Church & State might be one of the older restaurants in the Arts District, but it’s still definitely worth your time.
Totally outstanding in every way! The food was delicious, very high quality and generous. The service was also superb. Very talented chef!
Excellent as always!
Don’t bring your date here. Poor service and average food for $80 bucks. Should be $$ or $$ dollar signs not $. Arrived at 8:45 on a Tuesday night, no need for reservations only 8 people in restaurant. Took 25 mins to get the check. Not impressed.
Your place was recommended by family and friends. we were celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary and we insisted that the menu be French, since we were married in Paris, France.
We were not disappointed. The moule and duck was excellent. The taste was unique (in a very good way).
I must say that the servers/waiters were exceptional. They went out of their way to make you feel at home / relaxed / comfortable.
Yes.... we will return.
Already some friends are writing the name of your restaurant, they want to experience the event as well.
The mussels dish was The best we've had - anywhere in the world, including France. The big problem was how long it took to get our order - way more than 30 minutes!
Excellent experience. Wonderful food and service!!
Terrific French cuisine at reasonable prices; the Coq au Vin is to die for. The desserts are very tasty. I've been here twice, the first time set the bar prettry high, and memory enhances experiences, yet the second visit exceeded my expectations. So, I'm very much looking forward to my next visit.
My friend and I met for a weekday lunch and we shared a gorgeous seasonal salad - if one would even call it that, it was so much more than a mere salad - a gratin of perfect mac and cheese and a bottle of a Provence rose. It was a lovely meal, the service was spot on - our server was there when we needed her and not when not, and parking is easy in the lot across the street. I would go back again and again.
Butter. Deep and Rich flavors. Nearly every dish is amazing and fits what I expect for my pallet. Also cocktails. It's a big deal haha
Steak frites, bone marrow, goat cheese, chicken liver with some beer or a cocktail and you are set.
We had a wonderfully delicious french dinner with a great wine. Highly recommend
Upon being seated, our waiter approached us too soon for our order, and then vanished. We asked another waiter to retrieve our waiter (he did). After our unremarkable meal of Winter Vegetables & Coq au Vin the bus-man cleared the table and we waited in vein for our waiter to return and finally, we again had to ask 'the other' waiter to locate ours.
The visual setting (decorations, tables, wall-hangings) was pleasing. The acoustics were just plain badur. Our dinner conversation was more like trying to communicate at a concert: shouting and reading lips.
The champagne my date ordered from the menu was not available.
Street parking was available 2 blocks away. The street was sketchy, but my car was unmolested.
Delicious and fresh oysters with tasty mignonette started our wonderful dinner. Lyonnaise salad was perfect with a warm poached egg over crisp greens and generous amount of lardons. Coq sure vin was tender and full of flavor. From the moment you enter service is expert and attentive. Love Church and State!
The bone marrow and snails are wonderful.
Wonderful bistro food, the emu included old favorites and new tastes. Mussels and fries with excellent aoli. Onion tart is cheesier than in the past - perhaps the tart and onion with less cheesy was better. Nice wine selection.
Great ambiance in the heart of the Art District. Wonderful lighting, casual setting. Had a 8:00 pm reservation but didn’t get seated until 8:30—no big deal, but the host was rude when I asked him about it at 8:15. Our server, however, was attentive and friendly, and the sommelier knew his stuff.
We were a good-sized group of 5, and had a lot of fun sharing appetizers. The oysters were outstanding, and the onion torte made me wish we’d ordered multiple. The bouillabaisse and the mac n cheese was also quite good. The mushroom tagliatelle was overly salty and had an overpowering richness. All in all, we really enjoyed our dinner there and are likely to return.
Service was great; food is good but limited choices.
Great. Wonderful food wonderful service and Chef came over to talk to us. Will definitely be back and recommend to others!!!!
It was a great place. The environment and the food just made everything very special.
First waitress was a bit rude.
Great Valentine's Pre-Fix. We had the wine pairing as well. Excellent for the food and the wine!!!! The only part of the dinner that didn't stand out as the rest of the meal was the dessert. It was not up to the level of the food served in the previous courses. We were disappointed with the dessert.
We are new to the area and have never been to Church and State before...we will return.
Wonderful space. Been trying to get to this restaurant for what seems years. Loved it. Feels like being in a real big city like New York. Service was great. Food was good and innovative - try the goat cheese appetizer.
