I asked to be put in a quiet area via Open Table and I could tell the host didn't read my note. The restaurant was wide open and she could have picked a nicer table since we booked ahead.

This was the second time I've been here... the concept and food choices are great; the service this time around not so much so. We placed a drink order almost immediately upon seating and I ordered a beer, which was brought to me 15 minutes later in the bottle. I asked for a glass and waited another 10 - 15 minutes, after which the waiter brought me a dripping wet, soapy glass from the kitchen. I ignored that and took a clean glass from the adjoining table. Another 10 - 15 minutes to get our food order taken... chips ran out and we asked for more and were told that would cost additional $. We said that was okay. Yes... 10 - 15 minutes later more chips arrived, seconds before the food arrived. At one point someone who looked like the owner walked around and spoke to staff sitting or standing alone; he looked at us and neither smiled nor said anything. Made me feel there was a major labor or management issue happening that all guests that night had just happened upon...

Really good food and service. Good value. Warm atmosphere with a low buzz but not too loud. Not your typical Tex-Mex or Mexican fair. If you like Mexican and want some very good food that’s fresh and different, stop by. We’ll be back for sure.

Kind of a mess and seemed to have trouble cleaning up empty plates and bringing more drinks. It's always a bad sign when you start stacking and tidying your table because you're tired of staring at dishes

We went to Barrio in Edina on a Friday night after making a reservation through OpenTable. It was very busy, with a 30 minute wait if you didn't have a reservation. We arrived about ten minutes before our reservation and were seated immediately.
The decor creates a nice ambiance, but it's definitely loud. Tables are fairly close together but I not awkwardly so, in my opinion. Our waiter brought us water right away and we ordered drinks, which took forever to come because there was a birthday party at the front of the restaurant and they had just placed their drink order, so it was nice of the waiter to tell us.
We ordered the chicken quesadilla to share and it was SO good! When our drinks finally arrived (Mama Cita and Mexican Mule) they were also delicious. I ordered a gringo taco and a grilled chicken taco, and I would order both again! My husband and the steak taco and an enchilada, which he also enjoyed. Other than the slow drink service (which was understandable given the large party up front), we had a fantastic experience!

I have never been to Cocina del Barrio before. I always make it a tradition to go out to eat at a place I have never dined before. My friend Craig highly recommended your restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was great!

Loved Cocino del Barrio at 50th and France. The food was fresh and flavorful. I asked for the salsa on the side as I have a somewhat low tolerance for hot spices. I had the tuna taco and it was excellent. The tuna was perfectly seared and served in a crisp flour tortilla. The Pico de Gallo had nice chunks of avocado in it. Friend had the corn chowder, made with fresh sweet corn. Equally great. Plus I was able ¡a practicar me espanol! Gracias por las comida buenas.

We've been to the downtown location many times and loved it. The Edina location (closer to home) wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The chef in the kitchen is in too much of a hurry to rush food out so the sugar cane shrimp we ordered was cooked but lacked the smoky grill char it should have had because it was removed from the grill too soon and the steak taco I had was literally raw and bloody inside. Service was vaguely pleasant but perfunctory - our server saw the steak taco on the table with one bite out of it and only asked if she could clear it, not if something was wrong. The next time I have a craving for Mexican food, I won't be returning to this location.

The food here is so yummy! There is great free parking in the ramp just behind the restaurant, which is really nice for the area. The only thing I didn't care for was the noise level. That's not a knock at the restaurant, it's simply not the noise level for me and I know many are not a fan of it when going out. Still, I would recommend it because they are a great restaurant.

What the restaurant features, tapas and tacos, they do very well. My wife and I started with the chips and salsa, which were OK. We both thoroughly enjoyed their grilled shrimp, grilled chicken and steak tacos. They were all good, but they were all made with soft corn tortillas, and since I'm not a fan I left the tortillas on my plate. My wife like them, though, and told me they were more authentic than flour tortillas. Whatever. Unfortunately, the black bean and the rice side dishes were also whatever, which is fine as filler but after taking the first bites of the tacos we were definitely expecting better. We thought we would finish with a sinful delight, churros. They took over 15 minutes to make, so we were hoping for greatness, and while they were delivered hot out of the deep fryer, they had so little sugar that we asked for more. I was expecting some sugar in a little bowl, which is actually what we got -- although it was a little bowl holding sugar and sweetener packets ala your local chain coffee shop. Our server told us that their version of churro, complete with a bit of runny chocolate milk (not sauce) on the side for dipping, was authentic. There it was again. While I can appreciate authentic (really!), I appreciate flavorful foods even more. My recommendation is to stick with the tapas and tacos at Cocina del Barrio and then find a nice dessert at one of the restaurants next door.

I always love the food at Barrio. You can never go wrong with anything to eat as far as I am concerned. Yesterday our waiter was attentive and tried to accommodate our requests to get door opened to the patio or to turn down the air conditioner. It was freezing in there!
Unfortunately we were told management would or could not do either.

The food is always delicious but they do not value the premium price the customer pays. Our table side guacamole was small and did not need the gigantic bowl it was served in. The $5 mahi mahi taco did not have enough mahi for the taco. I took 2 bites and was left with a cabbage taco. It was delicious but not worth it.
