COAST Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I took a client and his wife here for dinner on Nov 11th. I have been to Coast several times over the years and always found it a bit overpriced but accepted it as the cost of the location and ambiance. On this experience, we ordered two crab dinners ($99 each), one lobster dinner ($70) and a fish n chips. The meal honestly looked like something you might get at Red Lobster (for a lot less). My lobster was tiny and chewy and came with steamed rice and what looked like frozen veggies from a bag. The crab dinners were the same, although the crab wasn't rubbery. All in all, for a $500 evening, I felt insulted and ripped off. There are so many fantastic restaurants in Vancouver that deserve a shot, Coast's arrogance has caught up to them.
This is one of my absolute favourite restaurants in the city. Not only is the food some of the best, what I really love about this restaurant and what makes it exceptional is the ambiance and staff. The entire staff makes you feel welcome right from your walk in and the wait and bar staff really make you feel like they enjoy having you there. If you're looking for amazing seafood, the food here merits a visit on its own, but if you're really looking for a great evening out Coast is a must!
Went to Coast as a friends recommendation for my boyfriends birthday and it was a great night out! Our server Natalie gave us both recommendations of entrees. I had the miso maple sablefish and it was so delicious! Something I’d never pick myself so im glad she was so helpful. A manager named Aaron came by to check up on our drinks and dinner a couple times and was very genuine and sincere. Overall really nice night out and i also like that there is parking right beside the restaurant so you aren’t roaming around trying to find a spot
On tight schedule, so both ordered lunch special: shrimp curry with coconut milk rice. Dish came in one bowl. Good luck trying to taste coconut milk rice drowned in tasteless curry. Guest's portion had four pieces of shrimp ... all of which fit on one small spoon. Only one was a "whole" shrimp.
I was trying to figure out if the mysterious cruciferous was broccoli or cauliflower...a couple still had some green spots but was otherwise white. Inspired by my guest's "four" pieces of shrimp, I went through my bowl methodically. At first it was almost funny. There was pepper, cauliflower, a piece of broccoli , two cut halves of a tiny fingerling potato, a cherry tomato...but as it became apparent that there was not even a single piece of shrimp, the fun disappeared. Unbelievable! I still had not eaten any of it. Perhaps they could bring shrimp or a menu but we needed to remedy the situation asap due to our tight schedule. But alas, our waitress was nowhere to be found.
Guest tasted his: "Hot (spicy) but no flavour. Don't bother."
Service was equally underwhelming. We were served by a young lady whose tattooed forearm was unfortunately the most memorable thing about her (not in a good way.) We received little to no service from her. Is she a magician in training? She's good at disappearing! She plunked down two glasses of water and disappeared. Finally came and took our order and vanished. Plunked down the two bowls, waited 20 seconds to ask how the first bites tasted. We hadn't even had time to HAVE a first bite. That was the last we saw of her until we had to take drastic action. We had to leave if we had any hope of having something edible. We didn't even get offered bread. There wasn't another server around. So, no one to ask for anything, not even the bill. We decided to leave. Stood up, slowly put on our coats and started walking toward the door, still incredulous. Only then did she give us any attention. Too late. Sorry (not sorry.)
Had the three course meal special, clam chowder appetizer, dungeoness crab with coconut steamed rice and vegs main, and crime brûlée dessert. Chowder was fine; dessert was average but not the least bit imaginative or interesting; the main was completely bland, flavourless to the point of not being worth the time to eat. The crab was properly cooked but cool upon arrival. The rice and vegetables (both steamed) were utterly devoid of any flavour. There wasn’t so much as a hint of spices, coconut, butter... nothing. And no means provided of enhancing the flavours beyond the salt in the shaker.
Service was adequate, friendly.
No atmosphere or ambience to speak of. Bright and almost harshly lit. Youthful crowd, every table full, noise level high as would be expected under these circumstances.
We won’t be back, not worth it.
We booked a reservation a week ahead. Our party of 4 were seated at a large round table in their upstairs area. In order to hear the conversation we had to moved to one side of the table. We ordered the prawns and calamari appetizers. The pawns were mushy and had a strong flavor. The calamari was tender and quite good though we didn't care for the buttermilk dipping sauce. The main courses were mixed . The Seafood Linguine was passible. The shell fish were cold (one mussel was not cleaned). The best meal was the Miso and Maple Syrup Sable Fish which was delicious and beautifully prepared. For that dish I might go back.
The food was very interesting and delicious. Our waiter was exceptional.! We ate inside but it had a lovely outside seating place with heaters and beautiful unique fireplaces at both ends. We loved it. The Smoked Salmon flatbread was very yummy and the waiter suggested the Saterfish over the Halibut and it superb.
A beautiful restaurant on posh Alberni street COAST promised the finest seafood in Vancouver. All of the food items demand premium prices and although tasty we had far better food at several other restaurants in Vancouver during our visit. This on top of mediocre service and a noisy and somewhat obnoxious dining room makes COAST one that I will not be returning to.
Excellent happy hour menu with great selections (food and beverages). Everything was fresh and delicious. From buck-a-shuck oysters, $5 beers, calamari, miso glazed sablefish to dessert sorbet. Everything was top quality. Service was excellent too. Would highly recommend this restaurant to any foodies.
We where in town for our wedding , we had our wedding dinner there , and everything was amazing right down to the littlest details, the service was great , the food was great , the manager was more then accommodating , we where early for our reservation and they where able to get us in no problem , they comped us with Champaign, deserts and everything for or special day !!! We even returned two days later for more hahaha.. Thanks again

This was not the first time we went to Coast to celebrate someone's birthday. This time we went because we needed to use up our gift card.
There is no need to mention that you're celebrating someone's birthday because they don't really care about it. One time I even got a call before the dining time telling me not to bring a cake into the restaurant! WHAT??? I mentioned we're celebrating a birthday didn't mean I was going to bring a cake! I know the rules! Not to mention they wouldn't bring you any free dessert nor put down happy birthday when you order a dessert......There are better restaurants in Vancouver with better services.
As for the food, it's really a hit and miss. The lobster that I ordered was over-cooked and dry. My friend's fish was quite good though. The clam chowder was also rich and creamy. Dessert....don't bother. My creme brulee was a thin layer or custard (maybe 3mm think) and top with a layer of caramelized sugar. The dark chocolate molten cake was super dry and the chef put too much salt (yes salt!)
The main course was very good but we were disappointed in the portions. The appetizer green salad was below what our expectations were for a restaurant of this calibre. Not much thought or ingredients went into it and what ingredients there were in it were not fresh.
We had amazing service, food, wine and dessert. Highly recommend Coast!! The pastry chef did a spectacular dessert for us. The waiter was helpful in finding us a spot close by for dancing after our dinner. He was super attentive. Such a great night, thanks Coast.
This is one of the best if not the best seafood restaurant in Vancouver. The seafood was fresh, perfectly cooked, seasoned and presented beautifully. The oyster bar is exceptional. The staff are very friendly and there was no shortage of excellent service from all of the staff. The wine list is amazing. If you have not tried the Brussel sprouts you are in for a heavenly treat indeed. The last time we visited we had room left for dessert, which was just as magnificent as the meals have been.
