Church Aperitivo Bar Ratings and Reviews
Food was OK, nothing special. Came for dinner at 9pm on a Friday and the restaurant was pretty dead, but the music was quite loud. Asked the server to spread out the meal and bring each dish separately as we were sharing and wanted to take our time eating. Both appetizers were brought out at the same time and the main was brought out before we were even halfway through the first dishes. Felt like we were really rushed and were done the meal (including dessert) within 40 mins. Asked for the bill and went elsewhere for drinks. Won't be going back.
Generally speaking the food quality service were fine. My issue was that I had booked after looking at their on line menu which looked interesting and wonderful, however, I learned upon arriving that only the Summerlicious menu was available which was nothing like the regular menu and quite restrictive. I had wished that they had both the Summerlicious menu and regular menu concurrently, but don't know if that is allowed by Summerlicious rules and regulations. From that standpoint, I was disappointed, but generally pleased. I will try it again when the Summerlicious menu is over on the 27th day of July.
We were the first ones here at 8pm (awkward) and our server wouldn't let us pick our own table and was pretty rude about it. The food was good (try the sangria cocktail) but overpriced. I had heard good things about the ambiance but was underwhelmed!
Our waiter told us immediately as we sat down that we need to be out of there by 9 for the next seating. When booking my party of 8 for a birthday, there was no mention of 2 seating times. If I had known I would have chosen to reserve the later time, as we had hoped to stay for the remainder of the evening. Just before 9 a couple girls at our table ordered drinks, only to have our waiter come over and quickly have us settle the bill. Maybe he shouldn't have taken our order if he knew we had zero time left to sit and enjoy our drink. The food was great, but unfortunately we felt the service was more on the rude side.
We booked a reso a few days in advance and when we showed up we were interrupted 6 times to be told there is a strict 2 hour time slot and we had 1hr45 mins. we were continuously interrupted mid conversation to be reminded we need to leave soon. This completely took away from our night out. At one point staff stood behind us pointing saying 'they need to leave'. This was 1hr15 mins into or dinner. I reached out to the restaurant to be put in touch with someone to discuss my experience and did not receive any contact back. This completely ruined our experience.
I always have a great experience when I go to Church! The food is delicious...especially the arancini, the meatballs, and the octopus! And the buck a shuck oysters and half price wine bottles on Thursday nights are a bonus! Our server Julia on my last visit was amazing! Definitely a good vibe at this place!
This is my second visit to this restaurant. I booked for7:30 and was told that it was a 2 hour sitting. The waiter came by every 15 minutes to ask if we were ready to order appetizers, main meal and desert. In addition to the waiter, another waitress also came by to ask the same question. Even though the food was good, we felt very rushed!!! Almost like we were being pushed out because they needed the table. After all that, we were out of there by 9:10pm-earlier than the 2 hour window and noticed that 3 other tables were empty.
Not sure if I would be going back anytime soon. The unfortunate part is that I raved about how good it was to my friends but they were not so impressed.
I booked with Church for my birthday dinner and was really satisfied.
The atmosphere was very energetic and lively and the food was great.
Service was a bit slow as it did get busier through out the night, but friendly none the less.
Also, the level of noise was a bit high early in the evening.
I would suggest that while the kitchen is still open and dinner is being served, the music level be lowered slightly as it makes it difficult to communicate with guests across the table.
Otherwise our experience was very pleasant and I would definitely suggest this location to others and will be returning myself as well.
Arrived for our 7:30 reso AT 7:30 to be told that we were 30mins late and that our table had been given away. After much fuss from the hostess she sat us only because I showed her my reso confirmation email (rude)
Waited an hour for our mains after eating our apps... Pointless excuses were given. We saw tables that had arrived after us that all had received their meals.
I ordered the sea bass which was as thin as a slice of pizza and only one very small piece. When the waitress asked how it was I commented on how little the portion was... Her response "You ordered the Cannoli for dessert so that will fill you up" um really?? Ok thanks.
We were then approached by an older man who works there and I was then told not once but twice that I eat too much due to my comment on the fish (RUDE)
I asked for the manager and he apologized profusely and comped our bill 50%.
Regardless of the apologies I will never recommend this place or be returning. Toronto is too big of a city with other excellent restaurants for me to be bothered giving this place a second chance. For future diners... You have been warned.
Dined with a group of 6. The first thing that the waitress told us when half the group had arrived was that the restaurant had a reservation after us so we had a two hour seating. The waitress went on to repeat this again when the rest of our party arrived. It was very poor taste to do this given we were dining at 8 pm and we were celebrating a friend's birthday. We felt rushed and didn't need the information repeated to us over and over. Overall the food was good but the push to get us out of there from the moment we sat down left a poor impression on our entire group and tainted the meal and evening.
Did the summer-licious menu here, overall food was good. The only thing I would liked to have seen an improvement on is the wine by the glass list, not very extensive. I ended up purchasing a bottle which was more than the meal, and not that good. That said overall really enjoyed the meal and the overall look and feel is really cool.
I found Church via OpenTable earlier on Saturday evening. It can't believe this place isn't fully booked every night. The food was excellent... as it usually is at any place that serves a proper apperitivo! We started with a fresh kale and fruit salad and a burrata. The burrata was out of this world and paired with juicy, colorful heirloom tomatoes. We then split an entree - the parpadelle with wild boar ragu. The chef brought it to our table personally, which was a lovely touch. Our desserts (nutella profiteroles and caramel pana cotta) were both delicious. We walked all the way to the Molson Ampitheatre for the concert after dinner - we were stuffed, but it was so worth it!
The restaurant was beautiful and the food was amazing. Our server was new at her job and did a very excellent job ensuring we were well taken care of. The only problem was that I had booked the reservation through opentable but when we arrived, the hostess advised that she did not have our reservation in the system. She gave us the option to dine at the bar, which wasnt acceptable to us given that it was our anniversary. We were then told that we could have a table but had to give it up by 9pm because it was reserved. We didn't have a choice but to accept- getting reservations on a Saturday night elsewhere would have been impossible. Before we had completed our main course, it was 9pm and the manager advised us that if we wanted anything else we had to move to the bar. My partner finished his last few bites and we just got the bill, not bothering to stay for coffee or dessert or another drink which we really wanted to do, but by 9pm, the bar area had become fairly crowded. It was a pretty disappointing early end to what was supposed to be a special night. Nonetheless the food was excellent, but I am not sure I would return.
Excellent place to meet up with friends, business colleagues, host business events, chic wedding receptions, family outings and enjoy the best of Queen Street West. Great service, superb wine list, and delicious fresh pasta made in house with other delightful Italian comfort foods available for the traditional diner. Every detail is attended to by excellent service staff and the owner Andrew. Warm friendly and sophisticated dining in a chic venue with stunning architectural details.
