Food was very good but very rich. Noise level inside was acceptable until they suddenly increased the volume of music, which was annoying and made conversation difficult.
Great service - our waiter was patient with our questions and had good recommendations. Food was very tasty and not as heavy as super traditional French food. Would definitely come back to try more of the menu and specials!
Definitely a great revamped menu with a new chef behind the kitchen, all four different entrees stood especially the lamb stew with the goat ricotta. Great use of vegetables in all the dishes

Our food took way too long to be prepared and the party next to us who had arrived after us had eaten and been ready to leave before we got anything other than some rabbit pâté appetizer.
Love the location in the arts district setting, highly recommend sitting outside so you can have a conversation. Inside they pack the tables close and it can get loud. This restaurant is trying too hard and takes itself too seriously. A hipster place, for sure, very pretentious, a little overpriced, and with a very limited menu. We will not return, unfortunately.

Just awful food. It should be made very clear to everyone that THIS IS NOT THE OLD CHURCH AND STATE!!! New owner, new " chef".
Horrible seasoning, boring menu. The manager was lovely, and took the (incredibly over-salted) steaks off the bill, but the food was just sad.

this revival of a downtown pioneer is worth another visit if you haven't been recently. the menu is modern bistro where simple dishes are given flawless execution. can't wait to come back.
Now this is a brilliant restaurant. One one of the best I have been to in a long time. We just returned from Barcelona, and ate in several Michillin Star restaurants. Church & State holds its own among the best. And the somellier is A+. Wow!
I ordered duck, wife ordered ribeye cap. Both were utterly tasteless- aside from duck being gamey (also tough). Seemingly identical, murky brown sauce atop both dishes. Even then wouldn't have complained but waiter made the mistake of asking. Told him mine was inedible. He apologized. Manager came over. I had to ask in all seriousness: do you actually have a chef? They took the duck off the tab. Should have prefaced this by saying we scanned the menu for a long time looking for anything that sounded good. Looking around, everyone seemed to be ordering one pasta dish or french fries. Waiter said they were out of our first choices. Evidently word was out on the beef and the duck!
Wine was good.
Wonderfully inventive food and lovely staff.
I especially love the first course avocado-quinoa starter.
Great Grand Marnier Souffle
They nickel and dime you for everything. Charged a $3 cocktail fee and a $3 "up" fee for my martini. Have never seen anything like it before. Food and service was mediocre from what I remember coming here years ago.

I ate at C&S shortly after the new owners took over and loved it. The food and cocktails were really good and the service top notch. In short, I couldn't wait to go back, which we did. The second time around, however, wasn't quite the same experience as the first. The food, while still good, seems to have dropped off. Maybe the new, and very long, specials menu is distracting the kitchen from executing the main menu. Anyway, I probably would have been back but for how the restaurant handled a situation during the meal. The waiter, who himself was very good, while pouring a beer accidentally dropped the bottle that in turn broke the full glass, sending beer and broken glass all over the table and floor. The waiter had a slight cut but luckily none of us were injured. It seemed like a situation for, at the very least, to have the manager stop by an apologize and check on everyone and something comp'd would have seemed like Service 101. But nothing. No manager. No comp. No nothing. Obviously, they didn't care but for those prices they should have cared. In fact, they kind of pushed back when we asked to have the cocktails remade for fear that broken glass may have landed in one. Bottom line is that the food is good, the atmosphere is good, but it will be awhile before we head back.
Everything was very excellent. Food was great, service was great and everyone was super friendly and warm.

The whole experience was great! Our host was very friendly and welcoming. The noise level was good! Finally, a restaurant that doesn’t make me want to use headphones! Our server was very passionate about the food which made it all the better. He was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. The food was outstanding and we loved everything we ordered. The butter was one of the best butter I have ever had. We ordered a few things from the specials, like the escabeche skewers and the blood sausage (which was surprisingly light). Overall, a very pleasant experience.

We took friends there for the first time. They enjoyed the limited menu and the overall experience. The chef briefly came out to ask how everything was. It would’ve been nice to spend a bit more time with him. It was a bit loud for them, but I think they were satisfied.
First time there since the relaunch, new menu but still delicious!
We have always loved Church and State since its original opening. The menu has changed and although the food was very good we do miss the previous menu which was more Bistro like. I love simple bistro like restaurants and now that is gone. This new menu is very limited and I assume will change over time. The food is good and we may return.
first time back under new management. We ordered the avocado and quinoa appetizer which was very unique and the presentation was amazing but as for taste it was a bit bland. The puff pastry of trout was delicious and beautiful. The caccio e pepe was also great but could have used more pepper. The hanger steak was generous and well prepared but the taste was a little off which may be due to the cut. The grand marnier soufflé desert was novel but the taste and sweetness may need a punch.
My biggest misgiving was that we started with a great waitress but right after she took our order she disappeared and while there were no major lapses in service, we ended being served by three different people which I found a bit disconcerting and unusual. Plus nobody transitioned us from one to the other as I've seen done in restaurants.
Excellent food and service. Everything dish we ordered was delicious and the service was prompt and friendly. Highlights were the smoked trout in puff pastry, anchovy tart, cacio e pepe pasta was the best we have had outside of Rome, hanger steak with bone marrow and whole sea bass were perfectly cooked and the smashed double fried potatoes were insanely good. Special fresh peach tart was a great dessert and the molten chocolate lava cake was one of the best we've ever had. Can't wait to go back to try everything on the new menu. New owners and new chef, David Feau, have succeeded in putting new life into this place and the menu.
Although the ownership and chef are new, our “favorite “ French restaurant continues to serve delicious and innovative food The servers are attentive and efficient and we enjoyed our patio location. Seating is more comfortable but please bring back your endive salad!!
If you are looking for horrible service, this is the place to be! Still really boggled by how bad the service was.
Dreadful experience - absolutey nothing like the former Church & State.
Food was served in bizarre cafeteria-like deep dishes, which made it impossible to eat using a knife & fork.

My husband and I went to Church and State after seeing a show at the Ahmanson. It was awesome! We sat outside on their lovely little patio, our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine selections and the food options. She guided to some very delicious food! We stared with some fresh French baguette and delicious butter, followed by sharing the duck and pork belly patè-delicious! We then had the most delicious Cacio e Pepe al dente pasta dish- perfection! We wanted more bread to mop up all the sauce! We shared the lamb merguez for our entree which was so flavorful and fresh. My husband worked at a French restaurant in his twenties so we had to have the fresh made to order Gran marnier soufflé. Which was also perfection. Overall a lovely and satisfying experience. We will definitely be back!

My girlfriend and I used to love the moule frites, but it was a very nice and fresh menu!

Mediocre drink selection, limited and over-priced wine choices if you only want to order by glass. Seems like the management wants to push customer to order bottles.
Baguette and butter - baguette was warm and crispy, the butter is too rich and creamy for my taste (I prefer Republique)
Tuna puff pastry - interesting concept when the waitress described it so we ordered. After trying it, the tuna paste/cream that they injected into the pastry was really FISHY! I like puff pastries in general but this dish didn’t have the surprise factor that I was looking for.
Sugar melon and beet salad - my favorite of the night. That melon was sweet!! Very refreshing for summer night.
French onion soup - a tad too sweet for my taste and the croutons that they put inside the soup was too buttery. I love the presentation of the bone marrow on top of the French onion soup.
Seabass - I typically love tangy dishes, but even this one was a bit overboard for me. Perhaps we shouldn’t have added the lemon.
