Coast Ratings and Reviews
As I was driving to work in L.A., two Spanish radio station DJ’s (KLOVE) were raving about Shutters on the Beach. I looked it up, and sure enough, I discovered “Coast.”
I was invited to speak a CSU Dominguez Hills, so I drove to Carson, from Lancaster, and then to Santa Monica.
The food at Coast was magnificently fresh and delicious. My wife loved it, so I told my brother about it. We will be visiting soon with his fiancé who lives by the Grove.
The beach looked beautiful from our vantage point, but Santa Monica, LA County and the State CA leadership needs to clean up the beach. It’s to beautiful to be dirty and smelling.
We enjoyed brunch at Coast on the charming outdoor enclosed patio and were impressed by the freshness of the king salmon and inventiveness of its traditional brunch options. Upon entering the restaurant, we saw four fresh layer cakes beckoning us to leave room for dessert. Ultimately, we chose the coconut pineapple layer cake to end our meal. It was reminiscent of an old fashioned grandmother baked cake and was so memorable, we came back the next day for happy hour to try the chocolate one, which was equally delicious and incredibly balanced. We paired it with the happy hour Barbera red wine for a decadent treat. Coast is a true gem and all the staff make you feel welcome!
I found it difficult to find a restaurant in that area that offered more than just one dinner that didn't include fish or seafood, as I am allergic. There seemed to be many tasty items here so I was very excited for my date with my husband. We were visiting from Georgia and so we were also excited about California-style food.
Overall, Coast was disappointing. I ordered steak frites. The steak was undercooked, so I sent it back and it came out overcooked and dry. It did not come with any type of sauce, and was not good quality beef. The fries looked like the cheap variety that comes from the Sysco truck. Very little flavor happening in this dish, all for $31. I was also charged $5 for a glass of coke. My husband had a salmon burger with salad. The salad was a handful of mixed greens with zero vegetables incorporated and topped with salt and olive oil. Obviously he was not impressed.
The quality of food does not equal the value in money that this establishment charges. I would expect for a nicer restaurant to have pride in what comes out of the kitchen and clearly that is not the case at Coast.
3rd time dining at Coast and we have been very pleased with the food, location and service. Our waiter was Brian and he was very helpful with menu and drink choices and took very good care of us. I would recommend Coast for any dining needs, lunch dinner, drink (I can personally highly recommend the frozen Mudslide-YUM) Go on a sunny day and sit on the patio and enjoy the view of the ocean!
Not sure if it was an off day for the server but he just did not seem very accommodating. Both my client and myself asked for a black napkin because we wear black and he without hesitation said no. When we asked him if he could look he with hesitation went looking for one. This is a restaurant hotel and they don’t have one black napkin? He finally came back with a light tan stripped napkin not happy looking very annoyed. For a $100 lunch I️ would have expected better service.
Coast is a fun, casual, beachy alternative to the somewhat staid upstairs bar at Shutters. The decor is white overall, with splashes of color and the beach scene can't be beat, especially at sunset. The menu is great, lots of good choices. The dishes are well executed and the waitstaff can help guide you through the menu if desired.
First they didn't find my reservation. Then, they took my guests to a different table. Good thing that Messenger worked. After that they billed us before we asked. In middle of all these happening, a disturbing alarm noise kept ringing and ringing. So everything went against enjoying such a beautiful place and environment 😣😣
Nice patio lunch. Ambiance was perfect.
The food, not so much. I ordered the Crab Louis. The crab had no taste. The dressing was not a Louie dressing but some strange bright yellow mustardy dressing that ruined the whole salad.
The guacamole had no taste either and was a green dip....no chunks of avocado. Salsa tomatoes had a strange taste. I am not sure I would go back for the food. I know the bloody marys are good. I will stick to those.
I was excited to visit Coast again after not eating there for awhile. I was so disappointed to see that the $23.00 Thai chicken salad I ordered had hardly any chicken, and had no other ingredients than lettuce, cabbage and carrots. It was definitely not worth that price, nor did it reflect the fresh, innovative cuisine I had come to expect. My friend had the avocado toast for $17.00. She got two pieces of just ok sourdough bread, with sliced avocado and chopped tomatoes. Again, not very tasty, and for the price, it was ridiculous! I felt very taken advantage of. I never mind paying top dollar for a great meal. However, this was far below what I had come to expect at this restaurant. I will not be returning, sadly.
We used to come to coast every weekend as a family. However, last year my 4 year old was poisoned by a hot dog he ate there. I tried to follow up with the manager but had no response despite calling repeatedly. I was shocked by the lack of responsibility taken.
Two nights ago we decided to try it again and took my parents there. They had mussels and shockingly within 8 hours both were so badly sick.
I'm afraid I will never go back. Restaurants have a responsibility to run a clean, hygienic establishment especially charging the prices Coast charge and Coast failed in that responsibility.
