Circa 1875 Ratings and Reviews
Although the restaurant is so beautiful and inviting, it needs to work on their food. The Coquilles St. Jacques did not have any resemblance to the original dish. unproportionate amount of sauce to scallops. When asked the duck came with seared crunchy skin the waiter said the duck had no skin, which was not true it had skin but not crunchy...otherwise, the duck was good. The lamb chops were so fatty we send them back. Although the restaurant is so beautiful it is far too expensive for the quality of the food. I would not go there again.
My experience was not pleasant for neither myself nor my companion. We arrived early, and were told to wait in the adjoining bar, but then told to leave the bar and that we could not wait there as they were not open either, despite the cold and wind outside. Eventually someone from the bar came and told us we cold wait in the bar. The service in the restaurant, once we were seated, was quite nice, but the food was quite horrible. I've lived in France, and am quite familiar with the food and can say the food here simply was not good, neither mine nor my companions. I was content to work my way through the appetizer, but when I received the duck and it was not only completely bland tasting and unseasoned, but tasted like like it had seen better days. I had to return it. I was not charged for it. I wish we had sent back my companions steak, which was also a poor cut and not seasoned well. The fries were disgusting and inedible.
Food superb..... as always..... great service.... called and had chef make steak tartare as starter...... is my go to restaurant..... always recommend to guest and visitors.....best of all ... usually see Savannah friends .... ever had a complaint concerning foot or service. .... wish they served Sweetbreads some time .. I know ..no one knows what they are
While visiting Savannah we went to Circa 1875 on the recommendation of a friend. We're so glad we did! We sat on the pub side and had a great time as well as a great birthday dinner. The service was good, the owner friendly and the food and wine fantastic! Can't wait to go back to Savannah to have the Frisse salad with lardons and poached egg again. Scallops and pate were delicious as well!
The ambiance was fantastic. Our waitstaff was on top of things, and we were seated right on time. The food was great, flavor-wise. However both the dry aged NY Strip and the rib-eye were a little sub-par. Neither plate or it’s accompanying side were any more than lukewarm when served. What was supposed to be a rare strip was more medium, and what was supposed to be a medium rib-eye was extremely rare. We told our waitstaff and they offered to put the rib-eye back on and said the strip looked rare. We didn’t argue because we didn’t want to be wasteful or wait, but it was not our first time to eat a steak, and we both are well versed in food. When the rib-eye came back it was so well done the edges were burned and of course at this point on top of the edges being black crisps it was also very tough. We enjoyed the environment, it was absolutely lovely. But we would not get steak IF we went back. It was very dissatisfying as far as the food itself was concerned.
Great little French style bistro with a great bar next door attached. Food is good to very good, the trout was excellent. Criticism is based on service. We were there for a relaxed meal on NYE and it was obvious the waiter wanted us out as soon as possible in order to flip the table and max out his tips. It all felt very 'rushed' and not 'Relaxed French' as we hoped. We'd booked 2 months in advance for the special occasion and left a little disappointed. Went to the bar next door afterwards and had a great time.
There are not words to express how much we loved Circa 1975. We went for dinner before a show on New Year's Eve and everything was wonderful. The food was outstanding, the service excellent (Kristian was terrific), and the ambiance delightful. A friendly restaurant with everything you could want in a special meal. In fact, we enjoyed it so much we came back after the show to "ring" in the New Year. The bar experience was fabulous...we've been in very upscale places that didn't do anything for New Year's Eve (in fact they had a soccer game on the television), Circa 1875 didn't miss a beat. They provided hats and noisemakers for all the people in the bar as well as complimentary champagne. Servers as well as management were wonderful, happy to bring in a new year, celebrating with all the patrons. You should not miss Circa 1875 if you are anywhere near Savannah. I know we'll be back!
My husband and I took our parents here as a Christmas gift when they were visiting Savannah from DC. Our reservation was at 8pm but our table wasn't ready when we first showed up, so we waited at the bar. The bar service was a little slow, but the staff was friendly. The food was delicious. Beautiful atmosphere. By the time dinner was done, we had no room for dessert. My mother in law said it was her favorite restaurant in all of Savannah.
Very French restaurant. Some might say the decor is a bit over the top but I liked it. Service was excellent and attentive and the food was delicious. We were seated immediately even though the restaurant was already very busy (yes, we had a reservation). A good place for a very nice meal with a pretty good wine list as well.
Circa has always been a favorite, but now they have solidified themselves as the star at the top of my list. They took a special evening and made it exactly what I always imagined it should be. Their hospitality and kindness was unmatched from the manager, to the hostess, to the waitress and beyond. And I can’t begin to express how truly wonderful the food is. Attention to detail and fullness of flavor is beyond what you’ll find anywhere else in Savannah. A true local gem.
