Chocolate the Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was my first time to Chocolate even though I live here! We went during Santa Cruz "Restaurant Week" specifically to experience a restaurant that we'd never been to in town. The Restaurants participating provide Pre Fixe meals for a reasonable price. The meals were just beautifully presented and the flavors were exotic and oh so yummy! Instead of chatting about what we did earlier in the day, we chatted entirely about the food and how amazing it was. The service was unobtrusive but "spot on" with refills and plate removal. Our server was knowledgeable , engaging and obviously loved her job. We so enjoyed sitting outside to eat and felt as though it was Paris along the Champs -Elysees!
We went for restaurant week where there were 3 courses for $25. Portions were ample, food was nicely prepared and very tasty. Service was good, too. Since it was a lovely, warm night we were able to sit outdoors and have a drink and dinner.
I have also had drinks there several other times where we sat outside on a warm afternoon. Very pleasant.
Dining at Chocolate during Restaurant Week was a fabulous experience! Everyone working there was so kind and helpful. My friend and I both felt like we were being pampered. Of course, the food was amazing! I highly recommend eating at this restaurant for a delicious meal, excellent service, a lovely calm environment, and one of the sweetest owners in town... David!
This is a favorite restaurant and we have been eating here for years.
The service was great.
The disappointment was in that we reserved an outside table for five people. We reserved it a day beforehand with a note that we wanted to sit outside. When we called, we were told that we could sit outside and that to make a note in the reservation.
When we arrived, there were no outside tables available for this special occasion with out of town guests.
So...it was a total waste of time calling and making reservations.
Probably not bring friends here again for anything special.
Lovely! We had never been to this area of Santa Cruz, and thought the restaurant looked wonderful. Great wine, eclectic dishes, fresh salads, and the desserts were to die for. Our server was attentive and swift, and we also enjoyed the outdoor seating. Will definitely be back here if we come into town again. After eating, we walked up and down the main drag, looking at all the shops. Great experience!
I'm a semi-regular customer. My favorites include the Polenta Plate (incredible), the pasta rosettes with marinara or artichoke cream sauce (I ask for 1/2 and 1/2), the organic baby green salad (very fresh and tasty), and the shitake mushroom soup. I'm fussy about marinara sauce. Chocolate's marinara is rich and delicious. They also carry my favorite red wine - Cinnabar's Mercury Rising. I'm always too full to order desert but they look fantastic.
Ambiance is lovely, inside and on the garden patio. This is not a place where you can rush through a meal. This is a place to take your time and enjoy your food with good company.
Went for dinner a few nights ago. The cheese pots are delicious! I had the Chicken Mole for dinner and it was perfect! The chicken was very moist. The dessert - well you have to have dessert at a restaurant called Chocolate right? I got the Chocolate cream pie - and it was super yummy! Highly recommend!
We were excited to try this restaurant, I mean, it's called Chocolate after all! Sadly, it was disappointing all around. Service was terrible. We waited at our table, almost to the point of letting the hostess know we wanted to place our order, but instead continued to patiently wait for a server to come by. As a side note, we were there for a very early dinner, and the restaurant was not very crowded. We did appreciate that the hostess was friendly and polite. Finally our server came over, no introduction or smile, and quickly asked if we were ready to place our order. Our daughter's meal was incorrect and it was another long wait to get the item she ordered. We were finished eating, and our daughter was still waiting for her food. To be fair, they volunteered to take that entree off our check. We had to ask twice for water, and the person who finally brought it was not our server. Food was mediocre, but the hot chocolate was very good. Desserts were disappointing to be honest, the flavors were just not great in our opinion. After the long delays, ironically, our server informed us he was leaving and asked us to close out our check right away. We did and still left a generous tip, because we understand people are working to make a living, but we don't need to ever return there.
Had a change in schedule which necessitated relocation of our family celebration of a graduation to Chocolate. The staff was very accommodating and very quickly were able to put together several tables in a private room to make it a memorable occasion for all of us. Food was great, tasty and fresh. Service was great. Thanks to all the staff.
Good food marred only by so-so service. Limited kids menu of pasta, grilled cheese or PB&J (which ended up being marinara sauce and peanut butter?!). Sandwich was supposed to be removed from bill (wasn't), had to ask twice for more water.
