Dinner and service was exceptional
We love going there and plan to go back when we're back in the atea
What an amazing Father’s Day! Waitress food ambience truly amazing!!! If you really want to impress someone you need to take them to the Clay Hill Farm!
The directions provided by OpenTable got us lost, but our reservation was honored even though we were a half hour late. Everyone was very nice and our waiter, Kelly, was super. Please put the correct directions on OpenTable and thank you.
Friends have raved about Clay Hill Farms for years. We had an opportunity and occasion to dine there. It's a beautiful place, and interior is just a lovely as the surrounding farmland. The staff were wonderful, and made useful suggestions.
We had appetizers of escargot and of shrimp. The escargot were fine. The four (4!) extra-large shrimp were thrown on a plate with maybe some lettuce and goo in the middle. We returned the shrimp.
The main courses were lamb shank (really good), duck slices (excellent), fish (fine), and steak (ordered medium rare, delivered medium, meh.) The sides were fine. Presentation was OK, but not great.
We shared two desserts: a strawberry/rhubarb betty (Sweet/Tart, and fine!), and creme brulee (fabulous).
So on balance, it was really nice but we were expecting a consistently marvelous meal.
Food, in general, was good but uninspired. Menu selections could be found anywhere. Wine list was sadly lacking. Our servers were very good.
Dinner with friends from out of town.
Excellent food with impeccable service!!
I would go back for a drink on the deck or at the bar because the location is lovely. There were lots of birds and the grounds are beautiful. However the food was mediocre and therefore a lot of money for a fair meal. Overall we were very disappointed in our meals. Thought it was going to be more farm to table and a more interesting menu.
This was probably our 3rd or 4th time to Clay Hill Farms over the years. Our first visit was over 9 years ago when we visited Ogunquit and stayed at the Gazebo Inn which we HIGHLY recommend. On that visit they had a Stay and Dinner package which included Clay Hill Farms dinner. Clay Hill is said to be fine dining and although I think that is accurate it is not the fanciest restaurant I have been to. I saw plenty of people wearing jeans while we were there but then again it is Maine where restaurants tend to be a bit more relaxed. I don't know that I would bring kids here unless they were well behaved. Their Prime Rib is a regular on the menu and it is really outstanding. My wife and I both had an appetizer and salad which were also very good. The dessert was not all that great, but then we are not big dessert people. The setting is beautiful. Clearly they have weddings on the grounds regularly and I can see why. The landscape and gardens are all well kept! I think Clay Hill Farms is a classy and classic place to visit and we will definitely make it one of our dinners every time we go to Ogunquit.
Celebrated a special anniversary recently and had a wonderful time. Our meal was delicious, both opting for prime rib. Salads and dessert was also very good. The service was outstanding, very attentive but non intrusive. Overall an excellent and enjoyable evening in a beautiful setting.
Service was wonderful,
Food delicious and it was a nice change to our favorite maine spots
My wife and I went to celebrate our 51th wedding anniversary. The food and service was excellent. I would highly recommend Clay Hill to anyone.
Clay Hill Farm is on beautiful grounds with lots of flowers and wildlife that you can see from the dining areas. I have eaten here three times and have never been disappointed . The food is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented with creative combinations. Their seasonal salads and specials are delightful.
Lovely, quiet restaurant with traditional favorites prepared well. Prime rib was delicious. Lounge area has a particularly lively view of the surrounding grounds.
Lovely setting, delicious food, impeccable service, in a very relaxed atmosphere...a pleasure to dine here.
Loved it, delicious dinner. Will definitely go back.
This visit was the 2nd in 2 years for our anniversary. We enjoyed the food, and the quietness of the restaurant. The piano in the background was perfect. Keep up the good work !!
My wife and I have gone to Clay Hill Farm on a few occasions, and it has never disappointed. We booked through the Open Table link on the Clay Hill Farm website, because the OpenTable site did not bring up Clay Hill Farm when we searched.
We started with a great Mussels appetizer, and I had a Prime Rib that was one of the best I have ever had. It was the smaller cut, which is sometimes a risk with Prime Rib, but this was delicious. My wife had the stuffed haddock, which she said was very good. We both enjoyed the potatoes as well, and the brownie sundae that we shared at the end was a fitting end to the meal.
We will definitely be going back again.
We invited a couple who was new to the area for dinner. As we have been in the past, they too were taken with the beautiful location in the woods, the excellent service and the good food.
We’ve been here twice and both occasions met all our expectations. The setting is beautiful, the food is wonderful, and the service superb. It was well worth the drive from Massachusetts, and we wil surely be back!
Four years ago I bought a gift certificate through one of those specials. I paid very little and received a $25 coupon. I did it on a whim. We enjoy going into Ogunquit from time to time and this was close, so I took a chance. We didn't get a chance to use it until the other night. Wow, I am so glad that I did because I found a hidden gem! We were seated on the porch, and were so delighted by the show of nature. It is a bird sanctuary of all things! They have upwards of 150 bird houses and there are several feeders as well. I know my birds quite well, but it was such a joy to be seated practically next to them! We were also entertained by a squirrel who was hanging upside down, trying to empty the feeders. I was sold at this point, but when the food arrived, I didn't expect it to beat out the entertainment! I had a difficult time keeping myself from moaning, it was that good. For dinner, we both had the stuffed haddock with lobster and sauce and Oh MY! I just about licked the plate clean! It was such an enjoyable experience that after dinner, we left the dining area and sat at the bar and enjoyed an after dinner International Coffee and continued to enjoy the entertainment. In the background of our evening, was a guitarist playing lovely music....the kind that you enjoy while eating. EVERYTHING was perfect, except.... our dinner was so filling that we had no room for either their huge carrot cake or their coconut cheesecake. Still, I was so content I wasn't upset that I had no room for desert... I wanted to savor the flavor of the meal that I had just eaten, all night! Travelers, do not miss the opportunity to dine in this quaint, off the beaten path gem... We are planning on making it one of our favorite places to go.
