The food was very good, as always. The waiter was very attentive and patient, despite close soon. Amazing cocktail and food. Good for large parties because portions are HUGE!
Everything was fabulous as always!
Perfect as always could eat there nightly
Have been a fan for years. The restaurant, menu and staff are timeless!
Great Mother’s Day brunch!!
Been going to Chinois for years for special occasions and can't get enough of their Shanghai Lobster. Very relaxing atmosphere with a wonderful staff.
Every meal prepared as if in competition for the best of its kind...….and this restaurant wins, every bite!
Still a champion Santa Monica restaurant after all these years. The food, wine section and desserts are amazing. This is still my “go to” place for very special occasions. It’s super high quality but still California casual.
One of the original Wolfgang Puck creations from the 80's. Nothing has changed in 34 years and the place is still vibrant and successful . Just goes to show that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Love this restaurant!!
Always dependable as the best! Great food, great service. Always the finest wonderful flavors.
We were excited about this Wolfgang Puck restaurant but after our first appetizer we began to be disappointed. The restaurant décor is a little outdated and the food just not exciting. Could be Wolfgang is living on his past reputation. The Szechuan pancakes were bland and needed salt. We also are not fans of the vegetable stir fired rice as it was a little on the heavy side and again lacked seasoning. The braised pork shoulder was the best item we ordered. A highlight was the fantastic wait staff which was the best part of our visit.
The main reason I am only giving this restaurant is because of the attitude of the wait staff. They seemed disinterested in serving my group. Our reservation was for 7:30 pm on Friday night and we felt that they were standing around in a group trying to hustle us out. I will say that the food was very good especially their salads.
Best in town!
The food is for sure the most creative in town.
Best dishes have been there for many years and their special are always on point.
Highly recommend the chicken salad, duck fried rice, beef entrée, fried catfish and lobster.
Their cocktails are also very creative and the wine list has some of the best french bordeaux with some of the best vintages 2009 and 2010.
Nice desert as well on the creative side.
It was so strange from the moment we arrived. The service was just odd, from the hostess, to the waiter, through to the bussers. No one was rude, it was just a strange experience, as people seemed a little vacant.
The restaurant is too cramped. Every table was too close, which meant the staff couldn't pass without rubbing up against everyone.
The waiter came to take our order but we didn't have an menus. When he came back to take or order, three of the four items we were ordering had sold out (how can you sell out of vegetables?) which would have been fine if he had told us upfront, but we had to quickly select different items.
The food, was a little bland. The calimare tasted frozen, the duck pancakes were actual sweet pancakes (not the traditional Chinese pancakes) the Szechuan beef was tasteless and lacked any spice. The saving dish was Braised Pork Shoulder which was lovely but pretty much tasted like the same brown sauces that was on every dish.
There is definitely an older crowd in this place and they seem to be enjoying it. Many of them seemed to be regulars but based on the food, service and ambiance I sadly wont be be returning.
Fantastic food & service. Seasonal soft shell crab followed by Wolfgang’s classic chicken salad, curry lobster (absolutely yummy) & haricot verts.
Great food and service could not have been better! They also make a perfect dirty martini.
Great food, great service! I have been to this restaurant numerous times over the years and it never disappoints! So great to see the familiar faces. It seems like we get the same thing every visit, but this time we stepped out a little with some of the great specials of the day. Delicious.
I was really surprised by the poor service at a Wolfgang Puck restaurant. When we finished our drinks, the glasses were whisked away and no one asked whether we wanted a second drink until we had finished our entrees. The pancakes for the Chinese duck came 15 minutes after the duck, without an apology. Even on a Saturday night, there were empty tables, although the noise level was deafening. The patrons were largely senior citizens. Most of our dishes were good to very good, but not great.
Always fantastic. One of LA's great food temples. Incredibly consistent, yet inventive. The staff is experienced and professional at all times. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and fun. The flavors are addictive!
Very disappointed with the experience. It’s an open kitchen set up which is not a good idea for Chinese food when there isn’t a good ventilation for all of the wok cooking. Our table was in the middle of the restaurant under 2 birds statues with candles on top of each that didn’t serve any purpose except making us very unfortable, when tried to stand up going to the bathroom (hitting our heads)!!!
Food was very overpriced for a non-creative Chinese food (although it’s advertised as a blend of Chinese and French fusion, To be able to charge $25 for a chicken salad...) which all tasted the same even though we ordered different items so we share.
