Chinois on Main Ratings and Reviews
We were seated promptly for our reserved time.
Our server came over quickly and asked about beverages.
He was attentive though out the meal checking frequently.
We placed our order and received our meals in adequate time.
The food was delicious and freshly cooked.
The ambiance here is a little stark and cold, however,
the quality of the food makes up for that.
Chinois has been on Main for quite a few years now, and it never disappoints. When I am in the mood for a great crispy duck and fried spinach, I make a bee line to Chinois. This night they also had lobster egg rolls as a special appetizer and they were quite tasty!!
Food was very good, service was ok and the place was dated. The service could have been better. I spoke the the manager on the way our and he could have been nicer. The desserts were fabulous!! The very best chocolate cake I think I've ever had and I'm picky. Overall I'd go again and this was my 6th maybe 7th visit. I like that it is fairly casual.
Everything about this place was fantastic. The waiter was so attentive as well as the rest of the wait staff. Food was all fabulous! And not the run of the mill menu. We were given both an appetizer and desert for no reason! That made it even more special but even without those I highly recommend this place.
Chinois is one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Monica. We love the deep fried catfish, stir fry vegetables and the fried rice. The place always has a great vibe. The decor is gorgeous and creative. Peruse their wine list, you can spend $45 or $4,500 on a bottle of wine. The food always comes out fresh and delicious. Parking can be an issue so we choose to UBER it when we are staying in town. This is a must go to restaurant if you love great Chinese food.
Chinois on Main never disappoints. The food is always delicious. We celebrated my bday and brought friends who had never eaten there. Its a wonderful place to share dishes because of its family style portions and the food is prepared with special spices and ingredients that makes it different from others. I always highly recommend this restaurant to others looking for great eats in Santa Monica. It can get loud but we always enjoy the fact that everyone else loves it as much as we do.
I was very disappointed in the very bland Chinois Chicken Salad. It just tasted of pepper and for a signature dish was very disappointing . I found most of the dishes to be lacking in flavor and unlike any of the other Wolfgang Puck restaurants that I have been to. I normally love Wolfgang Puck's flavor profiles ; however here the chef seemed to be phoning it in.
We tried an appetizer special recommended by our waiter...foie gras with pineapple that was delicious but at $50 the waiter should also have mentioned the price! Then we had warm, curried oysters that were plump and juicy, two each and then the main course of Cantonese duck...a different waiter showed up for this order and told us we had to have the fried rice - which was a mistake. The rice was gluey, studded with unidentifiable lumps of matter and basically inedible. The duck however was perfectly cooked and came with a variation on a plum sauce that looked a lot like cranberry sauce...we finished it off and couldn't eat another thing. Servings are generous, ambiance is noisy but buzzy and if there weren't so many other good restaurants around, we'd probably go back...but any high concept eatery that serves such gluggy rice can't expect repeat visits...
Chinois on Main is frozen in time and not in a good way. The decor is old and dingy in addition to just feeling dated. The staff seems tired of their shtick. The food was oversalted and gloppy. The duck pancakes arrived very quickly but lukewarm and with way too much hoisin sauce slopped on top. Even the beer wasn't cold enough. I saw someone at another table get theirs in a chilled glass but I guess my server was interested in taking that extra step. They did give us a free dessert for our anniversary which was kind. But overall, it was a big disappointment.
Very good as usual. Perhaps the menu shows some aging and should be updated. The same treatment given to the Catfish dish should be tried on a different, less mud-tasting fish. Duck great but they should serve it with the usual chinese pancakes and the proper sauce like any great Pecking Duck.
