CJ's Grill Ratings and Reviews
Like many Mammoth restaurants trying to make a go, this place is dependent on the wait staff. While friendly, when we went they were understaffed and slow. The food was OK but when your paying $16 for a burger, you want it to be outstanding. I wasn't overly impressed but the food is decent and its a good location.
A friend recommended CJ's during our vacation to Mammoth. We took the open air bus from village directly to CJ's, very easy. Food was outstanding, as well as service. We had pretzel's bites which were excellent. My husband enjoyed burger and I enjoyed Ratatouille. Perfect place for meat eaters and non-meat eaters. AND home made ice cream was to die for!! We had cookies and cream which was delicious. It was so nice to leave the expensive restaurants in the village to dine at CJ's. We will return and recommend to our friends.
The evening experience was excellent the food was excellent especially the Mediterranean shrimp . Wine is a little pricey , compared to the rest of the restaurants in town . Our niece had a a bacon cheeseburger and had hair on the bacon which turned her off I noticed a gentleman in the kitchen with a very long black greasy hair maybe that's where came from ???
The hostess and wait staff are very friendly. The food was horrible. I ordered grilled chicken barbecue and a baked potato and a glass of red sangria.. Date ordered Caesar salad with chicken. The drink had a huge amount of sweet syrup at the bottom making it too sweet to drink. Date asked if the Caesar salad had a lot of dressing, didn't want it swimming with dressing. Wait staff said no the dressing wasn't swimming on salad. His came dripping with dressing which made all the lettuce completely wilted. Chicken in salad was chopped in teeny tiny cubes and there wasn't much of it. He sent back the salad. Meanwhile, I began to put butter on potato and it wouldn't melt because the potato was tepid and old. Forgot the sour cream too. They brought the same potato out instead of giving me a new one. . The chicken was so dry I could barely swallow it. The tiny drizzle of barbecue sauce was ridiculous. I should have ordered more barbecue sauce but by this time I was done with this place. This dinner was expensive! $22 for a piece of dry chicken and a cold potato.
Made a reservation through OpenTable for May 2, 2017.
One minor problem: Arrived at the restaurant at confirmed time to discover that THE RESTAURANT WAS CLOSED!
Ignore my ratings above since I can't rate a non-event - wouldn't let me leave a comment without completing rating section.
Our first visit to CJ's Grill for Easter Dinner in Mammoth after a day of skiing.
The person who greeted us and seated us was also our waitress.
She did a marvelous job taking care of us despite being on her own, a great employee!
The food was very good, my wife and I had steaks and salads my son had the fish & chips.
Overall it was a very good experience and we would definitely dine at CJ's again.
There were only two waiters in the restaurant and no front desk person. We waited longer than expected to be seated because the waiters were busy and they were trying to run the front desk as well. I had to go to the waiter to take our order because he was too busy attending to all the other tables. After that he tried his best. The burgers were good but all around it's an average quality food. When we finished we passed by 4 open tables and there were about 8-10 people standing to be seated with no frontdesk person attending to them. A restaurant should always have a hostess to attend to its customers and not expecting the waiters to run the whole place. It is not fair to both waiters and customers.
Several years ago, this was ABSOLUTELY my favorite Mammoth place to eat. In its current iteration, the food seems to have lost some of its sparkle. My Mahi Mahi was a bit over cooked and my son's crab cakes were over charred. That said, everything was still quite tasty and the single waiter was performing admirably in serving the entire restaurant. I miss the surprising perfection that was CJ's, but it is still worth an occasional meal.
We went to CJs for dinner. The service was very good and the server was quite nice. The iceburg lettuce with sirloin was great. They have great burgers too. We had 7 kids with us and the kids loved the food. This restaurant seems more suited to a lunch crowd, as it does not have the dinner ambiance. If you have kids then it is good for dinner. Not sure for an adult only dinner.
The owner was working the tables ALL alone as his staff was stuck working on the mountain, which he said happens from time to time. We were on vacation so in no rush! He was serving the tables with a smile and very pleasant!!
The food was delicious!! My kids had the bison burger and my husband and I had the chicken pot pie! I rarely finish a meal....but I scrapped the bowl clean!!!
We will definitely return next time we ski!! Thank you for the great service and wonderful food!!
We have eaten at CJ's before, and had a pleasant dinner on a Tuesday night. It was strange though to walk into a completely empty restaurant at 6:45. During our dinner 3 other parties eventually came in. Minor complaint: because the kitchen had nothing else to work on our food came out so fast dinner could have been over in 30 minutes (we hung out and stretched to 90 anyway). We had the Battle Burger (with veggie burger) -- in past visits this was amazing, this time pretty mediocre. Very good tomato soup. Prices are fair. If you want a comfortable welcoming place with a broad menu after skiing, CJ's is fine.
We made a reservation here for a Saturday night in the prime ski season of Mammoth history and the restaurant was closed. No warning of being closed and this site still took our reservation. Showed up on time and it was black-out closed. Based on principle alone I will never eat here nor recommend it. No excuse.
We made a reservation through open table and received an email confirmation. The evening of our reservation I called to tell them we were running late and got a recorded message saying the restaurant was closed and expected to reopen two days before. I tried calling six times and never got a human being. Not sure if the restaurant was open or not but we decided not to go. If you're going to take a reservation at least don't send a confirmation or change your outgoing message.
This restaurant is closed and should be removed from OpenTable. Like other diners, we made a reservation only to arrive at the restaurant to find it closed. And it did not appear as though it just closed - it's been closed for a while, and certainly long enough to update OpenTable and other online listings.
Thanks CJ for ruining my daughters 38th Birthday celebration. Made a reservation on Open Table for Saturday evening 2/25/2017 at 7:30 pm party of 6. When we arrived at the restaurant we found it closed for remodeling! This is after the reservation was confirmed by Open Table! Do you know how hard it is to get a reservation or walk in to a restaurant on a Saturday night in ski season in Mammoth? IMPOSSIBLE! When we return in a few weeks the one place we will avoid will be CJs Grill. I hope when they re open to speak with a live person and not a recording.
I made reservations for 2/24/17 and received a confirmation email. I called the restaurant shortly before my reservation time and got a message that the restaurant was CLOSED. Everything else in Mammoth was full, by-reservation-only, and I was left searching for a place to take my hungry toddler at the last minute. Absolutely NOT COOL.
Actually wanted to give zero stars to CJ Grille, yet Open Table would not let me do that.
Went to website. Looked through menus and photos. Liked what I saw. Website suggested reservations. Clicked on website provided reservations tab. Took me to Open Table. Made reservation. Walked on icy dangerous sidewalks in 10 degree weather here in Mammoth Mountain ski resort. So much snow we could not drive due to lack of adequate parking. Arrived on time at restaurant. Restaurant under tons of snow, no lights on in or outside of restaurant. CLOSED with no notices on restaurant door, nor notices on website, nor notices on Open Table. Need I say more!!!!
CJ Grill is a very casual good comfort food place. I had a burger, not real fancy, no "bacon jam" or other fad stuff. It was cooked to order, big patty, good cheese and condiments. She had a California burger, the same thing with no bun. Came out the way she asked. They substituted a side of Mac and cheese for fries with no up charge - the comfort food part. Not spectacular but good, basic cheesy Mac and cheese. With a glass of wine the total bill was about $32 before tax. Good value and nice people.