Church and State hasn't lost a step in the several years since its been open. Despite several chefs in the kitchen over the years, the restaurant has lost nothing. One of the first to serve bone marrow, it is now the "go to" for the perfect dish. Snails in puff pastry continue to amaze. This trip I tried the hanger steak for the 1st time and it was as good a piece of meat as I have ever had. Extremely juicy....cooked perfect....and melted in my mouth. However, the accompanying french fries were no better than McDonald's which is the only reason not to give this 5-stars. The frazie salad with a warm poached egg on it was the perfect starter. All in all, still a super experience.
Great food and drink. It is our « go to » place!
Absolutely you must try the spiced Cod. Oh it was so good! So inventive and so many different textures and subtleties. Wow. Also try the butter even if you don't eat butter. Cocktails are also very good. And the staff is very professional and thoughtful. We can't wait to go back.
We had a great night!
What a great little gem in a part of DTLA that is making a comeback. The space inside of the old Nabisco building is retained all of the old charm with a classic style. The service and food were excellent. We highly recommend the onion tart as an appetizer to start your meal. Pairs best with a glass of red wine.
Great service and food was on point. Can’t wait to return.
As always excellent food and service. Fantastic dineLA lunch deal with a $42 bottle of wine for $24. Authentic French bistro
Visited during DineLA. Delicious. The good sized portions made this quite a decent value.
The food was excellent , nice portions and served at the wright temperature
Service was very good
Food was delicious, service was great, and the staff were all friendly and courteous. Will definitely go back.
Staff was super nice and friendly. The guys clearing the table were on top of it and delivered our food promptly. Our waitress was nice and came around often to ask if we needed anything g else. Loved the area!
Came for 2018 DineLA, Lunch Menu $25.
The French Onion Soup starter and Mary's Roasted Chicken entrée was good, however, the service was what turned me off.
Painstaking slow. In the beginning, I was greeted by a blonde female server, who quickly got my water and drink. Afterwards, she disappeared, and another redheaded female server appeared to take down our food orders. Afterwards, she disappeared as well. The male server, who greeted me at the entrance, he disappeared too! Where did they go??? Or, are you my main server??? Even them getting the check was slow, and I had to flag one of them to come by. We would've considered coffee and desserts, but with the slow service, nah!
Never disappointed! Always 5 stars. Last night I had the lobster bisque and it was perfect.
Heavenly! So flavorful and truly what lobster bisque should be. Leek, walnut and generous piece of lobster in the bisque were delicious and added to the pleasure of this excellent soup.
Kudos to the chef. Main course was a Mediterranean Sea Bass, tender, moist and also delicious and the braised leek complimented the fish. My apple tart desert had a crust that I'm still thinking about this morning. I opened with the vodka/ thyme cocktail which was a refreshing and wonderful use of the thyme and my server chose a Chablis for me that paired with my meal to perfection. Thank you for a lovely and memorable meal. I tell all my friends about Church and State and hold all the business meals I can there, in addition to my personal outings.
love it !!! dinela menu was terrific !! and the food is consistent there
YUMMY every time
We walked to Church and State from the Lost Spirits Distillery (a must!). At first, we thought we might be late for our 8PM reservation, and had called to push it back. But, the tour ended earlier than anticipated, and we wound up at the restaurant right at 8. The hostess was wonderfully accommodating, even though the restaurant was packed. There had been a commercial shoot there earlier, we learned, and they were slammed trying to catch up. It took awhile to get water, bread, our cocktails, and to place our orders. I give a "fair" rating to service for these reasons alone - otherwise, the waiter was friendly and helpful. They just seemed overwhelmed. We ate off the DineLA menu, and everything from the pork belly on lentils, to my steak frites was terrific. We would definitely go back.
The service was truly horrendous. The waitress seemed very flustered. Forgot to bring our appetizers and never asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks during our meal. Never checked in to see if we needed anything. We were all disappointed.
Nice place. The food was very good. The service - friendly but not attentive - drinks took a long time to get to the table and spaced out by at least 10 minutes from the first to the last. Waitress was at times hard to find and not very knowledgeable about the cocktails. Shouldn't be this way at this place. The Maitre D was very friendly.
Crowded because of a Hollywood shoot outside and dineLA, but really nice people and terrific food. We can’t wait to go again!
Wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. Food was prepared and served well. Worth the drive and time if you want something a bit more special than the normal evening for dinner. Even that would work great. I recommend this to visitors to DTLA as we were.
