They don’t honor Open table reservation. We came on time and showed restaurant our reservation. But we were told to wait and had to wait for about one hour. We had to sign up on the waiting sheet to get a table. There was another group of people who “claim” to have 6pm reservation but showed nothing. The restaurant honored them stead of us.
This is our second time here. We previously came and had the special banquet with a group of friends. We enjoyed the banquet very much. This time we ordered the Peking duck, the honey bitter melon and the pork shu mai — it was just the two of us this time. We found the duck dry and not very tasty — certainly not as we remembered it. The honey bitter melon was just ok. The pork shu mai was excellent — almost like a xia long bao — as the inside was juicy and flavorful. This dinner was not inexpensive and we were disappointed with the taste. Cantonese restaurants do a much better Peking duck with the buns — the ones here came was thin pancakes as a wrap.

Was very tasty & authentic, waiter was professional to introduce the History of Peking duck. They offered good service in a very crowded & noisy space .
After we've paid the bill, the hostess came over to our table & telling us to leave because there were still many people waiting to get in..... which we thought was rude!
They seem to have no respect for the reservation system. This is the second time I didn’t use the walk-in list. I don’t see the point. People who were walk-ins were seated before us while we waited twenty minutes after our reservation time (for which we arrived five minutes early), with a 97 year old woman and a person in a cast in tow. One table that was seated, didn’t even have their full party present at the time they were seated. I make reservations because if I’m traveling with my 97 year old neighbor, I need to not stand around in a noisy entryway where she cannot have a conversation. All four-tops were full when we arrived. Why bother with open table?
That said, the food is exceptional. The spicy dumplings are amazing. Order the onion pancakes to make use of all of the spicy sauce in the bottom of the dumpling bowl. Cumin lamb is also a favorite. Peking Duck was nothing special. Save your money and time and order off the fantastic menu.
For some reason, every time I go in there, a waiter asks me where I’m visiting from, as though he’s never seen non-Asian people before—let alone a local who’s been the the restaurant twice a month for the last year. And this is the impression the arrival treatment felt—you will wait while we seat all who come. No reservation held tables. If the restaurant doesn’t mean to have this sort of interface with the public, and it was the fault of the woman handling the two lists, then they need to handle their staffing situation. Because this evening was enough for me to stop coming and stop recommending this restaurant to people.
Food is very good. We ordered Peking duck (without booking it) and Dong Po pork, among others. It is one of the few places in SF and in US where you can have a wide spectrum of Chinese cuisine of different regions, not only Sichuan (as you would have guessed from its name). The air conditioning was not working, but I guess it was just mulfuntioning the day we were there. Definitely will recommend it to my friends.
This is our first time to have dinner at Chili House. We decided to try it since our usual go-to restaurant on Geary Street has a dismal health score. I made reservations thru Open Table for our group of 11, and we got seated right away. The Peking Duck was delicious, and the tableside carving and presentation was amazing. We liked the Potstickers, Pumpkin with Salty Egg Yolk, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Mongolian Beef, Broccoli Beef, Orange Chicken, House Chow Mein, House Fried Rice, and Lamb Chops. However, the Beef Stuffed Pancakes didn't have much flavor, and we did not like their Hot and Sour Soup at all. Service was friendly. A bit pricey, and 18% gratuity was included. The place gets really crowded, but clean. Overall, we enjoyed it and will be back to try other dishes.
Just ate here tonight with a good friend. We were both so impressed with both the food and the service. We asked the maitre'd/manager to choose the dishes for us since it was our first time there. Had the xiao long bao (yum!), this bun with beef and broth inside (also yum!), ma pop tofu and these other beef stir fry-like dish (yum and yum!). I can't wait to come back and try other dishes and perhaps for dim sum, too.
The food was good. The service was abysmal. It took us an hour and a half, almost 2 hours to eat and be served lunch even with a reservation. People were served and left the restaurant who arrived after us.Two thoughts occur to me. One, we were older women and were served last or there were only 4 service staff that were in the restaurant and the restaurant was short servers.
We had a large party including several people with dietary restrictions who wanted to order individually. The waiter took away our menus and tried to order a variety of food for us, which surprised and stressed out many people in the party who were not comfortable with the "family style" concept. The waiter should let the table decide whether they want to order individually or as a family, and not take our menus away without permission.
Chili House is a pretty traditional Chinese style restaurant. I came from Beijing, so I could say that their Peking roasted duck is really authentic and delicious. They also supply Sichuan food and Guangdong food, maybe my next time trial. The ambiance is very suitable for traditional Chinese family party. The only drawback is the waiter was very slow. They looked very busy, but not very positive to help. Maybe this is because it is a holiday when I came. In summary, I will recommend this restaurant and suggest you try the northern Chinese entrees first.
Even though the food overall wasn't bad. But I see why people leaving comments on Yelp with health concerns. We first got plates that looked wet. I realized it was not water but chili oil after wiping it with napkin (leaving the napkin with yellowish red marks). Later, we also found hair in the leftover appetizer we took back home. Not sure if I would want to go back again.