I enjoyed a birthday lunch here with my family. I love their poblano mole dish! It is not as authentic as I can make myself. Nevertheless, it is complex and delicious! I also loved their mousse chocolate cake...so creamy and light! Their hot chocolate drinks are also great. I enjoyed the "Frieda". Beware that these almost feel like dessert! So have at the end of your meal. Only bummer was that they did not have any birthday candles, even though we mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. I would not hesitate to recommend Chocolate!
Who knew you could put chocolate in so many different things with so many different tastes! While they didn't have the salmon on the menu (for a slow food place this isn't surprising when they had a salmon special) both what my wife and I ordered was amazing! Definitely worth the experience and do get hot chocolate to start and a desert to finish up with.
If you love chocolate like us, this is worth the trip. Gluten free options abound so the combination is very hard to find. The only issue is that there was one server for the whole restaurant. Service was slow and he had to be reminded of several items. Don't know if someone called in sick or it's always like this, but I'd give it one more try on a less busy time than Mother's Day dinner.
Everything was outstanding. The food was creative (swordfish, coconut/citrus with cheese potato pie). Something for everyone fish, meat, salads, veggie. Large variety of decadent hot chocolates. Don't miss out on the coconut/chocolate cheesecake. Delicious!
We were bummed. We came here on our anniversary based on recommendations from locals, and this place just didn't deliver a great experience. We sat outside, which was a nice setting except that there were flies all over the place. The menu looked good and we ordered chicken mole and the pork and while they were both pretty good, we weren't wowed by them. The mole sauce was too sweet and gloppy, and the pork that was cooked like carnitas had some off flavors. We were given a side of lettuce (strange) and a cheese-polenta cake that was dry and crumbly and not very good at all. We ordered a Caesar salad that was just ok and the Artichoke cheese pot where the cheese was not creamy, and was really oily and coming apart. Dessert was the only winning dish when we got the chocolate pot and chocolate gelato, but it was tough getting there. The service was good, we had no complaints there, but we won;t be coming back. Too bad.
Not knowing what to expect, all three of us were pleasantly surprised when we met for a good friend's birthday dinner. Well appointed and authentically decorated, Chocolate began by being a feast for the eyes! We decided to make our dinner "family style" by sharing several appetizers and entrees. The house made sausage and chicken parmigiana were the hits of the evening.
We decided to try this restaurant after reading several Yelp reviews. The indoor ambience is interesting and decor is very eclectic. I was a little nervous as my daughter has several food allergies and I was concerned they may not be able to accommodate. I was wrong. There were great options. She enjoyed the small fresh baked gluten free bread loaf , portabello mushroom , pasta rosette and chocolate mousse cake. We ended up ordering another loaf of bread for the table as it was light and airy. The chicken pot pie slice ( interesting way to see be a slice with gravy on the side) and Caesar salad was delish! We also ordered chicken parmagian and sausage dinner plate which were good too. My husband really loved the dark chocolate sinful cake a la mode. Last but not least our server Carolina was awesome! She seems to run the show there. She takes care of so many tables on her own. She is well versed and will suggest from the menu. I would recommend this restaurant for both lunch, dinner or just dessert. The truffle variety was amazing. We may swing by to try some this week. There is a very extensive dessert, beverage and coffee menu.
Service was great. Seated immediately. Orders taken promptly. Food served promptly. Portions excellent. I had the chocolate sausage dinner, which was unique and quite tasty. The chocolate deserts offered were numerous....we had the chocolate cupcake, the chocolate lover's experience and the extra dark chocolate gelato......all were just wonderful. The wine selection, though small, had a good balance and contained several local selections. Would dine there again.
I have loved this restaurant for a long time. It's a little on the pricey side for me to come in on a very regular basis, although in the winter I'll come just for their amazing hot chocolate menu! On special occasions I always love the chocolate BBQ free range pork or the chicken molé, but last night my boyfriend and sister both got the pasta rosettes (which I can't have because I'm gluten free) and they looked amazing. Everything here is delicious, I love the ambiance and decor, and I love that they are so gluten free friendly as well as organic and local with so many ingredients. I don't mean to draw too much attention to one of my favorites for fear they may be overrun, but they deserve the stellar review. Staff are always amazing, too!
