About Chicago Firehouse Restaurant

In January 2000, The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant opened and became an integral part of the changing South Loop neighborhood. On December 10, 2014, a devastating fire started at the restaurant. Thankfully, all employees and firefighters were safe. Matthew O’Malley immediately vowed to rebuild.
Over the course of two years, the restaurant was redesigned and rebuilt. The redesign includes a larger bar area, the addition of a solarium with floor to ceiling windows for increased seating, enhanced private dine rooms and a beautiful 2nd floor veranda. Guests will now enter through the Firehouse’s original entrance on 14th Street.

I went after work to meet a few of my girlfriends for holiday dinner and drinks, and we were pleased to find there was live music in the Bar! We had to stay in there for a cocktail (or three), because the ambiance was hard to leave. We were then seated by our host (who had the cutest velvet boots), and took us to our table. The Dining room was a wonderful experience and our server George really took great care of us girls. We shared a seafood tower and a punch bowl, and I got the filet, which was cooked perfectly. It might be the punch talking, but I think I'm in love.

I live in the neighborhood, and I took my mom here for a nice dinner. We were not disappointed, great food, incredible service team, and my mom enjoyed the wine list. They had a band in the Bar, which was cool. I need to come back soon just to enjoy that bar sometime.

I am very reluctantly writing this review. We have tried direct contact with the restaurant and have been put off multiple times. Someone will call us back. The manager is out and will call. We are done trying to understand. Dinner turned into a 3 hour event. Waiter was distracted. Sat with dirty dishes between courses for at least ten if not twenty minutes. Steak was served not even warm. Given the choice of 15 to 20 minutes for a new steak while holding up the table or reheat the steak that was not cooked properly. Waiter had warned there was a kitchen issue. Sides sat on the table cooling as our guests waited. Gave up and asked for take home bags. Got home and the steak and potatoes had not been packed up. All this for the low price (after removing the steak) of $446. We did not want money. We wanted a nice birthday dinner. I was embarrassed that we chose Firehouse that we had really promoted.

Big fans in the past. Super disappointed in the evening and follow up. Guess they are busy enough that one complaint does not matter.

Restaurant owners have contacted us. Just a bad night. We will work through this together. Willing to give them another chance 12/ 14

Had the rib eye steak; melted in my mouth. The creamed spinach and Brussels sprouts were good also. The prices were higher than I expected since everything is ala carte. Would be nice to at least include a salad with you order. The rolls could be improved; bland. It's nice to have a variety of bread/rolls .

My wife and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary here. I chose this place because of the location and the building, beautifully redecorated. We were greeted and seated immediately and received excellent service. They serve our favorite: lobster bisque, plus my wife's favorite wine, and even one or two beers I hadn't tried before. The only long wait was to correct my dessert order, but I can't complain since it was complimentary (I let Open Table know the occasion). Our only complaints are the prices and the lack of a restroom on the first floor.

New renovation is very nice. However we were seated in the central section at a 4-top table where the only light was a small oil lamp on the table. There were ceiling recessed fixtures but the manager refused to turn them on -- even with a dimmer. We sat and ate in the dark.

We had brunch here which was fine. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was very good. My reason for marking it down a bit was for the extra call you get on the phone AFTER you make a reservation on Open Table. Chicago Firehouse is not the only restaurant that does this, but I find it terribly annoying. You make the reservation, then get a voicemail asking you to call back and confirm the reservation. The entire reason I use Open Table is to NOT make a phone call, let alone have a reservation require two steps, BOTH digital and phone. There were only 3 tables in the entire restaurant booked for brunch... I think they could have taken a chance that we were going to show up without the additional harassment.

My wife and I came here for our 16 th anniversary, we had a wonderful time. Our waiter was excellent and the Chef made an adjustment to the seafood platter for us. The history of the building is incredible, which adds to the experience.

The restaurant is super clean and organized. The bar is very large. The staff is pretty friendly...The hostess was good; not exceptional but the waiter and busboy were in deed outstanding. They really wanted to make sure we liked everything. A glass of wine at the bar was $11. Maybe that's normal these days; I'm not sure. They sat us in a very nice, quiet booth and we started with a salad. My wife thought her salad was "brown". I couldn't tell but she sent it back. I had the wilted spinach salad and it was great. I loved the egg, the dressing, the candied nuts on it - It was perfect for me. And plentiful. Then I had the skirt steak and fries ($24). I really enjoyed it. The cooked it just right and it was quite tasty and tender. The fries were good too. The wife had a cheeseburger ($17). She said it was excellent. I also had a coke which came in a little glass bottle - very much a treat bc I'm sure the soda in those glass bottles have more fizz and more something that just makes it taste great. Loved it. No dessert - we were ubering off to the theatre right after. Some of the steaks here are $40 and up so be prepared to spend some money. You are treated extremely well. The waiters know you are spending some money so they really take the time and effort to make it worth it for you. I will come here again and think you will be glad if you come here as well.

