The service was excellent but other than that we were disappointed with the experience. I was here 20 years ago and loved everything about it. I realize that was a long time ago, but the venue looks very, very tired and in dire need of a refresh. It feels as if it could close down any day. For the price (over $200 for two people for dinner) the food was adequate at best. I am not a picky diner or complainer and it is very unusual for me to leave a negative review. I would not recommend Cicada for anything other than a very quiet place to have a drink.
It was a solid experience with a few odd moments...server pressured me to have an appetizer ‘because everyone else was..” (2 of 4 others?) he highlighted drinks ‘the ladies liked because they hid the alcohol taste.” To my 23 year old. Weird.
Wonderful Art Deco ambiance. Service was very good and food was above average but a little pricey.
We had a reservation but the hostess kept trying to seat us at bad tables when there were plenty of nicer tables available.
Also, the short ribs on the prix fixe menu were dry and bland.
What a great spot with absolutely fantastic service. The food was amazing and the ambience was perfect for our Valentine’s Day date. It is rather pricey, but a fun dinner. Again, the service was fantastic!
Nice venue. Average food. Drinks are very good. Lots of history to the building but I wouldn’t go back to dine again if all they had was the food.
Overall nice ambience service was good too but a little disappointed by the food. Could have been better .
I thought I’d take the wife out for a nice Valentines dinner:
The food started out ok, the appetizers were actually quite decent (not $95 per person good bit, it was a first course) and then we waited for 20+ minutes for cold risotto, again that was semi-decent....then we waited at least 35 min for our main course- my wife had the Sea Bass and I had the super disappointing Short Ribs. The staff were very nice and friendly but, took way to long to get anything out of the kitchen. I went through 2 baskets of bread and an entire liter of water- I got to know the water guy, he was very cool; practically coming by our table every time I took a sip! The waiter, although he seemed nice, was absent most of the night and hardly said more than a few words the entire time.
That said, once the food made its way out, it looked pretty good on the plate. However, as good as it looked; it tasted rancid, the veggies were over cooked, and half the plate was cold. My wife’s plate, also looked good but, the vegetables were also over cooked, and the fish had more of a jerky texture than we’ve ever experienced.
I had been here a few tunes, the last time was about 2 years ago (because it’s a bit out of our normal date night budget) and expected the food would be the same. maybe there was a new chef that night ? or something awfully cruel happened. Sorely disappointed and very much dissatisfied considering the reputation of the restaurant & the price of the meal.
$95 per person pre-fix Valentine’s dinner - waited nearly an hour for main course after the previous plate. Too late to eat by the time it arrived and I sent mine back. Manager credited the plate since I didn’t eat it. My opinion is that $95 per person for food only is at the top level of cost for a food only meal in LA and the restaurant charging that price should be operating at that level, always. Here, it was amateurish at best. Nevermind making for a bad finish to the holiday dinner.
This is a beautiful location with mediocre food, drinks, and service. For the price point everything was bad. It feels like this venue rides on the beautiful historic location as an excuse to overcharge for what is effectively hotel food and hotel bar cocktails. I won't be going back.
Wish it was a regular menu but great !!!
The experience at Cicada was amazing. The server was very attentive and courteous. We were a party of eight and yet all of our dishes came out at the exact same time, which was exceptional because we all began dining at the same time. The food was delicious. We all loved our dishes. I will definetly recommend Cicada to others!
I loved my experience with Cicada! I wish they had music playing
Unless you go on a night when a band is playing prepare for an evening of awkward silence. Background music was too low
Was sooo hot, probably 80 degrees. Food was average
Food is great, but a little pricey for the amount you get. Everything was delicious though.
The food was decent, but our main waiter was so RUDE! The secondary wait was great but the main waiter was rude and unfriendly and was a grey cloud for my birthday..
I came here to celebrate my 3 year anniversary with my boyfriend and it was amazing. The atmosphere was great and the music was very good. Our server was extremely nice and the food was very fulfilling and tasteful. We are actually looking into having our wedding here because it was that good! I’d highly recommend this venue for a special occasion.
