Chocolate the Restaurant
The food at Chocolate is outstanding! The service is fast and friendly. It is in a quaint, little spot in the heart of downtown where character and entertainment abound.
Food was so so. I wouldn't go out of my way. Service was good. Ambiance good. Just not a great please for a foodie.
Excellent Salmon dish, Salad and Chocolate Sin dessert!
This is a Santa Cruz Gem. Excellent service, delicious food, very comfortable. Love this place.
I came here for the dessert which was amazing as was the Fuego hot chocolate. However, dinner was very expensive for the amount of food received and was just okay. $20 for chicken parmagian with a side of basically lettuce, $15 for a salmon salad, one piece of salmon on a bed of spinach. Additionally, I thought they had a bar with chocolate drinks, however, they only serve beer and wine and not even any chocolate flavorings. They have a wonderful pomegranate wine, however, you can only receive a small sample with the adult misbehavior dessert, you can't purchase it separately.
My husband and I went to Chocolate for Burger Week. The burger was unique in that it had pepper jelly and a pork patty. The veggie sandwich was fresh and came with a large side salad. The service was quick for a weekday meal, and the waitress was attentive. We have been to Chocolate multiple times, and it is always a positive experience. We only wished we had more time for dessert!
Ambiance is lovely; warm, eclectic and romantic. Food is not great, and certainly overpriced if you are going to be splurging on going out to eat for dinner. My salmon salad was essentially a pile of spinach with a cold overly-smoked salmon on top and some pistachios. My boyfriends quiche was better but not extra-ordinary. The two things I love about this restaurant are the ambiance; love the irregular decor and cozy vibe, and the HOT CHOCOLATE, which is to die for! I will not be eating dinner here again, but will certainly stop by for dessert.
From pictures, it appeared as though the outdoor seating would have multiple heaters, but when we got there, I could only see one (fairly small) in the middle of the patio. It was very cold out as there was a storm the day prior. We asked to sit closer to the fire because I had made a reservation but the hostess told us it was for reservation only. I don't think she understood what I was trying to explain but I told her I booked online and had a reservation. No one came out to check on us in terms of our seating arrangements and no one tried to accommodate us. The food didn't taste very food and wasn't worth the price - the only thing I would go back for is the dessert. The place is called Chocolate, so that's obviously their specialty.
FOR THE NEXT CUSTOMER - If sitting outside when it's cold, make sure you request a seat next to the fire or bring extra coats! It's not comfortable without.
Excellent dinner and amazing hot chocolate
The women at the front desk were rude. I heard one was just beginning her first night, yet she was rude and abrupt with is.
The people were nice, atmosphere warm and calm. The food was just OK, but also average for Santa Cruz to be honest. Good ingredients and lots of gluten free options which was much appreciated.
Delicious food, nice staff, absolutely amazing desserts
So many really good gluten-free options! Thank you!!
Chocolate never disappoints. The food is always delicious, the service good and the atmosphere is mellow.
Nice find! The food was paleo friendly and very tasty
We all enjoyed our food so much. The service was perfect. Were there when we needed them, but not annoying. will go there again.
While everyone was very pleasant, our food took a long time to come out, especially dessert, and we weren't checked on for the most part. The roasted chicken pie was mostly potatoes, the dark chocolate orange BBQed pork on turnip puree was good, the flourless chocolate cake was more gluten free (made w/almond flour) than flourless & not nery good. The pasta rosettes were average. The hot chocolate Sofia & hazelnut chocolate milk were excellent. The restaurant is quite small and decor very eclectic - on the dark side. It did not appeal to our 20 something kids at all.
I chose this restaurant because it had lots of gluten-free options for my girlfriend. It turned out I enjoyed the gluten-free food as well it was really tasty was definitely impressed with the night and selections for her. The gluten free bread loaf was amazing and I normally don't care for gf breads. Going back on our next trip the Santa Cruz
Great food, great service, great chocolate!
Had dinner following a movie. We both had the chicken mole which was very good. Service was excellent and our food came quickly. Will return.
