Circa is my wife and I's go-to place for a nice date or anniversary dinner. Service is always excellent, the atmosphere is casual and cozy and the food is the best in the area hands down.
We had the Bison meatloaf, it was amazing. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. My only real complaint is that it gets loud in the fairly small restaurant, which makes it hard to hear your dinner companion.
Second time my wife and I have been there. The food and service are amazing. Well worth a try.
Our first time at Circa 1918. Nice little restaurant with an urban vibe. Long and narrow layout, similar to some areas of NYC and has the feel of the old Six Bar Bistro that closed down in Phoebus. Would recommend to anyone who loves good food and company (not too loud to talk comfortably). The bar area looks like a great place to meet friends or make new ones.
Thursday night special 3 course meal was really outstanding; super great food, good service and a real price performer.
Sorry to say there were no vegetables served with a three course meal on Valentine’s Day. Too much sodium and fat! As it was my first time there, i was very disappointed that it was practically elbow to elbow with other patrons. The couple next to us had butts in their faces from the bar. They barely talked to each other because they looked like they felt as crowded as we were - not good on Valentine’s. No need to post this just let the restaurant know. Thanks.
Lovely Valentine's Day dinner; we had a four course meal without the optional wine pairing. By the end of the meal both of us were full. Delicious, well crafted and presented food. Pricey, but you get what you pay for - Circa is no Cheddar's or Applebees. I also love how intimate the restaurant is!
This was a pleasant surprise for the missus and I. I'd heard from my coworkers that this was a quaint, hip, romantic restaurant to try. While the prices are on the higher side, the food selection is excellent. Nuanced choices with more on the menu than just your typical fare, we delved in gladly. My wife chose the venison and I chose the steak. The wine - a Chilean- I paired with was, sadly, a poor choice. I prefer a more robust, dry red to pair with my steak. However, that was my fault as i didn't stick with my usual. Both entrees were cooked to perfection and would rival celebrity chef dishes. Our waiter was quick, attentive and very thorough. We procured reservations ahead of time, and I'm glad we did! It was busy without being overly packed. We arrived 30 mins early but we're seated at our table immediately. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will return, soon. Thank you for a wonderful, romantic dining experience.
My husband and I did a date night at Circa1819. we loved the cozy atmosphere, it reminded us of being back in Europe. We went on a Tuesday it was five dollar wine night which was a nice surprise. We started off with a wonderful appetizer and each had an entrée, all three of our food selections were absolutely tantalizingly delicious. We enjoyed our visit and will return!
The food and service was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Romantic atmosphere, small menu= unique creative cuisine, service is really good, not your typical restaurant. The have Chefs...not cooks, you wont be disappointed!!
The duck was amazing and the lamb burger perhaps one of the best burgers ever!
As usual, Circa 1918 does not disappoint. The quality of the food, the attention, and the experience always leaves me greatly satisfied.
The food and service were fantastic. Our server, Mattie, was very knowledgeable and helpful in his recommendations. We were there to celebrate my wife's birthday, and will definitely be back. The grits and risotto were not just side items but could easily stand by themselves - both were delicious.
By far our favorite local restaurant. The food is always done incredibly well, extremely flavorful, and the service is incredible. A great restaurant for good drinks and food whether for a special occasion or a weeknight out.
Just De-lish!!!! It was awesome, from start to finish! I highly recommend making reservations!
Food was delicious, service was great, but wasn't very pleased with the paper napkins.
Hands down best meal I've ever had. Service was fantastic. We will definitely return.
Brought my dad for a birthday dinner. I called to confirm the reservation and the gentleman said he meant to call me about the seating because he wasn’t sure I’d like it. Then recanted and said never mind, he fixed the seating. We ended up at the table furthest to the kitchen next to the hall leading to the bathroom. My dad’s a pretty big guy and I felt like the table was very small and he was partially blocking the hallway with his seat. I’m not sure that there WAS a worse seat and then it got “fixed”. However, the staff was very friendly and the food was amazing as always. I will return, but next time I will speak up to switch seats if this occurs again.
The service felt very personable. The lamb”cetta” was cooked perfectly. The lemon cheesecake is always our favorite to end the meal. The atmosphere always creates elegance and intimacy, but also comfort.
I took my date to Circa 1918 as part of restaurant week. For 40$ each, we had a three course meal that was quite delicious. She enjoyed scallops and marlin, while I had a curry bisque and bison meatloaf. Our server, Kip, happily explained the menu options and was very engaging. Though it was our first time in the restaurant, Kip made us feel very welcomed. The main menu is a bit pricey, and you see why in the food quality and range of flavor. We will absolutely be back for a special occasion.
My husband and I love Circa 1918 and think it is the best restaurant in Newport News! We’ve eaten there during restaurant week in previous years so we’re excited to see this year’s menu and specifically made a reservation for Restaurant Week. A friend was in town for work and we figured it was the perfect place to bring her - great service, great food!
Kip was awesome food was awesome
We have eaten at Circa. It has been other than excellent. This restaurant week the entire meal—from amuse vouches through bison meat loaf and Colorado (?) venison to the desserts—was brilliant!
Excellent small venue..My first time visting. My only issue was we were seated next to the door and I was cold. The food and service was excellent!!
Awesome, great food, great service
As always, a simply fabulous total experience. Food, wine, service, ambiance, all exceptional!
We are from Williamsburg, and this is our favorite local restaurant, albeit 40 minutes away in neighboring Newport News! Three visits over the last year, and the food, service, and overall vibe of the place is consistently outstanding. Knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating service, intimate atmosphere, and always creative and well proportioned/balanced "foodie" platings, course by course. Ingenious combinations of flavors are expertly presented, and the menu responds to seasonal and local influences. The stretch of two blocks it resides in, Hilton Village, is a two-block English styled retail center of an area on the Historic Register built as a WW1 neighborhood for Newport News Shipbuilders. Thus the name of the restaurant w/ the date of the village's establishment. It is no exaggeration to say this is one of the strongest anchors for that area's revitalization, and I would encourage you to check out some of the antique shops, bakery, and other merchants, and make an afternoon of it. Cap it off w/ early dinner at Circa 1918 and you will be rewarded for having left the best for last....
Very nice atmosphere and Kip and the rest of the folks are very kind. Would highly recommend for any occasion.
Circa 1918 has a very creative menu. It is all delicious and while the portions aren’t huge they are filling. I would definitely recommend it to friends. Its location in the historic Hilton Village district of Newport News is quite charming too.
