Circa 1918 Ratings and Reviews
We go to Circa 1918 before concerts at the Ferguson Center - a five minute ride away. The menu is creative (plus they maintain some signature items such as Bison Meatloaf - exquisite), the food is expertly prepared and the service is first rate. This was our fifth visit over the last year; always look forward to returning.
The local acclaim for this place is well-established and perfectly justified, with little need for additional word from us. Tony yet gracious atmosphere, with affable and capable service. Every dish was beautiful, interesting, and delicious. Hoping to return soon with friends!
This was our 3d occasion to dine at Circa 1918--we continue to be very impressed, and believe this to be the best restaurant in Newport News. As the dining and areas filled to Saturday-evening capacity, things got a bit noisy...but with laughter and true companionship.
Date and I met here as a blind date location. Wow was I surprised, I live in Hampton and thought the service, attentiveness of the server, his suggestions for appetizers and dinner for new comers was fantastic. I had the scallops and my date had the meatloaf it was SUPERB!
The only down fall that another guest was listening in on our conversation but because the date was going so well I was not going to let that ruin the date.
It has already been discussed to visit again.
My boyfriend and I decided to try this out for a dinner date on a Saturday. We had reservations for 8:15 and were greeted at the door by the host. After we were seated, our waiter introduced himself and gave us a brief overview of the restaurant and menu, to include the seasonal rotations, wine recommendations etc.
We decided the foie gras for an appetizer, and it arrived on a bed of greens. Great presentation and it was delicious. I took our waiter's recommendation and ordered the red snapper. I am originally from Hawai'i and have not been satisfied with any fish dishes outside of the island. This dish was to die for, it was perfectly cooked and came apart with little to no effort. The snapper was served on a bed of panko crusted onions, brussel sprouts and roasted tomatoes. I couldn't finish the onions but all else was devoured. My boyfriend ordered the salmon and once again, perfectly cooked (medium rare). We were delighted with our meal choices!
If you prefer an intimate setting with amazing food and laid back atmosphere...this restaurant is for you. It was our first time there and we felt right at home with the service we received. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a gem in Hampton Roads where it is overwhelmed with franchise restaurants. Our waiter definitely set the tone for us and we look forward to dining here again in the near future.
We are not from Newport News, we travel to visit our son who is attending college. Circa is our “go to” restaurant for dinner every time we are in town!
We always have a great experience dining at Circa!
Food and service is always excellent! We have ordered off the menu as well as the nightly specials...and can never go wrong!
Had a Saturday night 7:30 reservation for three. Overall everything was fabulous and we had a great dinner. We had a warm welcome by the host, a nice table, and exceptional well-paced service! The appetizer special (grilled octopus) was flawless as were all our main courses (roasted leg of lamb special, red snapper, pork loin). The Brussels sprouts leaves garnishing the pork were beyond delicious. Portions were generous. We were dining at peak hour on a weekend and the place was packed -- so it was a bit on the loud side. But we look forward to returning soon!
We celebrated our anniversary here. The restaurant is quite small. Some would call it cozy and some might call it cramped. The food and service are out of this world. The dishes are quite innovative with many unusual ingredients. We had an Oregon Pinot noir that was excellent. The wine list is not cheap but it is good. Overall a very pleasant evening
Great gourmet food. Interesting and well-prepared. Good seafood entrees but nothing on menu (Saturday night) for vegetarians. Nice ambiance. Small place and full so a bit loud but could carry on a conversation. Expensive so only for special occasions. Long wine list. Beer selection good but not outstanding. Good friendly service (though I did have to wait just a bit and try to get waiter's attention for second beer.) Appealing neighborhood place with outdoor dining available. Would definitely recommend or take non-vegetarian guests there for a special meal.
The food was good but not great. The bison meatloaf was too spicy which over-powered the flavor of the meat. The scallops were pretty good but not memorable. I would like to try a few other dishes before I make a final decision but not blown away by the experience.
This place is so small but gorgeous scenery. It has a certain ambiance that's almost breath taking. The staff was excellent and very pleasant. The food was AMAZING to say the least creative and flavorful. I totally recommend this for a date night!
We have been before and every time is a celebration of taste on the palate. The food here is the best on the Peninsula. From the first bite you experience a mixture of various flavors in your mouth and are not quite sure what they are, but are just overcome with satisfaction and pleasure. Not a "Fancy" restaurant but it doesn't want to be. I highly recommend as the menu not to mention the Chef here is unbelievable.
Our visit to Circa 1918 exceeded our expectations! Because the reservation day was actually our 55th Anniversary day we made certain requests, Circa 1918 met those requests. Our meal choices were from the Wine Pairing Menu, we were very pleased with our choices. Even though no rolls or bread were included and the meal portion sizes were small we left Circa 1918 feeling satisfied.
Circa 1918 popped up on Google when I was searching for a nice restaurant for dinner, while visiting Newport News. It looked like an interesting place from their website (my husband and I are *foodies"), so we decided to try it. It was really worth it! Cozy place, great food and excellent service! Loved it! Would make a point to go back if we are ever in this area again.
Our server, Paul, was very attentive and provided detailed information about the menu items. There were six of us celebrating a birthday and everyone's entree was excellent, as well as the soup and appetizers. I ordered the scallops in a corn bread puree -magnificent!
Circa 1918 is a great local favorite in Newport News. We happened to be there on a Tuesday which is $5 wine night. I tried two of the three reds and my wife had one of the whites and they were all very good. The host/server, Paul, was very friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu, including the wines, and the quality of everything on the menu is superb. I highly recommend the manchego chorizo churros and the caprese, when available. My wife loved the scallops and the rib eye was fantastic. It's a bit pricey, so we don't visit regularly, but we may have to visit more frequently on Tuesdays for appetizers and wine. :-)