Always wonderful! Great food, great service, great ambiance! Wonderful music!
We go to Maine every year, and every year we go here, never disappoints, the staff is always accommodating and friendly, , the food is always cooked perfectly and tastes delicious. You can go for a romantic dinner and stay and move onto the lounge for the music afterwards. You can also eat outside surrounded by the beautiful gardens. They never rush you and keep intruding and yet they never disappear and make sure you satisfied.
Everything we had was over-the-top delicious. We both had lobster bisque, Caesar salad, and stuffed haddock. Absolutely wonderful meal!
Dirty table cloth, a little too homey and relaxed. Waitstaff have high opinions of themselves and establishment. Ambiance and pianist very nice.
35th wedding anniversary
We went to Clay Hill Farm to celebrate our daughter's graduation from college and it turned out to be the perfect place to go. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous meals and the quiet atmosphere. It was well worth the drive to get away from the bustle and busy-ness of Portsmouth and really be able to enjoy family and friends over delicious meals.
Dinner with friends
My husband and I have a special place in our hearts for Clay Hill because we held our wedding reception there in 2000. We went back for our anniversary this year, and I am sorry to say that we were deeply disappointed in our experience. The location is gorgeous (we loved watching the finches and chickadees darting about) and the service was fine, but the food was uninspired, bland, and ridiculously overpriced. My "Pekin Duck" (not sure why it is spelled this way on the menu) tasted like chicken, my husband's risotto had no flavor at all, and the portion sizes were small given the $28 and up prices. The wine list was uninteresting, and the only options for "by the glass" were brands that I can buy an entire bottle of at the local grocery store for their cost of a single serving. Sadly, we won't be returning to Clay Hill Farm even for the nostalgia.
my wife gives Clay Hill Farm a 195 out of 100. She loves the place, as do I. The food is always delicious and well presented. The staff is attentive and professional. The place is beautiful and the scenery is exceptional. We come here every time we visit the area. Its romantic, quiet, and just fantastic!
We love Clay Hill Farm Restaurant and dine there on any special occasion (excuse). The grounds are beautiful and we enjoy looking at out the birds enjoying the feeder. The piano player is always enjoyable. The cocktails and wine selection is excellent and the service and food has never disappointed.
I have been going to Clay Hill about since it opened. Been through it all. I love this place and have continued the tradition with my kids. This last meal/trip was for Mothers Day. The service, while not real busy at our particular time, was painfully slow. The food was very over done- all of it! We all understood, as it was a holiday and chalked it up to being pre-prepared for the rush. We travel about an hour and twenty minutes to get here, which isn't a problem. We come a /came a few times a month. Yes, that many- like I said, we love this place. Any way, they have changed the menu and no longer offer shrimp as a meal, nor filet mignon. Two of the biggest draws for me. I have made mention of this many times and they always say, "let us know when you are coming, and we will have it for you"! But for us, it is a destination spot and usually last minute. Hard to plan that like that. We haven't been back in a while, and while I do love it- it is tough to go to a spot when they don't really have anything you'd enjoy eating. I'm not a chicken guy, especially bone in. Don't like duck, as it's a little greasy, and I don't like fatty meats so prime rib has got to be pretty special for me. So the draw this time was tradition and pork tenderloin. There were five of us. Yes, we were forgiving, and no, we didn't complain...about food or service. I can only hope that they offer shrimp or fillet, without the other seafood that seem to accompany them. They will do just fine without us, but I really do love this place! Oh, and one other little thing; I know it's the new fashion trend, but get your servers to loose the "nose rings"! They aren't farm animals and really aren't very attractive to such otherwise good looking people.
As always, Clay Hill Farm did not disappoint. The prime rib and pan-seared salmon were superb as were the Maine clam cakes. The quiet atmosphere - seemingly so rare in restaurants these days - was enjoyed as was watching the birds outside.
We'll be back.
Our first time here. The location is charming and quaint. Ask for a table in the fireside room near the windows. The food was good but very ordinary. The menu is right out of 1980. I don’t like their policy that upcharges you $2 if you make a substitution. The staff were super friendly and the bartender was great. We loved the live piano music too.
We will go back.
Birthday dinner. Outstanding as always!
Great place to eat and the view with the large picture windows and all the lovely birds, with a pianist makes for a lovely atmosphere. Food was great be sure to describe how you would like your meal prepared as they aim to please.
Our waiter was excellent- efficient but willing to let us take our time and to gab-
the view out the widow was delightful as the humming birds twittered in the rhododendron flowers just barely budding.
the food was yummy and the portions perfect and the food was hot!
it was busy but quiet enough so we could talk and visit
Each time I am there it is like this!
We are regular diners at this establishment because we find it to be very comfortable and relaxed. The food has always been excellent. I am especially fond of the prime rib which has always been of highest quality and prepared to perfection. The staff is very friendly and provide excellent service.
