Excellent breakfast here with a view of the beach and perfect service. Outstanding!
Everyone there was so nice and kind to us. One of our boys fell in the water and was full of sand, but they didn't even blink when we walked in. They were very accommodating to our needs and brought everything out very quickly. The food was amazing, the muffins, the latte, the french toast, the mac and cheese and their burgers were delicious. After all of that deliciousness we still ordered 3 different slices of Susie cakes. Which of course were amazing as well. Justin our waiter kept up with us and our orders and brought everything over with a smile. He's great!
Oh and my husband said the margaritas were amazing as well!
Great menu, good service and lovely room to eat in
Let's start with the fact that when I checked in the host was very friendly and professional. He sat me in a quiet corner because I had a business meeting. However, after that, no one ever came by my table for 45 minutes, even though a stream of servers passed by on their way to the outdoor terrace. No problem, I read the paper and waited for my colleague who was late. But really? 45 minutes? Finally, a busboy asked if we wanted water after she arrived. Then we waited another 15 minutes before a waitperson came by with menus. She ordered seared tuna and it came - just tuna on a plate with something else on the plate, but no sauce, no seasoning, no garnish? $30? I had coffee and no one asked if I wanted a refill.....I was shocked actually by the whole experience.
Good view of the beach. High price for good but not exceptional food
Poor presentation, extremely overpriced and cocky service.
Awful experience. We were really hopeful when we booked Coast, as we had some lovely meals at Casa Del Mar (sister hotel to Shutters) the previous year. We couldn't be more wrong. We got a lovely table by the window and things looked positive at first. We ordered our food, which included mains of prawn tagatelli and the half a hen (chicken cooked under a brick) this was recommended by our server. The pasta dish was ok, but the chicken was awful, really dry and unappetising.
During the course of our meal we got talking to the couple on the table next to us, they also had terrible food and sent back both the chicken and a steak (cold) to the kitchen.
However, the worst part of the experience was our server, who was unprofessional, and downright rude to paying customers. Our server didn't check how our food was, only our starters, my partner ate some but no where near all of the chicken. On collecting the plates when asked, we told the server (older male with glasses) that the chicken was terrible, he response was shocking - well you ate it!
I didn't expect this behaviour from our server, I thought this very unprofessional and disappointing from what we thought and had expected to be a professional establishment. We paid the bill but after our servers behaviour did not leave a tip (on every other meal this trip we have tipped at least 20%), on leaving the server continued to repeat - 'you ate it'.
Outstanding pasta wine and service on the beach.
Probably the worst dining experience I've had in recent memory.
Sunday night, not all that busy.
It took us nearly 45 minutes for us to receive our entrees. Steak was room temperature at that point, as well as the pasta. My mom raised me and my siblings on Costco pizza, the everything combo. You pick off whatever you want on your slice, eat it and shut up. That mentality is instilled in me to this day. I've never sent back a plate at a restaurant, and I almost did here Sunday night. But the fear of waiting another 45 minutes talked me out of it.
If it wasn't for the beach view and the beautiful dining room, this would have been a one star. Would not recommend.
Good food and service for business lunch. Lovely view by the ocean.
Waited 25 minutes to be seated outside notwithstanding a reservation. They forgot to bring our starter before main course, although once they realised they took it off the check. Kids Wagyu Burgers came very red even though we asked for medium/well.
Such a beautiful setting deserved better service.
Great place for a date. Lovely ambience and great service and food.
Excellent all around
Dinner with friends, food was good, everything was tasty. Few small details lacking in the service but nothing to complain about. Would happily go back.
Food was average at best, overpriced at worst. Services was not good. Only redeeming quality of this restaurant is the location. Avoid.
We came at sunset and we're rewarded with a window table, great service and excellent food. The swordfish and ahi tuna entrees were outstanding and the carrot cake desert was amazing
Just delightful! We ate outside and it was quiet and we could see the sunset and the temperature was perfect. Our server was particularly helpful with suggestions of wine and deciding on entrees. Totally enjoyed it! I’ll definitely go again soon. The only downside was getting there on a Saturday night...the traffic in Santa Monica has become very difficult and slow.
Ambience was great, food was incredibly bland and overpriced. Would not recommend eating at this restaurant, especially not for dinner.
I’ve been regularly traveling to LA for almost 10 years and I still make it a point to grab a meal at Coast every time I’m there. Haven’t been disappointed yet.
Food was a bit bland but the atmosphere was amazing.
This restaurant was recommended to me so we were really excited about going. To start when we were sat down our table was dirty. We were then handed menus and no one came to ask if we’d like a drink. I went to ask someone and they said they’d find our server. The menu was hugely expensive. Double the price of everywhere we’d eaten in Santa Monica. (This is generally expensive anyway)
The food was very average. I could have made better myself. Nothing special and a huge disappointment. I felt truly ripped off.