I have chosen this place because of very positive reviews in Fodor,s guide book, Trip Advisor and Open Table to spend first evening on vacation in Savannah. Unfortunately this was a mistake. We came earlier and to their credit were seated right away. However, the table we were at should not have been placed there in the first place. It is right next to the service window that connects the main hall and the bar next door, so that every time when something is passed back and forth waiters would bump into my chair. What made it worse is that it was very cold outside and every time when the front door would open (which seemed to be very other minute) a stream of icy wind would go over our table. My wife had to put her winter coat back on.
Appetizers came to the table fast, but then we waited about 50 minutes to get the main course. Our waiter seemed to be more concerned cleaning other tables than serving us. They were obviously overbooked with more and more people coming in, staying at the door and leaving without ever being helped. The hostess would disappear from the front while crowds of people would come in and leave the front door open with cold wind blowing in. Finally one of the waiters started asking them to either get in or out, but close the door. Our waiter was somewhat apologetic, but his argument was mostly that “ we can see what goes on”. Even though I could see what goes on, it is not our fault that they put in twice as many tables that the space, the kitchen and the staff can handle.
The food was good, but nothing special, certainly not worth waiting for 50 min in cold overcrowded space. Our waiter was somewhat unenthusiastically suggesting that we can get a free desert to compensate for wait, but then he got busy with something else again, so by the time he showed again, we decided that it was time to leave rather than wait again for that free desert. He brought the check, but then we had to wait again to pay. I am not coming back here.
It took an hour for out main course to come and one of our dishes (the duck) was cold by the time it got to us. The waiter was incredibly nice and we could tell he was keeping tabs on the kitchen but for some reason it took them 1 whole hour to cook a cold duck. They ended up complimenting the duck but still had the wine not been good it would have been a bad experience.
The food quality was good overall and they have a very nice selection of wines. The place is nice but they could do something about the front door that slams every time people walks out.
We were sat in the basement despite the main dining room appearing rather empty. Our server was very attentive however it took 2 hours to receive our dinner. While we were offered a free dessert due to the wait, overall the food and wine was average at best, not worth the money.
I made reservations at Circa 1975 because the restaurant was featured on a list of Savannah establishments that were gluten-free friendly. What makes a restaurant particularly friendly to those of us who can't have gluten is when the staff is knowledgeable of which entreés on the menu accommodate our diet restrictions. I so appreciate that. I was not disappointed. Our waiter was so helpful with my choices.
The restaurant, itself, is lovely--a cozy romantic atmosphere. We actually ate in the lower level by the wine cubby room.
I had a tasty, moist bone-in chicken breast. My husband had the filet with truffle oil drenched steak fries. The steak was melt-in-your-mouth!! Yummy stuff.
I recommend the place, for sure.
I was in Savannah on business around Christmas. The concierge recommended this restaurant and it looked great on Open Table.
This place took me back to Paris. The decor and ambiance was authentic French. So was the classic bistro menu. Chicken, trout, and steak frites. I had the steak frites. The fries were nice and crispy. The steak was cooked just the way I like it.
I started my evening with an excellent French75. The waiter chose a glass of red wine to go with my steak.
I had a lovely time here. So will you.
Noise level very high. Piped in music too loud. Seating very cramped. Had tables in aisle whose chairs abutted chairs for tables next to West wall. As cramped was the area a possible fire evacuation would be near impossible. Will not return to this establish
All the staff were really friendly and accommodating. We ate at the bar by choice as it was a really friendly atmosphere and the restaurant seemed a bit quieter. The guys behind the bar were very attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes we asked about. Definitely one we’ll visit again when we’re back in Savannah.
The staff was outstanding! We were helped by so many Tony the GM what a great person Mary or waitress in the bar boy what a fabulous person she is helpful accommodating knowledgeable and attentive to our wants and needs as if we were the only ones there. Then there was Christian what a superb waiter and let me tell you he had crew with us. There were 6 in our party and not a dull minute but he kept us watered and happy all evening. It has been along time since we had such an enjoyable dinner. The food was great and the staff i just can't say enough about them.
Dinner didn't disappoint. We ordered appetizers and main entrees orders were veal, trout and seafood crepe. All delicious. Service was very good although it might have been nice if wait staff had presented a birthday dessert to table even though no formals desserts were ordered. Cappuccino was the only disappointment of the evening.
This casual French restaurant has some creative dishes as well as traditional French cuisine. All of the dishes are very good. The service is outstanding. Loved the downstairs dining room. The main level dining area is small, but the downstairs is even smaller. There is a rather large bar next door with the same menu. If you can't get a table in the dining rooms, try eating in the bar.
My wife and I really like this place! This was our 2nd time here, and both times we sat in the gastropub side. Food is really good, great wine list, and it is lively but not too loud where you can’t talk. Service is excellent! The beer list is just ok although they might have more beers not on the menu. Great spot for a long dinner!
