Chinois on Main Ratings and Reviews
My friend wanted to come here for Dine LA. She had been in the past and remembered it as being one of the best known restaurants on the Westside. Unfortunately, the only part of the meal that impressed us was an item that was NOT on the Dine LA menu, which was the lobster eggrolls. Needless to say, we were a bit let down after anticipating a better foodie experience.
This was DineLA restaurant week, so some of the service errors are acceptable as most of the patrons needed a lot of hand-holding. That said, the service was way below normal for Chinois. Our appetizers came out at different times, same with the main courses. Water not filled unless asked. Really poor. That said, the food was excellent as always. The DineLA menu was good, but we added sides to get full. Overall, we had a slightly frustrating but wonderful time. If you haven't been, go!
Good but not as good as I remember it to be. The chicken salad which we always order was a bit bland and we couldn't taste the lobster in the lobster egg rolls. When we mentioned this to the waiter who was extremely nice, he said we should have sent it back but, alas, too late.
We returned after a magical dining experience 25 years ago and were disappointed. We actually had a great time because of the people we were with. The food was uneven. The Calamari salad was delicious but my wife had the gluten free option which was tasteless. The BBQ ribs were judged by all as the weakest. The famous Fried Catfish was liked by half and found not good by the other two. The Scallops were very good. The desserts were best - three creme Brûlées, and a sorbet. Overall, we found the atmosphere a bit like a visit to an old folks home, mixed with some plastic surgery mistakes. Service so-so. Value for money it was not.
My wife and I had a fantastic dinner Saturday evening. Delicious duck crepes to start, followed by the swordfish special that was unbelievable of which we shared along with half orders of the vegetarian rice and the haricot beans in black bean sauce. Everything was great. The dining room was beautifully decorated in a festive holiday spirit.
We were seated promptly for our reserved time.
Our server came over quickly and asked about beverages.
He was attentive though out the meal checking frequently.
We placed our order and received our meals in adequate time.
The food was delicious and freshly cooked.
The ambiance here is a little stark and cold, however,
the quality of the food makes up for that.
Chinois has been on Main for quite a few years now, and it never disappoints. When I am in the mood for a great crispy duck and fried spinach, I make a bee line to Chinois. This night they also had lobster egg rolls as a special appetizer and they were quite tasty!!
Food was very good, service was ok and the place was dated. The service could have been better. I spoke the the manager on the way our and he could have been nicer. The desserts were fabulous!! The very best chocolate cake I think I've ever had and I'm picky. Overall I'd go again and this was my 6th maybe 7th visit. I like that it is fairly casual.
Everything about this place was fantastic. The waiter was so attentive as well as the rest of the wait staff. Food was all fabulous! And not the run of the mill menu. We were given both an appetizer and desert for no reason! That made it even more special but even without those I highly recommend this place.
Chinois is one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Monica. We love the deep fried catfish, stir fry vegetables and the fried rice. The place always has a great vibe. The decor is gorgeous and creative. Peruse their wine list, you can spend $45 or $4,500 on a bottle of wine. The food always comes out fresh and delicious. Parking can be an issue so we choose to UBER it when we are staying in town. This is a must go to restaurant if you love great Chinese food.