I won’t go back there and won’t recommend to any of my friends. There are much better choices in Santa Monica.
After all the years dining there, it’s great that they still deliver a great dinning experience. Great Bar tender, server and kitchen staff. Sit at the counter in front of the kitchen for a great time! Good is still top notch!! Shanghai Lobster is fantastic!!
Food and service always the best
Amazing experience all around, as usual. Will continue coming again and again.
Fabulous as always!
Dinner was outstanding.
Service was impeccable.
Chinese cuisine French style or French cuisine Chinese style? Perhaps the most creative, and delicious fusion menu I have experienced. This is not the usual Chinese restaurant or French restaurant. This is unique and spectacular...delicious...hard to pick just one or two items. Fortunately they service generous portions family style. Plenty to go around. Shortribs! Amazing. Fell off the bone. No knife needed. Duck...cooked to perfection with crisp skin and just about all fat rendered. Is that a touch I ginger I tasted? I like fried rice but have never had duck fried rice which was a virtual explosion of flavors. Crabcakes with a prawn on top. It would be hard to single out a favorite and that's a good thing. My only disappointment was that by the time the dessert menu came around I had no room left for another bite. And the desserts looked wonderful. I have been to Chinois many times over the years and the quality of the food and preparation has never faltered. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the wonderful wait staff. The dining room is very well staffed in numbers and as a result there is a lot of personal attention without being intrusive.
We were looking for the right venue for a night out with friends. Chinois has a round table which is perfect for a party of six. It’s always the best for conversation. The food was absolutely amazing. I had always wanted to try the sizzling catfish. This was the perfect amount and it was incredible. The chicken salad was especially delicious that night as well as the Szechuan pancakes. It’s always the perfect vibe. Highly recommend this restaurant and always appreciate the knowledgeable and welcoming staff. Jason at the door always sets the right tone.
I had never been to Chinois on Main before and was taking my best friend for her birthday. I was so impressed that even before we got there, I was called to be reminded of my reservation. When we arrived we were greeted by Jason as well as our waiter, and both men were so gracious as well as attentive. My friend and I were thrilled with our food choices and there is more than enough to share plates. Everything we ordered was fresh and the best thing I think on the menu is the crispy spinach. I would come back again and again. Of course, since it was my friend's birthday, the highlight of the evening was the surprise dessert they brought us. That was totally unexpected and really delicious. Thank you Wolfgang for creating such a wonderful experience.
This restaurant is far away from my residence. Of late, Inonlyntomto meet someone who lives closer. However, he food was exemplary the last time that I intend To take friends equally distant from Santa Monica to experience a memorable gustatory and fun experience. chinoisnis quite different form other Puck undertaking in decor and menu. It remains an underaporediated star in hisndirmament.
Chinois continues to be one of the best restaurants around. The food and non-assuming yet totally attentive service are second to none. Dress as you wish. Be somebody. Or, be just a plain soul there for the first time and you'll be given the same great food and wonderful service. Whenever in LA treat yourself to this fabulous dining experience.
We loved our dinner - especially the Calamari and shrimp salad.
And the waiters were great and lots of fun! We can't wait to come back.
Good and service was very accommodating
Though I usually gravitate to new and trendy, I love Chinois, which has been the same for 30 years. The food is just delicious ! The chicken salad, crab cakes, Szechuan beef, lobster, whole catfish. Fabulous ! Fantastic service. Great desserts
Chinois was and has always been amazing. Great food. Great staff. Jason and Bella are lovely people as are everyone else who works there. Been getting my chinois fix everytime we have the craving for over 30 years now!
Food was as good as I remember. The whole catfish just wonderful. Mu shu pork very creative. Would go back soon.
Food very good. Service had an off night. Valet parking understaffed and slow. Server friendly but inattentive. Had to ask twice for second menu after one of us came in before the other (waiting for valet) and got only one menu, and had to ask for second set of chopsticks. Server brought wrong bottle of wine (not what we'd ordered), and it took quite a while for right bottle to come. With wine not at table, had to ask twice to get glasses refilled.
crowded, noisy, overpriced. Chinois on Main has not changed with the times. The menu hasn't changed in 15 years, and I'd wager the clientele is exactly the same. The food was just so-so, and not worth the price. The only saving grace was a reasonably good wine list. Other options in the area that would be a better choice for less money.
