Coast Guard House Ratings and Reviews
The brunch menu wasn't as appetizing as I thought it would be. The view is spectacular, but the service was horrible. The waiter didn't even refill my drink and I was the one paying for the whole party. I feel like they are better staffed and nicer during tourist season. Definitely not a great first impression.
Absolutely loved this place. The food was delicious, the service was great, and it was all fairly priced. I had the ramen. The broth was oil-based, rather than water-based. It took some adjusting, but was ultimately amazing, and the pork was phenomenal. All-around a wonderful place that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Narragansett!
We don't go to the Coast Guard House often. Although the setting is very nice, the food has not been as good as before Sandy. We went for their "Throwback Thursday" 1.5 lb steamed lobster because we thought it would be nice to have lobster without all the fuss and mess. First, let me qualify my opinion: I have been steaming lobsters in trash cans for over 3 decades, and I also have a propane hot plate I dream or boil then on. We can also do 2 at a time on our turbo burner on the stove. I have NEVER had lobster come out like they did Thursday night. My claws were absolutely perfect, but the tail was WAY overcooked; my wife's lobster tail was OK, but her claws were WAY undercooked. We don't bother to complain much; we just don't bother to go back. They did go us a window table though, but it was behind the bar. So, fat butts in light colored leisure suits reflected off our window, making looking at the full moon not so delightful. Maybe we'll try again in n another year or so.
I have nothing but nice things to say about our meal at The Coast Guard House; we enjoyed our Sunday evening dinner so much that we went back for lunch on Monday. The unusually warm weather was perfect for our lunch outdoors. It will be put on our "must go" list on our Rhode Island visits.
The seafood was good as always and the service was excellent, even though the restaurant was crowded. The only problem we encountered was the noise level. The noise in the main room on that afternoon was overwhelming - so much so that our ears hurt and very little conversation was possible. Everyone seemed to elevating their voice in order to be heard. We will come again but probably sit at the bar as we had before.
We had never been to the Coast Guard House before, only because we don't live in the immediate proximity. I didn't think I'd need reservations for lunch on a Friday in the middle of October, but I made them anyway. Good thing: the place was packed. I won't bore everybody with what we ate—everything was delicious and there are pictures on their website. I do think that the x-factor was our waitress, Melanie. She was solicitous without being officious, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the restaurant, the chefs, the menu, and our being there. She even set aside a meal that was running low so that we could order it before it ran out. I'm pretty sure you can't ask for a waitress by name, but if we go back we'll certainly try.
I'll start by saying the food and view are top notch!
We had a reservation for 5pm and arrived at 4:57. We had to wait about 7 minutes before we were sat. A group of 4 did not have a reservation, arrived just after us and ended up sitting before us. They only waited about 3 minutes. Admittedly, I have no restaurant experience but it seems to me my family should have sat first. Also, we waited about 5 minutes before the waitress came to our table to ask about drinks.
I love the Coast Guard House. It is one of my favorite places to dine. Tonight two, in my party of four, had the scallops. We were both very disappointed. The scallops were not that big, and there were only 4 scallops for the dinner. I regularly order scallops ( though the first time here) these were the saltiest scallops I have ever had. There was a small amount of polenta and no vegetable. This dinner was so over priced AND both of us were still hungry when we left the restaurant. I am very disappoint in this visit.
The other two in my party were very happy with their meals and portion sizes.
I will never order the scallop dinner again. I am just so disappointed by one of my favorite restaurants.
There should be another NOISE LEVEL category as WAY TOO LOUD. The open acoustics of the bare floor and long open seating add to some very noisy dinners. I couldn't hear my wife or daughter at all! A great meal with my ears ringing. It was as if everyone was shouting over everyone else.
I'm not one to complain, but the waitress we had for brunch was awful I will say one of the bus boy was very helpful and I did watch him tell are waitress that we need drinks and then the check which we waited almost 20 mins for I have always been a great tipper and I will say it was the first time I have never left a tip. The food was ok and the waterfront was great .
Beautiful moonrise, awesome calamari, lamb chop apps. Had the special risotto with lobster scallops and clams...to die for. Waitress Brenda was superb. Hostess was abrupt and i felt like I was bothering her. Overall tho, it did not take away from an elegant, romantic dinner.
We love visiting the Newport area and our niece introduced us to Narragansett when she started attending the University of Rhode Island. It is just lovely. The Coast Guard House sits right on the water, so the view is excellent, but they have great food and service to match. Their lobster ravioli is some of the best I've ever had. My salad was equally delicious. They have a nice variety on their menu and I am impressed by the fact that they have a variety of pastas on their menu which they make in house.
We went here because of a recommendation from a friend. It was a 90 minute ride from my house. It was the best meal I've had in a long time. The location is perfect. We had outside seating on the rocks. It is breath taking. It was a long beautiful ride with the top down. Have I told you how happy I am that I retired 🙌
We take out of town guests to the Coast Guard House frequently, because of the incredible views and up to recently, really great food. The last 3 times we were there (all for lunch) at least one of the group had a mediocre meal - twice with lobster rolls and once with the special. It's gotten a little embarrassing, as we had always raved about the food there. The servers are always very polite and cordial, but we've also noticed that there were errors made the last few times we were there. What's happened???
This was my second time at Coastguard House in a week and even better than the first visit. Food, service and ambiance were perfect. It was my son's 16th bday and everything about the evening felt special including the chocolate cake with the birthday candle brought to him by ( prearranged) surprise at the end. Our food was delicious. There were both seafood and non seafood lovers in our party and everyone left happy. We look forward to returning to Coastguard House again soon.
