Clay Oven Indian Restaurant - West Portal Ratings and Reviews
Decent, though not spectacular Indian food. The place is a bit of an 80s time warp, from the decor to the food - not in a bad way, but it is a throwback. The food was tasty, but a little bland and I've eaten better versions of each of the dishes. But it's not bad, and there were a few that were very good - the Tandoori Salmon for example. Rather abrupt and random service, but again not bad, just not particularly good. As long as your expectations aren't high, you'll get a reasonable meal for a reasonable price.
The restaurant has very good food, with a nice selection of both vegetarian and meat dishes. It is also quiet enough that it is easy to have a conversation with friends. It's accessible by Muni Metro and has convenient shopping and entertainment options nearby.
My family and I have dined here many times. They are always reliable. Good food-I love the chicken korma and mango lassi. Yes, I would recommend this restaurant. I want to try their lunch buffet, which I haven't had a chance to yet, but my wife has and said it was quite good.
We have been coming to this restaurant since it opened and it has grown to a really good place that we can come or bring our friends knowing that we will always consistently get excellent food and service. Food is hot and authentic, but not oily or greasy. Its very, very good.
Clay Oven West Portal provides a wide selection of Indian food in a comfortable setting with white tablecloths and candles the tables. The Tandoori chicken is outstanding. If you have three people, a single rice order is likely to suffice (unless you are teenage boys!).
A couple at our table asked for mild and got what I considered moderately spicy food. The waiter did bring something milder on request for these folks, but still a bit too spicy for them. However, one shouldn't go to an Indian restaurant unless one wants food with some bite.
The atmosphere is very nice. The wait staff is very attentive. Great spot for a quiet dinner when you want to talk. It isn't too noisy. Food is very good. I had the chicken korma and a mango lassi. Very enjoyable. I've eaten here many times with my family. Reliable.
My wife and I shared a cucumber salad, which was just sliced cucumbers and some tomatoes, with what appeared to be a bottled salad dressing on the side. I had the garlic naan, and it was a bit chewy. We each had tandori chicken, and it was very tasty, although they didn't bring the dipping sauces until we were almost through with the meal. The service was not very good. It took a long time to give our order and a long time to get it. The prices were extremely reasonable. It's worth a try if you like Indian food.
We went as a group of six with a toddler after visiting the SF Zoo. They didn't have crayons for the little one but were otherwise completely accommodating even though the atmosphere is somewhat fancy. The pakora to start was delicious. The saag paneer is always my test dish for a restaurant and it was excellent here -- creamy and spicy. Their medium spicy is definitely spicy! Would recommend to others.
Our first visit was impressive. The service was fine, but the food was better than my wife and I expected. She was impressed by the leaness of the lamb. I found the spices comfortably warm. The servings are large and we had an excellent repeat of the meal the next day for lunch. Will have to check Clay Oven again and compare to Roti, but Clay Oven is definitely an anticipated destination for us in the future.
Neighborhood gem, come here all the time for the great lunch buffet, dinner and late night feasts! Super friendly and attentive staff! Solid menu! A tad pricey for dinner but quality of food makes it worthwhile!! Try the garlic naan, the chicken tikka and the prawn saag! Outstanding! Ditto for the coconut ice cream!! Namaste!
I heard several good things about this restaurant and gave myself a try. The restaurant did not have a host or a receptionist. I mentioned two times to the server that I made a reservation. The guy asked my name and just nodded but didn't check me in and said go to the table. For the food, it is somewhat americanize flavor. Others Indians/Pakistanians have better food and service. No point to eat there and get an ignorant attitude. I have to wait for 3 days to clear my pension status and make sure I get the point. I have no inclination to return!
Pretty good for lunch buffet, variety of entree is average, price is always $9.99.
Not much service here, you're pretty much on your own since this is a buffet style lunch.
Their Clement Street location has better service mainly because the owner's there most of the time.
I love mango chutney but they no longer serve it at this W. Portal location unless you pay extra.
All in all this is a clean and well lit eatery with plenty of free parking nearby.
Usually we go to this restaurant and it is not so busy. On this Valentines day it was a mad house. It did not seem that the Open Table reservation had much meaning. Arrived at 7:30pm, took order around 8pm, served some food around 9pm, left around 9:30pm. This was not the normal service.
We went to this restaurant on a busy valentines Friday night. The place was packed and there were only two waiters. Service was extremely slow and at no time did a waiter come back to check on us. The manager walked by tables looking at the pace of food being eaten but never said or ask anything. Our appetizer never came and the food portions were a little smaller for the price. Although I recommend this place, I don't think I will be returning.
My family has been to dinner here a few times. The food and service is great but it is a bit pricey and I don't mind paying for good food but one of the noticeable problems was the rice!! We had rice for 4 and the waiter brought out two lovely dishes of rice but there's no way that amount of rice was enough for 4 and on top of that each dish which was supposed to be enough for 2 cost $6. So we paid $12 for two containers of rice which really was only enough for 2-3 people. That's a crazy price for rice and if it weren't for that the prices are worth it.
Love the decor and authentic music here. The food is also well presented and yummy, too. The servers here are very polite and are constantly checking in our comfort. It is also not so noisy as some other places. The prices are a bit high for my taste, but still worth a visit when one wants good, Indian food.
