Went there for Valentine’s Day and were completely ignored for the first 20 minutes. We ordered the Valentine’s Day special which included appetizer, dinner and dessert and champagne with each. While still enjoying our appetizer and champagne, which were both good, the waitress brought the main course and set it on the side because we were only half done with our appetizer and told me to “drink up” my champagne because she needed to bring the champagne that went with my dinner. Dinner was already kind of cold so we started eating it even though we weren’t ready. We got duck that was completely over cooked and charred. Our friend got pork that was also over cooked and tasted a bit like chewing on rope. We have eaten at Chocolate a handful of times and the food and service has been good. For whatever reason for this dinner special it was really terrible and definitely not worth the price.

I love chocolate. It has been a go to for my fiance and I. The food is always amazing and we love the wine selection. So of course we decided to dine there for Valentine's day. Everything was great with the exception of the service. It wasn't necessarily horrible but it wasn't great either. I felt very much rushed through my dinner which I didn't appreciate. I get that Valentine's day gets busy but I made this reservation a month in advance. My fiance and i dont get to do this very often, it is very much a treat for us. I hope next time our server will be more gracious and allow us to enjoy our meal instead of rushing us through it.

We had a lot of fun! The only thing we found disappointing is that our server kept telling us that our table was reserved at 8 even though our reservation was at 6:45, even though there was nothing we could do about the speed of service. I feel like we were rushed out of the restaurant even though the service was rather slow.

Valentine's Day special: $95 per couple, including glasses of 3 kinds of bubbly. Fine antipasto, half a roast duck a la orange, fine roast brussels sprouts, and wild rice. One might think Chocolat is a dessert place. It didn't disappoint - with a selection of brown treats.

Outstanding meal and presentation. We came for a special Valentines Day serving and had one of the best dinners we have eaten in Santa Cruz. Thanks Chocolates! Well done!

* When you make your reservation thru OpenTable for a Saturday night, it's for the small outdoor seating area only, not inside. Fortunately, the hostess was able to get us a table inside.
This is more of cafe style food, not fine dining. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but drowned in a thick sweet sauce that was difficult to escape. The Chicken Pot Pie was dry (they advise you of this on the menu). Our bottle of pinot grigio was below average quality.
The chocolate desserts and gelato were fantastic. Would go back for dessert.

Service was slow and food was average. Not my best experience. We ate in the bar area and it was cluttered. The best dish was the sausage but presentation was poor.

My husband and I came here for the first time on 1/13/18; we really enjoyed our experience and the meal - especially the dessert! I love the dessert menu, I had the Lena hot chocolate and we shared 2 different gelatos. The occasion was really just to have a special weekend for ourselves, in anticipation of our first baby, due to arrive in a few months!

Service was good, food was awesome. We started with the warm Roasted Garlic & Cheese Pot. Delicious! Then we moved on to the Chicken Mole & the Spicy Chocolate Bbq Roast Pork. Flavors were rich and bold. Only regret, we were too full for desert. We'll be back.

The food at Chocolate is always good - it's a relatively short bistro-style menu for lunch or dinner, and everything on it is good. They also have daily specials.
Where they really shine is, as you might expect from the name, their hot chocolates (7 or 8 varieties) and their desserts - all excellent and delectable, with something for every taste. Fun décor. And if the weather is nice, their outdoor dining area is great for al fresco eating and people watching, with radiant heaters to stretch the outdoor dining season a bit.
It's not the cheapest restaurant in town, but the quality is excellent. We've never been disappointed.

Chocolate is a unique local restaurant with excellent food and service. My wife chose it for her birthday dinner this year and it is one of our favorite spots for special occasions. Be sure to try a hot chocolate drink.

This is a good place to go for date night. I went before a movie that started at 8:30, arrived at Chocolate at 7:15 and I was seated right away. Appetizer arrived around 7:30 and our meal around 7:45. All the food was good, ambience was nice.

Everything about the restaurant is great. We were six people and each had a different main course. A few appetizers were shared. Our meals ran the gamut from salads to salmon, chicken pot pie and pasta. Every dish was delicious and tastes were passed around. The desserts, which not all of us were able to eat after the generous portions of food, were outstanding. And to top it off, we took home some of the outstanding truffles.

Terrible food all the time. Ok, salads and bread are good. I'd give them 4 stars if they'd ditch the menu and solely serve dessert and hot chocolate. Definitely go for that, nothing else!!

Best hot chocolate I've had on the West Coast; salmon special was moist & tasty; sausage plate was good tho the peppers & onions were on the sweet side. Shares restrooms with the great bookstore next door (your dining companion may take awhile to return).

This was my first time to Chocolate even though I live here! We went during Santa Cruz "Restaurant Week" specifically to experience a restaurant that we'd never been to in town. The Restaurants participating provide Pre Fixe meals for a reasonable price. The meals were just beautifully presented and the flavors were exotic and oh so yummy! Instead of chatting about what we did earlier in the day, we chatted entirely about the food and how amazing it was. The service was unobtrusive but "spot on" with refills and plate removal. Our server was knowledgeable , engaging and obviously loved her job. We so enjoyed sitting outside to eat and felt as though it was Paris along the Champs -Elysees!

We went for restaurant week where there were 3 courses for $25. Portions were ample, food was nicely prepared and very tasty. Service was good, too. Since it was a lovely, warm night we were able to sit outdoors and have a drink and dinner.
I have also had drinks there several other times where we sat outside on a warm afternoon. Very pleasant.

3 of us went for restaurant week 2017. THIS WAS THE BEST ONE. All 3 choices were spectacular! Love that they also paired wine, no other place even made recommendations. Love this place and I learned they are great for dinner, not just desert!

Dining at Chocolate during Restaurant Week was a fabulous experience! Everyone working there was so kind and helpful. My friend and I both felt like we were being pampered. Of course, the food was amazing! I highly recommend eating at this restaurant for a delicious meal, excellent service, a lovely calm environment, and one of the sweetest owners in town... David!
