Church & Main - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
This is an attractive and well-appointed bar & restaurant. Next time, we'll ask to eat at the bar. The dining room is small and even though we were there early (6p) many of the tables were reserved for later times leaving less than desirable tables still available. Not a great way to start out. The draught beer selection is good as well as the list of rosé by-the-glass choices. The flatbread's sauce fell flat. The octopus salad was outstanding. Truly. Delicious. AND the octopus was oh-so-tender. Wonderful. Our waiter was good, hovered a little. Other wait/hospitality staff hovered to clear plates before we were finished. So, feeling rushed is not a good way to end the visit. Front-of-the-house staff ... PLEASE do not clear plates until Everyone at the table is finished. THANKS.
My only complaint is that the portion size on the special was really small. The other guests with me ordered off the menu and had very generous portions. Although very good, I would have liked more. I will take that into consideration next time we dine with you! Everything was fabulous from the appetizers, drinks through to dessert! Thank you!
We reserved a 12 top for 4:30 for my post wedding dinner on OpenTable. They were set up and ready when we walked in. The drinks were great, the food was excellent. Everyone got their food at around the same time. They politely answered questions that our special snowflakes had about allergies. All in all, I would say a success!
The decor is beautiful. The front has a nice bar section and the back has larger tables with darker lighting. Our meal:
Lamb lollipops: they were okay. Not enough flavor. Meat tasted weird like it has been frozen for a long time.
Burrata: also a weird texture. It wasn't like other burrata's I've had. Some parts were still soft and creamy, other parts were very hard. The salad that came with it was dressed with oil and vinegar(?) it was very bland. Mushrooms left an odd after taste. They were more like pickles. The tomatoes were not ripe.
Rabbit gnocchi: really delicious. Hint of sweetness and heat. Best part of the meal.
While visiting UVM with our daughter, we returned for a 2nd time to Church & Main because the 1st visit (in March) was so good! Our server was helpful, knowledgeable, and efficient. Our meals were outstanding. The calamari appetizer was especially tasty! When we next visit UVM, a visit to Church & Main will be in order. Thank you!
This was my first visit to this restaurant. We were visiting Vermont for a wedding and stayed overnight in Burlington. The restaurant has nice outdoor seating and we had a nice experience on a very pleasant evening. The menu was very good - most in our party had seafood and the reviews were very good. I would highly recommend this restaurant to others.
We were in town for the marathon, so I expected town to be packed. Because we had a dog with us, we requested seating outside, as close to the edge of the seating area if possible. They were VERY accommodating and even gave the dog a few pets hello. The food was solidly good and everyone seemed happy. I'd certainly go back.
Service was somewhat slow. Food was fair, at best. Waiter understated salad sizes so we didn't share one, as we generally do. Wife ordered scallops on a bed of polenta. The scallops were OK but the polenta was overly seasoned. The quantity of the scallops was quite small even though the dish was one of the most expensive on the menu. Accompanying the dish were 2 bacon-wrapped dates. The bacon on both pieces was burned beyond edible on one side; the side served face down as though being purposely hidden. They were replaced. I wanted cioppino but they only had it in a small plate serving. I asked if they could make up a large plate. The waiter checked with the kitchen and was told OK. I asked about pricing and he glibly said "Maybe $40" (vs $20 for the small plate). I said OK not really imaging that the price would double, making it the most expensive dish, by far, on the menu. To my surprise, that's exactly what they did (my bad and lesson learned). The dish had lots of seafood nicely cooked but the flavor was unlike any other cioppino I've ever had (and not in a good way). In short, it was overly hot and spicy. Not unbearable, but unpleasant. We won't be back.
Their menu was filled with various options. My husband opted to share 4 small plates and a Waldorf Salad. Then we had desserts - the pecan tart and the flourless chocolate cake. Everything was delicious! As for service, it was fantastic. Our waitress was just a couple minutes late bringing my drink to me and she ended up giving it to me on the house. I actually forgot I even ordered it! Overall, our experience was wonderful and would done there again.
We dined at Church & Main to celebrate mother's day, a birthday and a retirement all at once! We were greeted with champagne, shared a number of wonderful appetizers and we were all very impressed with our entrees. We will definitely be back to Church & Main!
The food was delicious. We ate outside. The waitress was not very friendly with her customers more like she was annoyed on being there, she did with reluctance ask the Chef to see if he could change the heat of the meal as it was suppose to be cook from scratch. The restaurant did make the adjustments necessary and the food was delicious. The downside is that they charge $28 for a pasta plate. Being on Church street there are at least 6 or 7 other Restaurants that will give you a better bang for you money. I would go back but hopefully the pricing will be adjusted not my first pick.
Really nice ambiance but the food just doesn't wow and the service was only mediocre. They did immediately replace a dish we sent back (something I have only done once before in my life) with some else and just charged us for the one. The foraged mushrooms were almost inedible they were so overwhelmed with seasonings. You couldn't even taste the mushrooms. The lobster and crab cake we substituted was really good and the best thing we ate that night.
We had a fine dinner before a show at the theatre across the street, so the location couldn't have been more convenient. It happened to be restaurant week and a 4-course meal was only $40; a great bargain. We asked for a quieter table and it was provided and remained quiet even once the bar was packed. The staff made a number of serving mistakes (bringing the plates out of order, wrong dish), but that was quickly corrected. The wine list isn't very deep (you could call it shallow), and they were out of the wine we selected; another boo-boo. Still, I recommend it. We had no problem getting a reservation, despite only 4 days notice.
A night at the Flynn should begin with pleasant and relaxing dinner closer to the event. Church and Main delivers exactly that. It is all there; a welcoming setting, attentive staff with helpful personality and some friendly chatting, excellent food, and service. Pre-7:30pm showtime is accommodated and if necesssary, includes a gentle reminder that if you want a delicious dessert, you should think about it before it is too late. Hats off to Manager Daniel for offering such a gem.
About half our dishes were great (Burrata appetizer, waldorf salad), the others were very mediocre (scallops, seasonal ravioli), which is concerning for the price you're paying here. The service was ok, with a few hiccups--they were out of the wine we ordered, and they brought the wrong dish and then had to rush order the correct one which came out overcooked. I'd maybe go back for a cocktail or happy hour appetizer, but not an entire meal.
A great find, small but cozy and the food was great. Fried foods use rice flour so it's a great gluten free option to visit. I had the calamari and it was delicious! Service was beyond expectation, timing was great as we did not wait long. I recommend reservations!
My husband raved about the oysters' sauce and I was equally happy with my standard ... green salad. I had the pork which I enjoyed but did not love, while he had the stacked ravioli. He raved about the sauce for this dish, too. Great bread and wonderfully tasty butter (Vermont?). Service was superior.
My boyfriend and I are not from the area and went for Valentine's Day. We received great service from both the management and our server, especially regarding my food allergy concerns. Some of the food was really good, like the calamari. However, some of it was just okay. Although we enjoyed ourselves overall, we felt it was a little overpriced when we factored in how we felt about the food.
