At circa we are drawn to a time when food was fresh, natural and grown close to our homes.
We are committed to our community and welcome our neighbors as 'owners' of their own local eatery.

We demonstrate our commitment to our local farmers by showcasing their produce in our seasonal menus.

We even grow our own micro-crops of "Wall-Greens" in our vertical hydro-garden, right in the dining room.

Meatloaf is sublime. Bratwurst appetizer is a must. Lamb for mains is awesome. Chef mike has got it going on at reasonable prices. Take a date and bring some vinyl to spin on his turntable. It's a fantastic evening.

They have the vibe that you are looking for on a rainy evening. Old records playing, a cozy environment, great staff, and comforting food. Definitely a great little spot that you might miss if you didn't live around there, but worth making the drive for.

Had a flatbread with mushrooms and pesto, green bean casserole with mia take mushrooms, lamb shank with fig ragout and the special catch fish (grouper, at the time) on a bed of vegetables All were delectable, but the flatbread stood out most for me. Would heartily recommend. Worth noting, area parking is poor, prepare to walk. Establishment is also fairly small so make reservations

This is a nice spot. The record player and vinyls were a nice touch. Food was good, and the desserts were very tasty as well. Went for a bday party. It's low key with a mature atmosphere. Everyone was quite happy with their food selection.

we visited on Valentine's Day, so I can't speak to the general menu, and I don't know if the service was typical. It's a casual intimate neighborhood place. The hostess greeted us at the door and sat us immediately. The 2-tops on either side of us were a bit close, but they were nearing the end of their meals... a sign of careful seating in the dining room, and good pacing. It was a fixed-price menu with limited choices. We both had the beet salad, braised beef cheeks, and mint green tea creme brulee. They had advertised salmon on the website, but on the night of the event they had substituted seabass. We were a bit disappointed, but were just as happy to order the beef cheeks instead. Another couple who came in later decided not to stay when they found the salmon unavailable. The waitress explained that chef opted to go with seabass instead of salmon after seeing the fish in the market. While I applaud the chef's integrity, he should be aware that it cost him some customers.. those folks probably won't be back. The salad was lovely, well balanced with bleu cheese crumbles and home-pickled radish slices. The beef cheeks were delicious, tender and flavorful, and a generous portion. [My husband thought there was a texture issue.. the beef so tender, over a sweet potato puree with soft sauteed onions and spinach, it was almost all too much the same texture. it didn't bother me.] The mint green tea creme brulee was perhaps the best creme brulee I've ever tasted.. the subtle mint flavor was a surprise. It arrived topped with homemade strawberry ice cream, which was also delicious but almost felt like two desserts. The restaurant is small but didn't feel crowded. They play jazz music on the hifi sterero, which sounded great but it seemed that no one was tending the records.. there was often a long silent gap before someone remembered to put on another album. Overall, this was a very nice experience, delicious food and professional service.

This is honestly my favorite restaurant in San Diego. We can talk food in a minute. The ambiance and service in this place are amazing. There is always great jazz playing on vinyl records through a vintage stereo system. I'm a jazz and vintage stereo nut so this is amazing. The restaurant is cute and well decorated. They seem to have monthly events like beer or wine pairings. My wife and I went for a Valentines meal that didn't seem pretentious. The 3 course pairing was only $35 which seemed like a steal. Now on to the food. The chef makes everything from scratch. All the sauces and pickled vegetables. All the meats and cheeses are sourced locally. This place is as real and local as you will find in San Diego. Above and beyond that, the food is die-for delicious. I almost don't want to give a good review because I want to keep Circa my secret.

They pride themselves on serving locally grown produce and meats and it tastes like it. Fresh greens and meats makes their menu very flavorful. 3 of us ordered different entrees and sampled each and all were impressed. A very nice cozy spot for an intimate dining experience. A neighborhood nook with tables and a bar for eating and drinking as well. The staff was very friendly and answered all questions regarding the meal and kept the dinner moving along nicely. Highly recommend Circa for the evenings when you want an easy ambiance, and exceptional food.

I found Circa on my FB time line and decided to try it. What a wonderful surprise this delightful little gem is. I started with their delicious savory creamy mushroom soup du jour followed by a beautiful Kale salad with sliced apple and sugar roasted pecans. My main course was perfectly grilled bass which was their catch of the day. This was served sweet peas, mashed parsnip. The ambiance is very cozy and relaxing, the servers are fantastic and so friendly. This will be one of my regular favorite hidden gem.

This was a special event hosted by Circa and ACE. It was tasting and food pairing event with 5 different courses. The food was amazing and the pairings fantastic. It was such a fun, intimate experience with the chef and the owners of ACE. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I wish that these events happened more often! I will definitely be back.

We stopped in for the first time at Circa last Friday night and were happy with every aspect of the experience. The food was amazing! I'd definitely put it in the 'comfort food' category. My girlfriend had the beer can chicken and dumplings and I had a burger. Everything was really flavorful. Additionally, the beer selection was excellent. We're planning on coming back for brunch next!