Lovely setting. Average food. Terrible service. I'm sure there are better options in Santa Monica
My husband and I decided to have lunch on Saturday at Shutters Hotel. We have always enjoyed the Coast Resataurant at the hotel and looked forward to an afternoon dining with the incredible views of the beach and ocean. The restaurant was not as busy as usual so we had especially attentive service. Our only disappointment was the food. My husbands chicken sandwich was cold and the French fries were cold and limp. And my quiche was undercooked and also cold. My husband and I were deep in conversation so we failed to tell one another of our disappointing lunch until after we were at the valet waiting for our car. We were surprised to discover that we both had a subpar meal and were sorry that we didn’t bring it to our waiters attention. It seems that the food has gone downhill since our last visit and considering that the prices have remained the same -more consideration should be given to the food quality before it reaches the customer.
The Coast at The Shutters on the Beach is a wonderful place to get a lovely and perfect lunch with a marvelous view. People are lovely, food and drinks tasty and you can have a family talk in calm while staying at The Coast. A beautiful ambiance on top.
Seemed like they were under staffed
Dirty dishes and glasses on tables and bar.
I had to move my table due to the Rude And drunk table of 4 on the outside. They were loud, obnoxious, and playing loud music on there smart phones! Management should have said something.
We moved inside where it seemed hectic.
Not a good experience!!
Their breakfast is much better than their lunch
For lunch appetizers we're OK ,but salads didn't taste right
I didn't like the cocktail
A lovely lunch to end our California holiday. Setting is lovely. Food and service were good, not great. Overall, would go back but it's not cheap.
We had a very pleasant meal at Coast. The place was quiet, the view of the beach was terrfiic. We thought the menu was great -lot's of interesting choices all fresh and delicious. The service was extremely accommodating - let us share dishes and very attentive.
Wonderful restaurant in a beautiful quaint hotel right on the ocean. Sat outside it did get a little chilly, recommend bringing light sweaters or coats. Our service from Roland was perfect!
we had a nice time at this restaurant the food was just okay. The service was good and the decor and atmosphere were nice and very clean. The price was a bit much for what it was and the portions where a bit small. but I expected this when I realized it was in a hotel.
Coast is very pretty and the service is good and overall we had a pleasant experience. But on the website and all over the restaurant and menu, they promote their "happy hour" which is a good deal--the prices are very different from the regular ones. But we were informed once we were there that you can only get those prices if you sit at the bar--which is inside and only has stool side-by-side seating. Since we were a group of three, that didn't work for us and our drinks and snacks ended up being wildly expensive. I would never have booked a table there if I had known that happy hour was limited to a few seats at the bar--something they never make clear ANYWHERE. So I won't be going back
Cioppino was phenomenal. Nice ambiance, beautiful views, staff is friendly and courteous, featured beers are delicious. We had a wonderful dinner!
The waiter brought entrees before the appetizers. The real issues is my displeasure with the snafu was met with Indifference. The waiter was offended that I was upset with the fact that my wine took forever and the entrees were served very fast and before the appetizers. It was appalling service. My glass of wine took forever to arrive at table. The waiter asked another waiter to serve the table. The second waiter was very nice and tried to make up for the incompetence of first one. Still it was as if every one pretended like this was no big deal. Meanwhile the first waiter had issues with other table. Good god. Horrible shocking experience. The swordfish was tough not very I good. Don’t get sword fish. I expected more. I was going to book room to stay in the hotel but left feeling lucky I did not
Beautiful ocean view for our first day of vacation in LA from Minnesota! Loved our lunch on the patio, had a delicious Cobb salad and prime rib sandwich.
Coast is the lower level cafe at Shutters in Santa Monica. It is located right on the water so the ocean views are excellent, while the prices are a little lower than the upstairs main dining room. Thus, it's a little more casual too.
Food is very good - much like a high end country club. Great salads, sandwiches and main courses. All made from scratch; however, the Mac and cheese lacks flavor and we our waiter agreed. Otherwise, excellent for sunset light dinner before walking on the beach or board walk.
Great date night or date brunch location. Make reservation because this is a popular place to be in summer.
Very nice oceanfront dining. Staff is very friendly. Good food.
Great place to hang out and talk business.
Solid food (although a bit overpriced); lobster roll was OK, Tuna tartar was excellent. Drinks were good but pricey as well. Ambiance/view/setting can’t be beat & justify the $$$.
Service was an A++. Lucinda was outstanding! Catered to our needs, made recommendations, was spot on and our 9 year old daughter couldn’t have been happier with her clam chowder & fries.
The atmosphere was great, the place is very nice itself.
The food and service was very good
