CityGate Grille Ratings and Reviews
The experience at CityGate was excellent. The food was fabulous. My only hesitation in giving 4 stars instead of 5 was that the meal was pretty expensive. I’ll go again because the food is good but it’s probably more a special occasion restaurant rather than everyday dining.
We have Ben to this location a number of times. It was the busiest I have ever seen it. However we felt the food was average at best and the noise level very high. We were there for our anniversary dinner and it was not a romantic atmosphere. The biggest disappointment was the quality of the food.
The wine was good the drinks were over priced. The dinner was bland. Pork tenderloin and Chicken Farfalle. Not to be ordered. Bland, NO flavor. The Chicken was over cooked and dry. The pork was cooked OK but bland, very bland. Not busy and not average service. Inattentive. NOT going back.
We have dined at City Gate Grille at least 20 times and continue to return here for dinner and drinks. Service is very good and personable. The entire staff from the front door to the wait service is very polite and obliging. Wait staff is knowledgeable about the items on the menu and also the night's specials.
Overall rating for restaurant was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the service was friendly, helpful and professional. Only down-side for our group was the live music in the bar. Even though we were at the far end of the restaurant, it was difficult to carry on a conversation with each other when the band was playing and the singer was also singing. Seemed quite loud for this type of restaurant as there were several groups dining around the bar area.
Celebrated my mother in law's birthday here. After waiting at another restaurant we had reservations at and not getting in, we made last minute reservations at CityGate. We had been there once before and had a good experience, so we thought it would be a great alternative. Considering my mother in law has mobility issues and walks with an walker, and my father in law has a hearing aid, it's tough to find a restaurant with good food, but easy to navigate and still quiet enough to talk. The entrance to this restaurant had an easy pull up with valet - it is a little bit of a walk from there, but all level and easy to navigate with a walker or wheelchair. When we arrived, we were worried because the live band was pretty loud. They gave us our choice of shorter walk/closer to the band or farther walk/further away from the band. We chose further from the band, and again they gave us our choice of tables in that area. We were able to get a table that allowed my father in law to hear, and was easy for my mother in law to get into. The wait staff was great working around the walker and making sure every one was well taken care of. And the food was delicious (we all enjoyed our entrees)!! Great service and very kind hostess/manager. We will definitely return.
My wife and I come here on a fairly regular basis. It seems one thing is in common however... it's incredibly noisy! For conversation or date nite you can ONLY sit in the corner seat or you'll hear NOTHING. Food and wait staff are absolutely perfect! We may choose an alternate spot next time however... even took our dessert to go due to the noise level. Sorry folks - used to Love it here...
My girlfriend and I did a quick staycation night away just up the street for us by first having dinner at CityGate Grille then staying the night next door at the Hotel Arista.
Overall we both really loved CityGate Grille. Our waitress (Kristen, I think it was?) was great - very attentive, friendly and topped the experience. Only minor complaint was that we each ordered the same steak - bone-in filet - and when we were each half way through eating we realized our steaks were switched (I was eating her medium-well and she was eating my medium cooked steak). So we switched what was left and continued eating. We each thought the steaks were wonderful
The julienne vegetables as a side were delicious, rosemary french fries were fine (not great but okay - could not taste any rosemary on them), the wedge salad with blue cheese chunks and dressing was excellent, and the seasonal cranberry-peach cobbler with vanilla gelato was perfect. My girlfriend had some fruity cocktail with mango, pineapple and coconut rum that was very good.
They have an extensive menu with something that appeals to everyone! We chose the 4 course special and everything was excellent! I had pistachio crusted branzino and it was delicious! My friends who had steak said it was cooked to perfection! Our waiter was helpful making menu choices and also told us about specials other nights of the week! We definitely will be back starting with the $5 burger special because we saw it being served at the table next to us and it looked incredible! The atmosphere is warm and not at all noisy considering that there were quite a few people in the dining area. We all agreed that we discovered a gem tonight!
I have tried so hard to like the menu here but I still cannot . The brancino, my favorite dish was poorly done. Mandarin oranges in the brancino? It just does not work. Also, the spinach with this dish was terrible ! Bitter. The bread was warm, which is always a win for me. Wine choices were quite good and the Greek yogurt cheesecake was amazing.
Enjoyable, casual dining on a wonderful patio. We were first to arrive on a weekend evening (open at 5p.m.) and chose to sit on the patio, even though the temp and humidity were borderline. We were all by ourselves for most of our time there. A cheerful server named Kirsten did a wonderful job of greeting us and getting our meal underway. We enjoyed cocktails while a shared appetizer of Shrimp and Dates started us. Wish there would have been 6 pieces instead of 4 as we were a party of three. No one wanted to fill up on too many appetizers, though the Calamari was tempting me...Entrees of Salmon, Scallops and Pasta with Chicken filled our hungry bellies. Our bottle of Wente Merlot went perfectly with the meal. We had no space left for dessert, but were sure it would have been mouthwatering...I have been here for meals three or four times now, while my guest was newly experiencing the ambiance. I am sure the restaurant made a new friend in her. I'll be back as it is always a great experience.
I was asked how I wanted my filet done and I said medium well. The classic argument apparently. It was delivered rare and bloody inside. I sent it back and nicely asked it to be done more like medium well in the center. It came back reheated on the outside, but still rare on the inside. Everything else was nice, other than being loud from a live band and you had to almost yell to converse. If the chef doesn't want to cook meat any way other than rare, they should just say, "It comes rare, will that be OK?" They asked, but the chef apparently refused to cook it medium well. Heck, it wasn't even medium. Everyone except the chef, were embarrassed and very apologetic. Even the woman who was busing the tables was apologizing in Spanish. The waiter was told to comp my meal which I appreciated, however I would have much preferred my meal the way I asked for it. I would NEVER order meat there again, since you don't know who the chef was or will be. I go there for lunch with clients all the time, but I would take a pass on dinner in the future. I don't think understand that they are there to prepare my meal the way I want and its not up to them to decide how I should eat meat. What they do accomplish it to scare people off and they forget that those same people are their job security.