Good food, excellent service and ambience. I had the brat benny. I found the potatoes to be undercooked, the sausage just ok, and my eggs yolks were set (nooooo! Though they promptly brought a new dish). The tarragon hollandaise was unique and delicious. My fellow diners' food was better than mine, I think. Further, the housemade jam was surprisingly good. The ambience and service were both excellent, however, and I will return to try something else and recommend the place to friends.

The sweet potato soup was amazing, had never had it before. btw peeps, this is the old Farmhouse Cafe location. Can't complain about my meal other than my wine pairing with dessert, it didn't fit.

The menu, the decor and the setting are the perfect combination of casual and comfortable blended with extraordinary. A favorite of mine for instance - a Caprese salad, was suddenly made extraordinary by the flair of a twist of cantaloupe melon. Meatloaf, a least favorite of mine, makes me suddenly wonder what else from my mothers repertoire might be made extraordinary on this menu - it was divine. But the best of course was my entree - the Risotto. I Love Risotto, I always order it because we never make it at home. I have eaten in many, many five star restaurants, in here in LA, in London, in the south of France. Even for me was ,this risotto was an experience for my taste buds worth writing a review for. Thank you.

Tried Circa for restaurant week with a group of friends. We enjoyed the comfort food (sweet potato soup, sirloin tips, chocolate mousse for me) and it's a cute place. It was a little loud since it was full and it's a small space, and service was a tad slow. Good experience overall though.

This restaurant is the real deal - cooking from scratch - fresh and local. Chef Mike Almos passion for food that is authentic, local, fresh, and full of flavor shows through at every turn. Flavor profiles are perfect - presentation is on point - personal touch is everywhere. Chef Mike knows food, beer and wine and is happy to spend time with customers talking about the local farms, breweries, and wineries. No pretenses here. Chef and staff are the real deal - committed to telling the retro, rustic, local story and committed to guest experience. Restaurant week sweet potato soup and Braised beef excellent - Smoked Porter Chocolate Mousse an absolute must for dessert. But don't miss the homemade ice creams either.

Wow- delicious food and really great service, so hard to find these days! The meatloaf and the chicken n dumplings were truly mouth-watering, mmmmm. The green bean casserole app wasn't my favorite, but my friend enjoyed it. Everything tasted fresh, great staff, and the ambience was one of the best in SD- I felt like I was in a romantic rustic woodland eatery in Europe. The only downside is that I'm 38 weeks pregnant and it was pretty hot in there! But normally that wouldn't bother me, in fact usually I hate AC blasting everywhere and making my food cold :) We will be back, thank you!

We went early on a Saturday evening. I liked the ambience and the fresh food concept was appealing. The jazz was also a nice touch. However, after waiting over thirty minutes for our appetizers to arrive, we were informed the kitchen didn't get our order. We were given rather tasteless mini-bisquits to tide us over while we waited longer for our appetizers. The food was so-so. My daughter thought the flatbread appetizer had a burned rubber taste. The chicken and dumplings was overly salty. Eating the dumplings was like eating little balls of salt. The fresh catch (halibut) was good. The service was good.

We had the sweet potato soup- the high point. Bratwurst and mustard appetizer - not bad, not great Main course braised pork with achiote, kale and yams - lacked flavor. Accompanying biscuits were small, misshapen and flavorless. Banana split - described on menu as being like bananas foster. Maybe because the banana had been partially cooked. Other than that, it bore no resemblance. It also had a DRY piece of cake in the mix. Although the service was good, it's not a good enough reason to return.

After reading a review of Circa, decided to try it but was disappointed. The green bean casserole was okay but beans were hard; the meat loaf had an odd taste to it and the dessert shortbread tasted like it was about 3 three days old. The old Farmhouse which was wonderful but pricey....wanted to love Circa for the same reasons (fresh food, organic, cozy, French ambiance, good service, neighborhood gem, etc.) but the food/menu just didnt carry it. The salads were just OK, and the entrees were not as inviting as we wanted. The chicken and dumplings which are a house favorite were quite salty while I had the pork shoulder which was rather good. This was our second visit to Circa but we just felt the menu was selective enough. I hope this restaurant does well and makes a few changes to the menu.......I wish this restaurant well but don't think we will return.

Chef came out several times to chat and then go back to whip up some nice concoctions from the kitchen. Very friendly staff. Very open to the wines our group brought to the restaurant. Corkage friendly. Only downside is that I live > 30 miles away. Double thumbs up! Look forward to going back in the near future.

While we are still in mourning for our beloved Farmhouse Cafe, Circa looks set to find a regular spot on our rotation when we are looking for dinner in the 'hood. Food was tasty, wine list is extremely fairly priced, and the funky retro atmosphere charms without cloying. Really enjoyed the music, and hope next time to be able to get a seat at the bar so we can get to know the new owner.
