City Tap House - UC Ratings and Reviews
We had a great dinner at the City Tap House. Unfortunately, the bar was closed for a private event, so we had to wait outside while our table was being prepared, but that gave us a chance to see their fanatasic outdoor deck! Good food, good service, and lots of great beers to choose from.
Went with 8 coworkers.... We had the seen the hundred mile happy hour advertised on the website. Unfortunately, the bar was reserved for a private party and waiter would not honor happy hour promo. A suggestion would be to either not promote the happy hour or allow it for the customers in the dining room when the bar is closed due to private parties. Aside from that.... The food and drinks were great.
City Tap House is a wonderful restaurant with a lively, festive mood. Located in University City the area is alive with people. Parking is not difficult as there are lots of metered spots in the area, plus some parking lots. We brought our 17 year old son to celebrate his SAT scores and he thought it was great to be in the heart of the city and surrounded by Penn students. The selection of food is excellent, they have everything you could want; filling entree salads, delicious flat bread pizzas, interesting sandwiches and spectacular full plates all priced moderately.
A little hard to find. Don't go up the stepos outside. Entrance is on street level which leads to an elevator to the restaurant.
Great beer selection. Not your everyday menu, with a lot of very interesting choices. Good number of TVs for watching a game and very large bar area good for a group setting.
My son is a student at Drexel and my wife and I decided to take a drive over the bridge into the city to visit and have a meal together.
The food we had was excellant but selection was definately lacking. Calamari appetizer was the best I've had in a while, but I will request to hold the olives next time (personal preference). Pizzas and burger were enjoyed by all.
The great beer selection is what will bring me back but I will struggle to find new items to try on the menu.
First time at City Tap House. Very impressive, relaxed tmosphere, outdoor dining with fire pits, nice touch! Menu was diverse with selectins for vegetarians, meat eaters, great appetizers. On Tap Beer selection, as advertised, was amazing! Nicely grouped to help out neophytes. Reasonable wine selection for non-beer drinkers.
Prices very reasonable, we will be back.
Being a bar/restaurant near a college, the bar area was filled with students, however the dining room was nicely set apart from the worst of the din. Our server was extremely friendly, with good recommendations on the dishes. The food exceeded our expectations and will keep us coming back. Recommended if you're looking for an establishment in Philly with a large specialty beer selection.
The bar scene here on Saturday night is incredible. Mostly college young, but enough older folks to feel comfortable for the above 21 crowd. It's loud, friendly, and packed. You can eat at the bar (or outside) as well as in the back where it is quieter but the sound from the front does carry. Stay with the usual bar food and you will do just fine --hamburgers, steak, and fries. The other dishes sound interesting but when we ventured off the beaten track to a vegan risotto, well, not great. Service is slow so be prepared.
It was Parent's Weekend in UPenn. We walked in and there wasn't much of a crowd. The waitress, who was very nice, took our order. 40 minutes later there was no food. Don't know what went wrong in the kitchen. Finally they brought out the food 1 item at a time. For example...bacon came with out the eggs, hash browns without the omelet. They did own up to their mistake and comped us our meal. I would try it again. food was good when it finally got there
I have eaten at City Tap House twice. Once for dinner, once for brunch. The food was very good on both occasions with unique takes on traditional American fare. The wait staff was very helpful, especially at dinner. The outdoor area was nice for brunch, but the umbrellas did not provide enough cover and we got some direct sun, so be careful. I'll eat there again.
The atmosphere was sleek yet warm... the outside patio with firepits was great, Service very good but food did not live up to the atmosphere at all. Beet salad was dressing was oily and flavorless - shrimp undercooked. Fish (char) bland, and even the appetizers were underwhelming - we had bruschetta and calamari. Calamari was probably best thing we were served but even that was a bit overcooked. Perhaps an off-night in the kitchen? I hope so because its too nice a spot not to have better quality food.
I went with 15 people and the service was still pretty good - everyone even got their food at about the same time. My burger was cooked perfectly, but the patty was a little thick for my taste - the bread/burger/cheese ratio was just not ideal. We got pumpkin creme brulee for dessert and that was surprisingly really good - not too pumpkiny like pumpkin flavored things sometimes are. It was perfect, actually.
The fire alarm went off for about 20 minutes while we were eating because it is in the same building as a dorm or something. I dont think they could do anything about it - just bad timing.
Anyway, I would definitly go back.
As a West Philly resident, I'm at City Tap House fairly often. The food is usually pretty good (with some occasional misses...blueberry cobbler that was just a pot of warm blueberries with no cobbler, I'm looking at you.), but the service can be lacking. It's a huge place, it seems like the servers forget about you sometimes, especially when sitting outside. Overall a good place for nice bar food/sandwiches/ribs (and of course, the extensive beer list)!
For a Penn student, Tap House is the clear choice in terms of bar menu. While it is a little pricey, it is perfect for the classy night out with friends. Brunch options are great for the morning after, and dinner is a must as well. The brunch menu changed, but the bistro burger (I substitute a poached egg for the fried) is always good. For dinner: I'm a big fan of the pizzas- I always get the sausage pizza (substituting pepperoni), and the burger is better than Bobby's in my opinion. Great place to take my dad when he visits! Not a huge fan of beer, but its always fun to try different things on the beer list!
City Tap House in a great place to sit back and relax both outside or at the bar. Unfortunately, their service and food are highly unreliable. Service generally lacks quality with servers having an attitude of disdain towards customers. Food is either fabulous or terrible. You can order the same dish on two visits and one it is full of flavor and hot and another it is delayed, dry, cold, and tastes like cardboard. On our visits the tamales were a perfect example of this. They can be excellent, ours were dry and cardboardish. We told our server and he was unresponsive. After waiting 45 minutes for our food, we decided to not talk to the manager and just pay and leave. Enjoy the beer and location, spin the wheel on food and server.
