggestions of my daughter
I chose Coconuts Caribbean restaurant. The food was to my expectations
spicy, but not just hot, but with depth. Server suggested the habanero pepper
sauce for additional heat. Hot but not overboard. Hotter than most would enjoy.
I made a reservation at Coconuts as I had a party of five for Thursday night and they had some availability. As well, I had no been here prior, but I know it is a frequent choice for Stanford student social gatherings. The noise level in here is atrocious. It is extremely difficult to hear the people at your own table speak. Part of this is because they squish everyone into one section of the restaurant instead of spreading people throughout the space. To that end, the tables are placed way too close together so that even the staff cannot make their way to tables easily. This makes no sense, because there are entire sections where they have not sat anyone. The other thing is, they probably need to hire more wait staff. The servers are very friendly and are clearly trying their best, but they just seem overwhelmed. Similarly, we ordered our drinks and food at the same time, one person ordered two appetizers instead of an entree for their meal. First that person's appetizers came a good 10 minutes before anything else. Then the entrees. And then the drinks. This is not acceptable for drinks to take that long, to the point that they arrive after our food. From the time we ordered to the time they arrived, at least 20 minutes had passed. In terms of the food, I think it's just ok. The portions are HUGE but the food is a bit bland, not particularly exciting. The last point I would make is that I had made a reservation ahead of time for our table and yet when we arrived, they placed us at a table that fit 4, not 5. For that reason alone, I would not return because we were squished together.
Food is always delicious!
We reserved a table for Sunday lunch. First time there, we noticed that it's really loud and we can't hear what the person sitting across the table from us was saying. After we ordered, the kids meal arrived within 10 minutes and we were very happy with it. But then had to wait 50(!) More minutes for the adults dishes.
After 30 minutes or so the server came to the table telling us there was a delay in the kitchen (no Sherlock) and our dished would be right out. And then we waited 20 more minutes.
Once the food arrived I noticed that the water pitcher was already empty but the server disappeared before I could say anything. And then for 10 or 15 we all tried to get the servers attention. They were in- and-out of the room but no one bothered to look up and see us frantically waiving our hands.
The service was truelly oweful. I don't think we'll come back.
Very, very loud. The food was unpalatable. I had the white chicken dish. It was dry, very salty, and visually unappealing as everything on the plate was beige! My companion had a pork dish and had the exact comments. The drinks were good...I might go back just for a drink. We told our waitress we would like to order dessert. After 10 minutes with no dessert menu, we gave up and left. Over all, a pretty bad experience. I will not soon get over that plateful of beige food!!
We had the back area with one long table that was perfect for our moderate-sized dinner meeting party. Noise level was low so we could hear each other without difficulty, yet the overall ambiance of the restaurant was still present. The food is always amazing.
You don't find Oxtail on a menu often, but Coconuts Caribbean had them and with an interesting take. Very tender and well seasoned with a slight bbq flavor. Their halibut special was exceptional, cooked in a wonderful stew pot with a great coconut flavor. It was a pleasant surprise for us. The manager was extremely friendly and offered us refills on non-refill drinks for coming in during a slower time of the day. We're happy to go back if we get a chance.
Love the menu, I could make a whole meal on just picking all the sides the offer. Ox tail is always the best. We usually come with a big group, so there's lots of plate sharing. Service is always excellent, very accommodating to our party of 15. We'll be back!
Best pizza in the Bay Area
Curry goat. That is all
Went to lunch with a friend and had drinks, apps, entrees, and dessert.
"Everyting" was delicious!
Da pain killer
Spicy mango habanero margarita
Citrus brine pork
and sweet potato pudding
All of it had a nice little kick(including the beverages)
Love the open window and patio service
Staff is super friendly, helpful, and attentive
First time visit. Went for lunch with co-workers (it was just the 3 of us). Food was amazing. Each and every dish was perfect. However, nobody attended us for 15 minutes after being seated. Then we ordered ourselves at the bar. Even after that. water was not given for the longest time and then food took about 45-50 mins to come. To the point a table which came after us was served food before us!
Not been there for a while and they have changed a few things on the menu, it is more family style now.
Food was still great, but beware the portions for main courses are quite large.
Our waitress was not very attentive. The place was empty at the time we went, only us and one other table, and she basically ignored us, we had to call her over several times. We had to wait a while for water, and we got our drinks when we had almost finished our appetizers. She was chatting with her friends at the other table most of the time, and when asked by her boss to serve us she argued with her in front of everyone. We saw a sign on the window that they were looking for staff, so this may be a bit of a problem they have a the minute.
Excellent authentic Caribbean fare
great restaurant, great food, only turn off was the manager was pushy for us to exit to accommodate a book reservation. that was a completely turn OFF!
Fun place for groups--casual, friendly, tasty food!
I ordered the curried goat and was extremely disappointed. It was actually quite tasty but was just a bowl of bones in a curry sauce. There was about an iota of meat on each bone, and it took a lot of effort to get the meat off. That was it---no potatoes, no rice, no accompaniment at all. The other entrees all seemed to have maduros, plantains, rice and beans, something.
The dessert was also disappointing. It was the coconut creme brulee, which sounded fantastic. But I could barely taste the coconut, and the creme brulee was runny. There was actually clear liquid gathering in the bottom of the serving bowl. Very unappetizing.
The service was great & this restaurant has a lot of potential but they need to work on the food.
We were interested in trying a lot of items that were new to us, so we really enjoyed the appetizer sampler platter as a great way to start our meal. There was plenty of variety on the menu--both food and drinks--and the portions and quality were a good value for the price. Also recommended--the corn festival side dish. Our only regret is that we didn't have room to try dessert.
I was coming here for dinner. This was the first time I came for lunch and was not disappointed. The food was very flavorful. Recommend for a get-together with friends or a quick stop on your busy day.
I enjoyed my dining experience immensely and posted an outstanding review of my time at the Resturant . Not only is the food great. The service iwas outstanding. I visited with my twin teenage daughters who also tremendously enjoyed their experience. I posted my review on Yelp under name Rene J
Disappointed, did not seem like they seated us by the reservation we made with our birthday celebration in mind. We indicated this in our online reservation. No one acknowledged or went out of their way to accomodate the birthday person.
We had a group of 9 of us and was concerned if they can fit us in. They gave us our own dining room and made it special for us. The tasty food was very delicious with all those Caribbean spices melting in your mouth. Half of the fun was sharing each other food like family style to try the various dishes. Thanks for the memorable evening!
Great food, great service, great experience. It was my friend's birthday and they gave us free dessert!
