Good food for the location (I've spent a lot of time in France). Live music was enjoyable. Service was not good. We made a reservation an when we came they did not have a decent table even though there were at least 6 unoccupied tables in the two rooms that I could see. The waitress kept forgetting us. Bought bread twice and forgot the butter twice. Did not keep eye scanning our table to see when we needed something, although she was always near. The chef was positioned at the bar while we were there, so I don't know who was running the kitchen.
The food was good, and the portions perfect. I a diabetic, but had the chocolate raspberry mousse and when I fearfully took my blood sugar that night, it was perfect.
My wife loved the place, except for the seating and server, but everyone else was polite. If she wants to go back on our next regular trip we will go, but I will specify what table I want and be insistent about the level of service I expect at a quality restaurant.
This was the second time dining at Chez Vincent. The first time was not a positive experience so we decided to give it another chance. First the restaurant was very warm and humid - you don't want to be sweating while you are dining at nice restaurant. Second, the service was poor. The waiter was inexperienced and very overwhelmed by a hustling crowd. We went thru 3 wine selections (which they were out of) and 30 mins after we sat down I had my first glass of wine (which was way too long and I ended up not drinking the wine). The food was very good so they get good marks there. I would also say Hannibals, bar next door, was excellent and bartenders were very good.
We dine at Chez Vincent annually on our trip down from Jacksonville. 12 straight years. We find the ambiance a wonderful compliment to the food. Vincent roams the room from time to time which gives you a sense of caring on his part. We highly recommend if your in the area.
The food was outstanding as usual. I think they were catering a party next door, which looked like it took a lot of their servers. Although, Chez Vincent’s is a fine dining slower service environment; they were a lot slower than normal. Our service was a nice friendly young man; but, if I was guessing he probably was normally a host and not a server. He was a tad forgetful. But, took responsibility when he forgot and tried to fix it. Mixed up salad order, forgot to bring more bread, etc. But, the food was and always has been excellent and makes you forget the other things.
Chez Vincent is consistently delightful. The food is excellent. The service is great. Good value for you money. The best thing I like about it is that there is no loud musics and there are no TVs! Conveniently located around the corner from Hannibal Square. The mushroom soup is unbelievably yummy and the escargot have just the right amount of garlic. The steaks and lamb are tender and prepared to order.
Never disappoints. No complaints about the service. Very attentive! It is our go to restaurant! We ordered the specials for the evening. The blackened grouper and scallop in a Grand Marnier sauce was very flavorful. However, my husband thought the best meal at the table was the lamb shank in a port wine reduction sauce. The Creme brûlée is my favorite!
I wish I could afford to eat here every week. What a great menu. The prix fix offering was delicious, especially the lamb and the garçon's recommendation on the bordeaux spot on. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly and the chef really just wonderful when he he offered us some complimentary white port sherry. We'll be back soon!
Mussels were especially wonderful. Mushroom soup was so salty as to be inedible. Chicken crepe was also much too salty. Salmon was wonderful. Quiet for late lunch when there were only a few diners. Expect it could get quite loud at dinner and in the evening given all the hard surfaces.
Our Christmas Day dinner was not acceptable at Chez Vincent. Our family waited over 10 minutes for someone to seat us. In those 10 minutes, no one even acknowledged our presence. When seated, the chairs at our table had wobbly legs and the seats were wobbly as well. It appeared that no one knew who was assigned to the table. When drinks and food were brought the waiters did not know if the food was for our table or another table...very confused wait staff. The appetizers that we ordered were acceptable...foie gras, frogs legs, and escargot. The dressing for the salads was pure mayonnaise. It appeared that the chef was not really skilled in cooking French cuisine. The main courses were bland. Having eaten coq au vin several times at other restaurants both nationally and internationally, this meal was bitter and the chicken was dried out. The venison was actually an extremely small piece of meat that had a gamey flavor and was immersed in a dark, beefy, unappetizing gravy. Not quite what we had in mind when we selected this restaurant for a nice Christmas Day dinner. The desserts were not on par. The chocolate soufflé had collapsed and lacked flavor. The servers were so busy moving around tables and chairs and resetting the tables for the next day that our service was inadequate. We also noticed soiled linens piled up on the floor adjacent to the dining room near a badly stained chair seat. Not at all the environment for a fine dining restaurant. Our family always enjoys dining in our local area and rarely has a meal out that is not satisfactory. We considered not completing this survey as we believe if you cannot say something positive, say nothing at all. However, that being said, Chez Vincent needs to understand that the meal served to us was not only unsatisfactory but that the overall experience was actually unpleasant.
My family of four had reservations on Christmas for dinner. When we walked in we were ignored for several minutes until being acknowledged and finally seated.
We waited another five minutes before being acknowledged by a waiter that was extremely unpolished and used the excuse of being very busy.
Service was sporadic and overly too casual. Drinks and then food came out disjointed as 2 of us were served then a third and finally 5 minutes later the last plate arrived.
The food was good but extremely “over sauced” and the deserts were horrible. I should have known after ordering the vanilla crepe and creme brûlée and it arriving within 3 minutes that if was put together haphazardly.
This restaurant operates with a level of arrogance that thinks it is much better than reality. After several tries, we can honestly say we are done over paying and being under served.
Terrible experience,we had driven 4 hours to have dinner with our daughter on Christmas Eve,waiter(no hostess or manager present) tried to tell us that we had no reservation. Fortunately with Open Table we had proof. Then they tried to seat us in their loud low end bar/restaurant Hannibal claiming that it was the same as the quiet French restaurant that we had booked . When we protested the waiter proceeded to argue with us. When we pointed out that we had reservations he said that lots of people had reservations. Never been to a restaurant where the staff was so rude and the experience so unwelcoming.
Very disappointed, food was mediocre and not worth the expensive price tab. Main courses appeared to have been either sitting under a heat lamp or reheated. My partner had the steak and it was chewy and I had the trout and it had very little taste, could have been any fish. Tarte tatin dessert was nothing like the real thing and neither was the Creme brûlée. Ambiance was nice but overall it wasn’t worth the money and I wouldn’t go back.
Husband and I were celebrating our 10yr anniversary. I wanted to try somewhere different, and I read it was rated most romantic. We arrived and the restaurant was empty - that should’ve given it away. Inside the restaurant is very simple, plain. Our server was nice but nothing overboard. Because it was so slow that night the staff was talking at the bar - less than 20 ft from our table. The food was average AT BEST. Hannibal Square is charming but spend your money elsewhere!
I have always loved going to Hannibals/Chez Vincent's, but I am more drawn toward the Hannibals side, especially when there is live music. I was lucky enough to come on a vintage night. Zoot suits and flapper dresses and a man singing (crooning?) like he's Frank Sinatra. Fantastic ambiance, delicious food and wine, our waitress was exceptionally pleasant but not pushy. She gave us the right amount of time to extend our visit and enjoy the music as long as we could.
I was very disappointed, having heard good things about this local favorite from friends. I thought I would try it out during the extended days of Magical Dining Month. The food was very below par for even moderately priced restaurants, much less for a high-end dining spot. French bread was dry and crumbly, ahi appetizer sauce was too pungent, many of the veal slices were so hard that an ordinary dinner knife could not cut them, the vegetables were limp and wilted, the chocolate cake was stale and sodden. The service was polite but a bit random (several different waiters served various items) and not very attentive. I am not a hard-to-please diner: the Magical Menu food quality was superb at other high end restaurants that participated.
