Made a reservation and couldn’t seat us
Food quality and the general atmosphere are as good as ever. However, the waiter acted like customers were a bother to him. They weren't at all busy yet I had to get menus for us and we struggled to get and pay our check at the end of the meal.
Food was great, but if I could give negative stars for ambiance I would. The noise from the kitchen was crazy. At one point I had to get up from my table and point out that there were two different songs blaring through the restaurant--one coming from a boom box in the kitchen and the other over the speakers in the dining area. I would order take out, but would never eat here again.
It’s good Indian food, although we find the quality a bit variable from visit to visit. The service is very mediocre but it’s still our go- to Indian place because we think it’s fairly good and a fairly pleasant ambiance, even if a bit loud.
A nice place to have lunch. The building is a traditional San Francisco shop, with big windows and lots of daylight, in a quiet and hipster neighborhood. It is elegant, with linen tablecloths and the decoration is simple, but comfortable. Not overdone at all. Which for me it feels great. The food is average. You find the same Indian menu as anywhere else. I ordered a soup and couldn’t get it mild. It was spicy. The salad was average as well, but the cucumbers were not trimmed, which I didn’t like. So I had to trim them myself with fork and knife. Could have been better. Service is okay, but nothing to brag about. I would say an average Indian restaurant in a nice place.
Clay Oven on Haight was a nice surprise. Definitely authentic--many native Indians in the place, having family dinners. The portions are ample--we ordered 3 meat courses, plus naan and a veggie--my son had plenty to take home. The goat cheese naan was amazing, as were the other dishes. It wasn't noisy, just a nice place to spend time with friends or family.
Great place to meet with a friend in a new city! Food was fresh and very flavorful. Service was very attentive and helpful. Very fun, authentic atmosphere in downtown Haight!
Really enjoyed my visit. Food was really great and the service was terrific!!!
Not a great experience. I was there taking a client for lunch. Including us, there was a total of 4ppl in the restaurant. Usually, that's not a good sign and it was 12:30pm, the peak of the lunch rush. We sat down and waited. And waited for the server to come around. We had to call him over to take our order. As we were giving him our order, he walked away to answer the ringing phone. Then did not return. Again, had to call him back. I ordered the chicken kabobs and asked what came on the plate and didn't know. So ordered it anyway. My client ordered the lamb kabobs. With just 4ppl in the restaurant, it should not have taken the 35 minutes to bring the food out. And when it arrived, the lamb was so hard and chewy, my client sent it back. It was tremendously overcooked. Overall, I will not go back and there was no reason provided by the service or food to even give it a second chance. There are plenty of amazing Indian restaurants in the city. This was just not one of them.
I love Indian food and am always looking for some place new to try. I read the menu before going and saw a number of dishes I might like. I had the vegetable pakoras and the Kashmiri Biryani; both were excellent. The atmosphere was very Indian and very comfortable. The service started out great, BUT, towards the end of my meal I saw my waiter go out the front door and didn't return for over 10 minutes, and no one else seemed to care about me. This restaurant was well on its way to 5 stars, but this lapse in service really bothered me. I have waited tables and you never abandon a table so completely. If I'm in the area again, I may give them a second chance as the food WAS quite good.
Small pleasant Indian food. Solid quality.
I was disappointed in the food. It wasn't hot as requested nor did the keema naan have any flavor; however, I really like the goat cheese naan and would recommend that. If you're south asian, then you're probably not going to like this place as the food is bland in comparison to what you could get at your home.
Ordered lamb vindaloo, tandoori chicken, eggplant, matar paneer and Chana masala...all dishes were flavourful and spiced just as we asked. Just a little hint for those who use uber or lift, make sure you pick the right Clay Oven and don't just pick the default one that comes up. There are two restaurants far from each other.
Not too pricey, but the food wasn't great either. The Naan was a bit burnt, and the dishes were watery and bland. Service was good. But overall, I'm not coming here again.
If you like Indian food you need to try this restaurants .
My family visit often india and enjoy the food
There this one is really close to what you can get in this country . ( NORTH ).
This restaurant is neither on Haight nor us it in "the Haight". In addition it has changed its name to Indian Oven. We had delicious food. Freshly prepared. Attentive service.
Decent food but wait staff / servers lack in personable service in my opinion.
Lovely little spot, but the food seemed "only okay" to me. Excellent naan, the lamb was tender, the tandoori chicken fine - so why would I not go back? I want a restaurant to really make me say "WOW" and this one did not. Big take out business, so maybe my taste buds were having a night off. I don't know.
We came as a group of 12, half adults, half kids and were seated in the upstairs room, which was perfect because our party did not get in anyone else's way. The food was great, although the service could use just a touch more attention (we had to go downstairs to fetch the waiter a couple of times). Overall, however, we were very happy with the experience.
This particular night the service was horrible. They were busy, but still. I had much better service when there was only me and 2 other tables in the restaurant.