Love this restaurant. Good is delish, especially if you like chocolate. Unique choices, not the same old dishes other restaurants have. Good location right on Pacific Ave. near parking.
Pork was dry. Sesame Salad dressing was weird.wont go back. Sorry.
We enjoyed dinner on their patio, watching people walking along Pacific Avenue. The chicken pie was wonderful and the pulled pork appetizer was just spicy enough. A dessert of chocolate mud pie capped the meal with just enough sweetness. The spinach & mushroom salad was disappointing. The dish had no imagination and the mushroom strips were tough and hard to cut. With such delightful desserts it would be a wonderful place after an evening on the town.
Food is delicious, staff is excellent, and ambience can't be beat.
Surprisingly diverse dinner menu, not just chocolate hot and cold. We visited during Santa Cruz Restaurant week - don’t know if this affected the menu. My mahi-mahi was perfectly cooked with an amazing sauce and roasted vegetables. Dessert was a creative and delicious cake infused w rose essence, candied orange in the cream filling and, of course, chocolate glaze. My husband’s chicken soup was flavorful, filled with chunks of chicken and vegetables - a meal in a bowl. His brillat savarin cheese was perfection and beautifully served. Paired with a glass of Pinot noir, sitting out on the patio on a fair night, we had a wonderful evening.
Restaurant week meal:
The green beans were not fresh in this meal, and wasn't crazy about the salad dressing, but had a nice piece of Mahi Mahi, and rich desserts for restaurant week. Eggplant appetizer was too rich/salty.
My usual favorite on the menu is the mushroom soup. Good bread and dipping vinegar's.
We came here for the first time during Restaurant Week last year and were quite impressed. We have been back several times since. So we came here again this year for Restaurant Week because the food is so interesting and delicious. And if you like chocolate desserts, this is your place, any time of the year!
Food was good, desserts were great! Friendly service and warm and fun vibe!
I would have upped the score but our waitress aWas rather hopeless. She kept the water coming but didn’t turn in our order then got it wrong. Her supervisor kept rescuing things and we weren’t in a hurry, so it all worked out. The pasta rosettes are the best thing on the menu that isn’t chocolate.
Chocolate is a go to during Santa Cruz Restaurant Week. The menu has great offerings at an affordable price and in the past it has been our favorite place for Restaurant Week. That did not happen this year. Unfortunately they ran out of one of the dishes by 6:30, though they were quick to offer a substitute dish. Twice they brought me the wrong order, and though I corrected it for the appetizer, I didn't correct the dessert since it took a long time to get my replacement appetizer. The mud pie was melted and runny, and we were charged for 3 glasses of wine and we only had 2. There were not enough servers to support the amount of tables that were seated.
Sat on the patio and it was delightful, nice ambiance on the street but there is a hedge that provides a nice buffer from the sidewalk. Excellent downtown venue.
A small quaint restaurant. Limited menu and wine list. I had the mole chicken that was good and had a nice corn bread side. My partner had the chicken pot pie and he wasn’t crazy about it, especially because it had a lot of big potato chunks in it.
Lovely lunch(pork with chocolate BBQ sauce) yum!
Great server pleasant and knowledgeable about menu.
Had Fuego hot chocolate for dessert..great!
Will def be back soon.
knowledgeable waiter, delicious food, and extensive hot cocoa menu! Super cute outdoor seating with heat lamps make for a comfy and romantic atmosphere
We had an appetizer, salad and dessert. All were excellent and the service was great.
Our first time at the Chocolate - it was an underwhelming experience. To begin with, the table was not very clean. It took more than 30 minutes for our food to arrive (had a main dish and a dessert) ; during that time not once our server stopped by to offer an explanation for the delay. The food was mediocre and the triple chocolate cake did not taste very fresh.
This is a nice place to eat outside in downtown Santa Cruz while still feeling private. The Mole is a must have
Chocolate Restaurant is an outstanding dining experience. Friendly staff, casual dining with a flare, fresh local ingredients, creative menu. Everything was delish from the main entree to coffee and dessert.
ok.too dark. presentation meh. tasty, friendly, ok.
