The braised lamb shank was absolutely delicious. I am still thinking about it this morning (last night). I thought the blend of flavors with the creamy polenta, veggies and rosemary jus was perfect. The cheese plate was very good (really loved that bleu d'auvergne) and we had the deviled eggs. Nice.

The restaurant was not busy for a Tuesday night (not surprising), so I enjoyed that it wasn't overly crowded. The space is VERY modern styled and the lighting is nice. I like places that are a bit cozier but it should be a destination for the food, especially!

I enjoyed the chicken liver mousse and the steak tartare was phenomenal. The deviled eggs were interesting but a little too sweet for my taste. The atmosphere was hip to the neighborhood, real artsy industrial vibe.

This was my second visit over a two year period. I love French food. But this place just wasn't remarkable. And the service was not very enthusiastic. And the cocktails were meh. There's better out there. And I will find it!

We were here celebrating a birthday. We had the cachat and onion tart to start and they were both very flavorful. Then we had the lamb shank and the cod. The lamb shank was perfect for the unseasonably cool weather, and the cod was exceptionally delicate. We saw onion soup coming out that looked pretty good, too. The waiter recommended the capoeira, one of their house special cocktails, as aperitif, and I recommend it as well if the weather isn't too chilly.

i ALWAYS enjoy dining here. The staff is excellent. They have a confident, gracious manner, and know their food. The bartender is always helpful, and knows his wines. My guests ALWAYS enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and great, great food.

Not what it use to be.. Its still a French restaurant.. But the food quality level has dropped. A little more packaged dishes and less exceptional creations...

Made a reservation for my wife and I for our wedding anniversary this past Monday. Got to the restaurant and...it’s closed. A nearby store owner told us that Church and State is no longer open on Mondays—fair enough, but it would be great if they stopped taking Monday reservations in that case, or at least notified us after they accepted our reservation.

We walked a few blocks to Officine Brera and had a great meal there.

We were disappointed as we had expected more based on ratings. We felt rushed all meal and our cocktails were delivered AFTER we received our appetizers. We had to ask 3 times for water refills. Food was delicious but overall a disappointing experience. Despite being told it was a birthday celebration, nothing was done that indicated they were aware of this.

Had been looking forward to this dinner as I had heard wonderful things about the restaurant, and it did not disappoint. The steak tartare and onion tart were wonderful appetizers, the bouillabaisse was outstanding but the top of the heap - the French fries and garlic aioli - it's worth the trip just to have a dip in that aioli! Also enjoyed the cauliflower, but was disappointed in the steak as it lacked salt. That said, everything else made up for its' lack of flavor. Would recommend this restaurant and do not skip the fries!

We have eaten here before and always enjoyed it. Unfortunately this night both my husband and I became sick shortly after leaving the restaurant. This was difficult because we had tickets to a concert at the Disney Concert Hall. My husband was forced to miss the final 20 minutes of the concert. It may have been the oysters that we shared. I also had the mussels and was disappointed in them. It is not easy to screw up mussels, but the flavors were not good and do to getting sick, I wonder how fresh they were.

The only problem was the staff's inability to listen. The host sat other people before us because he didn't hear our name correctly. The waiter didn't want all of our food served at the same time. The waiter was very nice and apologized for the mistake. The food was very good. You will not be overwhelmed by the portions. I like the physical space.

Don’t bring your date here. Poor service and average food for $80 bucks. Should be $$ or $$ dollar signs not $. Arrived at 8:45 on a Tuesday night, no need for reservations only 8 people in restaurant. Took 25 mins to get the check. Not impressed.

Your place was recommended by family and friends. we were celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary and we insisted that the menu be French, since we were married in Paris, France.
We were not disappointed. The moule and duck was excellent. The taste was unique (in a very good way).
I must say that the servers/waiters were exceptional. They went out of their way to make you feel at home / relaxed / comfortable.
Yes.... we will return.
Already some friends are writing the name of your restaurant, they want to experience the event as well.

Terrific French cuisine at reasonable prices; the Coq au Vin is to die for. The desserts are very tasty. I've been here twice, the first time set the bar prettry high, and memory enhances experiences, yet the second visit exceeded my expectations. So, I'm very much looking forward to my next visit.

My friend and I met for a weekday lunch and we shared a gorgeous seasonal salad - if one would even call it that, it was so much more than a mere salad - a gratin of perfect mac and cheese and a bottle of a Provence rose. It was a lovely meal, the service was spot on - our server was there when we needed her and not when not, and parking is easy in the lot across the street. I would go back again and again.

Butter. Deep and Rich flavors. Nearly every dish is amazing and fits what I expect for my pallet. Also cocktails. It's a big deal haha

Steak frites, bone marrow, goat cheese, chicken liver with some beer or a cocktail and you are set.

Upon being seated, our waiter approached us too soon for our order, and then vanished. We asked another waiter to retrieve our waiter (he did). After our unremarkable meal of Winter Vegetables & Coq au Vin the bus-man cleared the table and we waited in vein for our waiter to return and finally, we again had to ask 'the other' waiter to locate ours.

The visual setting (decorations, tables, wall-hangings) was pleasing. The acoustics were just plain badur. Our dinner conversation was more like trying to communicate at a concert: shouting and reading lips.

The champagne my date ordered from the menu was not available.

Street parking was available 2 blocks away. The street was sketchy, but my car was unmolested.

Delicious and fresh oysters with tasty mignonette started our wonderful dinner. Lyonnaise salad was perfect with a warm poached egg over crisp greens and generous amount of lardons. Coq sure vin was tender and full of flavor. From the moment you enter service is expert and attentive. Love Church and State!

Wonderful bistro food, the emu included old favorites and new tastes. Mussels and fries with excellent aoli. Onion tart is cheesier than in the past - perhaps the tart and onion with less cheesy was better. Nice wine selection.

Great ambiance in the heart of the Art District. Wonderful lighting, casual setting. Had a 8:00 pm reservation but didn’t get seated until 8:30—no big deal, but the host was rude when I asked him about it at 8:15. Our server, however, was attentive and friendly, and the sommelier knew his stuff.
We were a good-sized group of 5, and had a lot of fun sharing appetizers. The oysters were outstanding, and the onion torte made me wish we’d ordered multiple. The bouillabaisse and the mac n cheese was also quite good. The mushroom tagliatelle was overly salty and had an overpowering richness. All in all, we really enjoyed our dinner there and are likely to return.

Great Valentine's Pre-Fix. We had the wine pairing as well. Excellent for the food and the wine!!!! The only part of the dinner that didn't stand out as the rest of the meal was the dessert. It was not up to the level of the food served in the previous courses. We were disappointed with the dessert.

We are new to the area and have never been to Church and State before...we will return.

Church and State hasn't lost a step in the several years since its been open. Despite several chefs in the kitchen over the years, the restaurant has lost nothing. One of the first to serve bone marrow, it is now the "go to" for the perfect dish. Snails in puff pastry continue to amaze. This trip I tried the hanger steak for the 1st time and it was as good a piece of meat as I have ever had. Extremely juicy....cooked perfect....and melted in my mouth. However, the accompanying french fries were no better than McDonald's which is the only reason not to give this 5-stars. The frazie salad with a warm poached egg on it was the perfect starter. All in all, still a super experience.
