About Clyde Common
Established in 2007, Clyde Common offers European-inspired menus, an impressive wine list and signature cocktails. Chef Carlo Lamagna manages a carefully planned menu that offers everything from small plates to hearty entrees. Enjoy a light green salad or a hearty dish of grilled chicken leg served with Yukon gold potatoes, rhubarb and olives. I really like Clyde Common. Great Central location, fun place and of course really good food. One could put together a full dinner/meal or simply have snacks and everything in between. The kitchen ranges between very good and excellent. Our waiter was great. We let him know to hurry us along because we had a movie to catch nearby at Living Room
Great food with unique environment. The place feels different than any-other generic restaurant. I will certainly be coming back. Slight drawback was when I called the day of to check in on a reservation and asked about the location of the table I reserved for three. I specifically asked if our table was near the front door/entrance and was told that it's not which was unfortunately not true. Highly recommend making a reservation over the phone or specifying in detail in comments when reserving on line.
I shouldn't say that the food was overpriced because I'm sure they use excellent ingredients, but for the high, high price, the flavor did not deliver. We didn't eat a single entree that we liked. The pasta was bland and under-salted, also served relatively cold. The pork cheek (guanciale) was honestly inedible. The presentation left a lot to be desired and the meat was oddly sweet but not in a good way. It is very rare that I am not able to finish a piece of meat - I'll eat almost anything - but I couldn't eat this. The scallops (a starter) were actually pretty good, but two scallops for $17 seems a little pricey. None of the other starters were memorable. The service left something to be desired as well. The servers could often be seen standing at the hosts table – and I recognize it's a difficult job and they might have been busy – but it certainly seemed like they weren't doing a lot there other than waiting and it was hard to access them sometimes. They weren't super friendly. On a positive note, I will say that the negroni I had was probably the best I have ever had and I do think the lighting/ambiance are quite nice.
Flavors were underwhelming compared to descriptions on the menu. Service was adequate but a little awkward, perhaps in a true hipster fashion. We were seated near the door and the cold draft was quite unpleasant even though they had attempted to hang a curtain to block it.
For the money I would rather go to Andina.
The food was good and very flavorful. Only downside was the small portion sizes although they were priced reasonably well. Our server was great but itseemed like they were having some issues in the kitchen and initially brought out the wrong order after a bit of a wait. Would have expected a comped beverage in return for example but he did apologize. We ate here early on New Year Eve so it wasn't too crowded yet. If there's something special that pops up on the menu I'll head back, otherwise time to check out some other Portland hot spots!
Drinks were delicious here. Friendly service. Nice vibe, low light, and conveniently connected to The Ace Hotel. There was a minor communication issue surrounding us changing our reservation time -which we did via telephoning the restaurant rather than changing it on the Open Table site. We then got a phone call asking if we were going to make it , but we'd already re-scheduled the time to later, so... very minor. Overall, it was a great experience and I would go back in a heartbeat.
This restaurant is great for millennial and those who are not seeking a conversation had without shouting. The service was great and the food was fair (I could not eat the dish I ordered due to a very bitter taste but my companions enjoyed theirs enough) but the noise level prohibited us from talking without literally screaming...it was not an enjoyable evening for us but may be for others.
Everybody was fantastic, especially our server Erica. I was able to talk whiskey with Ben the bartender. They have a great selection for see hard to find and rare whiskey. The desserts were fantastic. For value, perhaps a slightly larger portion. It doesn't have to be of the main course, it could be of the side and the vegetable.
I like how they name their entire staff from server to owner to kitchen to bar on the drink menu. It goes to show just how much effort it takes to make a place successful.
Also I would encourage people to order the feast beef ribs. They looked absolutely delicious and proceeds go to hurricane Harvey relief.
Goat steak was a little bland and tough, as well as the potatoes on the same dish. The pickled squash and goat ribs were, however, excellent.
Clams were a bit salty but very flavorful. Anchovy toast was very well-balanced.
Drinks were amazing! Me and my date loved Trailer Daisy, and I also loved the Negroni and Daily Punch.
Will drop by again if we're in town!
First, what this place does right: Morgenthaler's whiskey-barrel aged negroni was the best I've ever had. And from the kitchen, the padron pepper app proved a worthy choice, combining the subtle flavor of vanilla with a mild but complex heat, finished with a good blistering. The anchovy toast burst with flavor and umami, providing more pleasure in one bite than our two entrees combined. Where this places misses: My $29 strip steak was so bland, I poked at it for 20 minutes before finally asking the waitress to bring me more pickled ramp sauce. The sauce truly elevated the last four bites of my dinner, providing just the right high note for the steak, but by then it was too late. My husband's "goat two ways" (osso bucco and sausage) showed innovation in concept but lacked flavor from the first bite with under-seasoned meat and a lack of acidity. My advice: Pass on dinner but go for a quick cocktail and apps.
I've been to Clyde Common before and have genuinely liked it. It's been a few years, and boy, no wonder why they were the only restaurant that have availability on a Sunday night. Food was ok, and waitress was fairly uninterested in us. Will probably return, but only for their happy hour at the bar.
Great Portland Dining Month experience. We loved the menu provided so three of us ordered that and the fourth ordered the scallops. The risotto was almost inedible though. So blan and way too much spice to be enjoyable. We ordered the charcuterie platter which is worth it! (But you have to ask for more bread because there is so much and only three slices.) It was worth coming back on it's own! In the future, I'd like our waitress to be a little more friendly. She was professional and attentive, but didn't show much personality.
The deinks were good and the food was good..there was nothing too amazing that stood out that would make me recommend a dish. I did the dining month option and was pleased with the appetizer but disappointed with the risotto....it was just a okay and good meal
Went to enjoy Dining Out Month special. Every thing was great. Service was attentive, helpful. Only problem, loud music playing, added voices from other tables, hard to have conversation. Either need to add additional sound deadening material or turn off music. Would recommend
to any one looking for authentic American cuisine.
When our group arrived for our dinner reservation the restaurant was filled with an incredibly loud, standing crowd of people that spilled into every corner. As it turns out it was a private retirement party. The restaurant staff did a superb job of acknowledging the potential problem and showering us with attention. Although our conversation was conducted at high decibels, the food was inventive and a good time was had by all. I plan to return under more normal circumstances.
Our neighborhood is taking turns planning a dining month outing. Clyde Common was our first. Selected because it would be the first visit to the restaurant for several and Oregon Live recommended it as a good value. The Portland Dining Month menu was a preset 3 course meal. The 1st course was an appetizer on the regular menu, the 2nd course a side, and the 3rd a dessert. All totaling less than the $29 PDM fixed price. Instead of showcasing their fine dining as we had hoped, we felt they sent us home hungry and disappointed. Nine of our party of 10 ordered the PDM offering. Not sure I'll give them a second chance.
The food runner kept sending over food that was for different tables and we never got our third dish which was deducted from our meal, but never explained for and server actually didn't believe me at first. Everything was served late and our server was very inattentive.
We go here frequently and were happy to get a reservation on Valentine's Day. We ended up arriving almost an hour early but were happily seated right away. Got to sit upstairs, which is always nice. Had the chicken feast and were pleased with it as always. Everyone is always great here and happy to answer questions. This place continues to be our favorite restaurant in Portland.
