Wonderful bistro food, the emu included old favorites and new tastes. Mussels and fries with excellent aoli. Onion tart is cheesier than in the past - perhaps the tart and onion with less cheesy was better. Nice wine selection.
Service was great; food is good but limited choices.
Great. Wonderful food wonderful service and Chef came over to talk to us. Will definitely be back and recommend to others!!!!
It was a great place. The environment and the food just made everything very special.
First waitress was a bit rude.
Great Valentine's Pre-Fix. We had the wine pairing as well. Excellent for the food and the wine!!!! The only part of the dinner that didn't stand out as the rest of the meal was the dessert. It was not up to the level of the food served in the previous courses. We were disappointed with the dessert.
We are new to the area and have never been to Church and State before...we will return.
Wonderful space. Been trying to get to this restaurant for what seems years. Loved it. Feels like being in a real big city like New York. Service was great. Food was good and innovative - try the goat cheese appetizer.
Church and State hasn't lost a step in the several years since its been open. Despite several chefs in the kitchen over the years, the restaurant has lost nothing. One of the first to serve bone marrow, it is now the "go to" for the perfect dish. Snails in puff pastry continue to amaze. This trip I tried the hanger steak for the 1st time and it was as good a piece of meat as I have ever had. Extremely juicy....cooked perfect....and melted in my mouth. However, the accompanying french fries were no better than McDonald's which is the only reason not to give this 5-stars. The frazie salad with a warm poached egg on it was the perfect starter. All in all, still a super experience.
Great food and drink. It is our « go to » place!
Absolutely you must try the spiced Cod. Oh it was so good! So inventive and so many different textures and subtleties. Wow. Also try the butter even if you don't eat butter. Cocktails are also very good. And the staff is very professional and thoughtful. We can't wait to go back.
We had a great night!
What a great little gem in a part of DTLA that is making a comeback. The space inside of the old Nabisco building is retained all of the old charm with a classic style. The service and food were excellent. We highly recommend the onion tart as an appetizer to start your meal. Pairs best with a glass of red wine.
Great service and food was on point. Can’t wait to return.
As always excellent food and service. Fantastic dineLA lunch deal with a $42 bottle of wine for $24. Authentic French bistro
Visited during DineLA. Delicious. The good sized portions made this quite a decent value.
The food was excellent , nice portions and served at the wright temperature
Service was very good
Food was delicious, service was great, and the staff were all friendly and courteous. Will definitely go back.
Staff was super nice and friendly. The guys clearing the table were on top of it and delivered our food promptly. Our waitress was nice and came around often to ask if we needed anything g else. Loved the area!
Came for 2018 DineLA, Lunch Menu $25.
The French Onion Soup starter and Mary's Roasted Chicken entrée was good, however, the service was what turned me off.
Painstaking slow. In the beginning, I was greeted by a blonde female server, who quickly got my water and drink. Afterwards, she disappeared, and another redheaded female server appeared to take down our food orders. Afterwards, she disappeared as well. The male server, who greeted me at the entrance, he disappeared too! Where did they go??? Or, are you my main server??? Even them getting the check was slow, and I had to flag one of them to come by. We would've considered coffee and desserts, but with the slow service, nah!
Never disappointed! Always 5 stars. Last night I had the lobster bisque and it was perfect.
Heavenly! So flavorful and truly what lobster bisque should be. Leek, walnut and generous piece of lobster in the bisque were delicious and added to the pleasure of this excellent soup.
Kudos to the chef. Main course was a Mediterranean Sea Bass, tender, moist and also delicious and the braised leek complimented the fish. My apple tart desert had a crust that I'm still thinking about this morning. I opened with the vodka/ thyme cocktail which was a refreshing and wonderful use of the thyme and my server chose a Chablis for me that paired with my meal to perfection. Thank you for a lovely and memorable meal. I tell all my friends about Church and State and hold all the business meals I can there, in addition to my personal outings.
love it !!! dinela menu was terrific !! and the food is consistent there
YUMMY every time
We walked to Church and State from the Lost Spirits Distillery (a must!). At first, we thought we might be late for our 8PM reservation, and had called to push it back. But, the tour ended earlier than anticipated, and we wound up at the restaurant right at 8. The hostess was wonderfully accommodating, even though the restaurant was packed. There had been a commercial shoot there earlier, we learned, and they were slammed trying to catch up. It took awhile to get water, bread, our cocktails, and to place our orders. I give a "fair" rating to service for these reasons alone - otherwise, the waiter was friendly and helpful. They just seemed overwhelmed. We ate off the DineLA menu, and everything from the pork belly on lentils, to my steak frites was terrific. We would definitely go back.
The service was truly horrendous. The waitress seemed very flustered. Forgot to bring our appetizers and never asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks during our meal. Never checked in to see if we needed anything. We were all disappointed.
Nice place. The food was very good. The service - friendly but not attentive - drinks took a long time to get to the table and spaced out by at least 10 minutes from the first to the last. Waitress was at times hard to find and not very knowledgeable about the cocktails. Shouldn't be this way at this place. The Maitre D was very friendly.
Crowded because of a Hollywood shoot outside and dineLA, but really nice people and terrific food. We can’t wait to go again!
Wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. Food was prepared and served well. Worth the drive and time if you want something a bit more special than the normal evening for dinner. Even that would work great. I recommend this to visitors to DTLA as we were.
I hadn't been to Church & State for maybe 2 years. But I can't forget the taste of the Chicken Liver Mousse because it is so well done. When we went on Saturday night - the Chicken Liver Mousse tasted exactly as I had remembered it. Which is why I rated the food as outstanding. It's not outstanding like some destination restaurant where the food is done as a show stopping art form. No - this is French Bistro cooking done expertly. Perfectly executed steak frites. A baguette warm from the oven. A small but really well chosen wine list. And a great setting. It's food that fuels a good life.
The service was amazing! I loved this place so much. It was the perfect date night experience. The environment was fantastic(great music and table spacing). Overall it was great.
I liked the vibe of the restaurant but the service was mediocre and the food was just okay. The menu was full of classic French dishes which should be easily executed but my coq au vin lacked depth of flavor and my date’s pasta was undercooked and lacked flavor. Both dishes needed salt which was not offered at the table. I know this restaurant has been a favorite in the Arts District but I’m afraid the hype has allowed the staff to slack off a little bit.