We went there for my birthday and it was an amazing night! The food was definitely amazing! Our favorite waiter Philip even went out of his way to give me a piece of cake and ice cream for my birthday! He wasn't our waiter but remembered us from other visits and was so wonderful that we will ask for him always!

Classic Chicago Steakhouse. We enjoyed out post Hamilton outing and would recommend it. Our service was excellent - we were promptly seated and our waiter was attentive. The lobster bisque was excellent and the rest of the family enjoyed the wedge salads and French onion soup. The steaks (ribeye and filet)were prepared perfectly and the sides were good especially the creamed spinach. Lastly we enjoyed the Key Line pie and the Gelato Sundae.

Thanksgiving buffet was good overall but could have been better. Turkey and other fish/meat options, appetizers, and sides were fine. Dessert table was a little sparse--the obligatory pumpkin pie and a few pastries. Maybe because we did the late seating and they ran low or because they put us upstairs in what seemed to be an overflow room.

The ambience of the Chicago Firehouse was wonderful. Our waiter was pretty good too. But, everything else was disappointing. We went for their Thanksgiving Dinner Buffet. The food looked picked over (what was left), it was lukewarm, didn't look inviting at all and was way overpriced! Sixty-five dollars for hard rolls, bland sides, and two macaroons for a table of five. We were hoping for a special Thanksgiving - maybe start a new tradition. The quality of the meal is a big deal on Thanksgiving. We were beyond disappointed and would not recommend Chicago Firehouse.

We dined here for Thanksgiving and It was both a positive and negative experience. I assumed since it was Thanksgiving that our reservation time would likely not be on time. I was pleased that it was no more than 15 minutes late. The restaurant is very beautiful and the food itself was good however nothing was hot just moderately warm. It was a buffet and the placement of the food and the people entering the restaurant and waiting on their tables was a issue. It made it difficult to get to the buffet and back to your table with an obstacle course of people and children.

We’ve dined here a dozen times but this was a very negative experience due to a poor waiter with an attitude . Food was excellent but here’s an example of inattentive service. Our appetizer was served with the main entree rather than the first course. When asked why, the waiter became defensive and blamed us for not specifying the order of service. Worse, he said “I’m not a mind reader” His attitude throughout the meal was negative. The image of the firehouse has been tarnished in our minds. Even the reaction of the manager when we reported the experience was tepid with a shrug of the shoulder saying “he’s one of our best waiters”. Customer service has slipped badly.

Things started well. The crab cakes (though small) were tasty although could have been warmer. The 'lamb lollipops' appetizer was terrific. The lobster bisque served in a puff pastry was terrific.

But them came the dinner. I ordered the 14 ounce NY strip and it is the worst I have ever had at a nice restaurant. It was tough and took upper body strength to cut through! Needless to say it wasn't very good. The mashed potatoes were bland and almost cold. The creamed spinach was served lukewarm.

My dining mates liked their desserts but I'd given up. The server was helpful but was MIA too often. Normally I think myself a pretty giving reviewer but I will not be returning here.

Three items (strip steak, avocado toast and one other dish ?) from the menu were not available! The wait staff should have announced that before asking for our lunch selections. Additionally, the restaurant , which is cavernous, was decidedly cold during that hour.

Loved the old restaurant before the fire. Was eager to go back after the re-build. I will try it again sometime but this time was a bit underwhelmed. The scallops which I always ordered in the past were very "fishy" and I just found the restaurant to be more "bar-like" in atmosphere rather than fine dining; however the prices did not translate. Nothing stays the same in life, I guess.

There was construction nearby so there was infernal beeping and loud diesel motors. The steak tartare was just piles of raw meat in large chunks that were sinuey and chewey.

My wife and I celebrate our wedding anniversary at the Firehouse because we had our wedding dinner there 7 years ago. We used to go there often before it burned down. When it came back we were thrilled! We made a reservation and saw our waiter David it was a great reunion. This time we went and had a server by the name of George who basically ignored us! We don't drink and that's were he makes his money . There were a lot of company dinners going on and that's where his attention went to. The dinner was "okay" the side dishes were horrible...we were very disappointed!