Extremely Romantic! Had a great time!
terrible service. Food quality at Denny's more likely better.
The restaurant was very quiet on a Friday night. The food and decor were great though. I suppose the themed nights would be a better experience.
The restaurant was a film location of Pretty woman. Their antique interior was impressive, and food was really nice.
We didn't have chance to listen live jazz.. but it's still value to visit for dinner.
One of Los Angeles's BEST places to eat in the entire city. We are never let down with the excellent service, incredible food and high end formal atmosphere. Also, a very beautiful place for a lovely formal wedding! Cicada & the Oviatt building that it is in is an historical landmark for Los Angeles and is one of the very 1st Art Deco buildings built in L.A. This is a GOT TO GO SEE!
Spent dinner here with my fiancé. The music and performers were amazing and entertaining. The service was exceptional and the food was delicious. Couldn't get over how beautiful it is inside!
We had a great time enjoyed the atmosphere
The whole experience memorable. Would go back.
The prices have increased a lot over the years. I do think the price point could come down a little. The food is delicious and the venue spectacular.
Beautiful restaurant circa 1920 with amazing Art Deco interior. New chef from Milan. The food was delicious. I loved the eggplant appetizer.
Excellent ambiance, excellent food, excellent cocktails. I would definitely go back, although it is a bit pricey. More for special occasions.
The food was most Desirable and the service Impeccable. We are considering having my wife's 50th BD celebrations there
We have been looking at a number of venues for a special event later this year. After visiting and dining at Cicada we ended our search. Handsome Art Deco surroundings, delicious food and a friendly, attentive staff. An instant favorite.
I have never left a review, but I felt the need after my date. The atmosphere was great, it felt like a time machine back to the 40-50's. People were dressed up and the jazz band was great. But the food, left a lot to desire. It was very bland and did not have flavor. I normally wound't complain, but my bill was $200 plus the $30/each to get in due to the band. In total, I spent 2 hours at this place, swing music very nice but $260 was steep for food I did not enjoy. Also, I felt out of place consider me and my date were the only ones not dressed in 50's clothing; I will be back with the proper attire, but I will try something different on the menu. Great service, 3 servers for our table and someone proposed while we were there. Practice your swing dance, because most of tables got up to dance. I had a good time, with better food, I would have highly recommended it!!
Not only was Cicada visually stubbing but the service was incredible and the good was delicious. If I lived in LA I would be going back as much as possible. Amazing experience!
One waiter for the whole restaurant and it seems strange that they did NOT indicate we kept our reservation made on Open Table?! Very limited wine list and when we asked for information on two wines the bottles were brought to the table to view but no information provided. Food was above average but the entire experience was below par considering the wonderful restaurants within the same area of Los Angeles.
Came here for a birthday celebration on a special night. We had no idea we would be transcended in time. The music was amazing with Jimmy Holiday performing. Everyone really gets into the cocktail/vintage dress up. The prefix menu does have an option for vegetarians which was great for me. The overall service was good, plenty of attendees. The drinks were slow to come but they did come :)
Overall we found it to be a fun experience.
The well-preserved 30s decor lends a magical vibe to the entire experience. Many of the patrons are dressed in Old Hollywood style and they've pulled out all the stops. Plan on dressing up!! My server was friendly, patient and attentive, and the food was delicious. Overall it was worth every penny.
Food and service were great! However, the chairs felt like they cost less than my cocktail and the entire place smelt like a public bathroom. Bare-bones the building is beautiful but they could put a lot more effort into the decor.
Went for a birthday party and they were great about our large party. The best was Lamb Chops, a must try in LA.
Cicada has a wonderful Art Deco environment, and the food was delicious. A unique experience.
This was the best meal my boyfriend and I have had in quite a while, we'll definitely be back. Amazing service as well and the restaurant is beautiful!!!
worst 4 course I had.... food wasn't good from beginning to end but they did have great customer service
