Fabulous birthday celebration at Chez TJ!
The menu and food was excellent. There is a lack of elegance. Certainly, the lack of indoor waiting area, particularly on a winter evening, was a surprise.
There were 3 items in the tasting menu which was good but the rest was just average and doesnt justify the price.
Also felt the wait time between each item is just too long.
The food and service are awesome, but it shigella overpriced... not recommended.
Great venue for a tasting style menu with excellent and unusual wine pairings.
Obviously it was good enough to be Michelin star restaurant but there wasn’t wow moment. If one had enough experiences such restaurants, it became so so kind of experience for creativity wise. Places was cute & service was good but I wouldn’t spend that much of money personally for that kind of food experience.

Wonderful birthday celebration. The staff was incredibly accommodating to a variety of dietary needs and even made gluten free bread for my husband. The wait team was incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was interesting and delicious. It was a perfect evening!
A Very Charming ambiance, as soon as you are greeted at the entrance. Professional service staff describing the exquisite dining experience we were about to enjoy. Each and every plate brought up was explained in detail. The numerous plate presentations exhibited pleasant and delicious tastes. The wine list and wine pairing were abundant and globally sourced; however we had brought our own for the special dinner occasion. The owner George made sure to stop by introduce himself for a chat and we exchanged our international backgrounds. He again made sure to bid us farewell as we were leaving.
Chez TJ 's food and portion size are down right a major disappointment. If you are going to spend close to $1,400 for two on a dinner, you should at least walk out of there feeling full. I have been to plenty of Michelin starred restaurants(Manresa, Benu, Quince, Baume, Saison, Plumed Horse, Angler, Gary Danko to name a few) and have seen all sort of presentations and portion size. Chez TJ mastered the technique how to reduce your portion to a bird-size with two bites, upsell you on the truffles, caviar(those products are good by itself already without you tinkering). The service was painfully slow and the old house has a haunting stench. I'm like most people who seek out Michelin restaurant to take love ones to celebrate a special event. We got very disappointed and left with a bad taste in the mouth. There is a fine line of taking in a master piece of work of art being served to you or just felt like you got ripped off with a smile. Unfortunately, we felt the latter. The service itself is good but unfortunately everything else is not, very unfortunate. Please save your money and avoid this place.
I have been to Chez TJ before and don't remember so much upselling. Do you want the $120 truffle add on? or the wagu beef add on? I'm already spending $500 for two for dinner - so the upselling (and shamelessly so) feels a bit much.
The pacing was also very uneven. four courses, in fast order then a fourty minute wait till the next one.
I also thought the $130 wine pairing was far overpriced for what was received. six wines - but maybe a 4oz pour each - it felt a bit overpriced for what was received.
Best restaurant in the Bay Area!
Incredible food, service and ambience.
15-course diner can be a challenge for small appetite people.
Excellent food and service! They are vegetarian friendly!!
Almost $500 per head incl fancy wine
lovely meal of many super delicious morsels
one vegetarian and one non
sea bass was off
immediately replaced with beautiful piece of beef
Although the service was great and the staff was attentive, and the quality of food was high, I don’t have a high overall rating because the value of the food and experience was only moderate. I understand the element of surprise to the menu, but when we asked for more information about the addition of truffle, I couldn’t get a clear answer. I asked for how many dishes and what kind of dishes will have the truffles, the waiter said it’s a surprise like the rest of the menu, and that the chef will infuse it and add it to dishES that will pair with it. It was sad when I realized it only came paired with the scallop and nothing else. Their was no infusion of truffles or anything more. It was definitely NOT worth $85! Each dish was nicely presented. The flavoring of the two last dishes (fish and American wagyu) had a lot of opportunities for improvement. The fish was very fishy and just tasted salty. The wagyu was overly salted and hid any true flavor of beef. Because of the that, I really could not enjoy this fish at all. The optional cheese course was a fondue poured over an apple fritter. I wish they gave the option to just have the fondue on the side. They poured it all over the fritter and just drenched it.
Great service, but the dishes could’ve been better executed.
Lovely as always
Really excellent service and a creative menu - lots of pairings that I would not have expected to be delicious, but were surprisingly amazing. Had an excellent time.
This wasn't our first time at Chez TJ, and everything was as we expected it. Certainly it's not a cheap dinner experience, even when compared to 1-michelin star restaurants they are on the expensive side, but the quality of the food, the presentation and service are on par with the expectations. Every entree ranked from very good to exceptional. No point discussing specific entrees since it's a tasting menu and it varies continuously. Keep in mind that on top of the regular price for the tasting menu there are a few proposed additions that can easily add 50% or more to the bill, so plan accordingly.
If I had to mention one thing that could have been better was the desserts. This time we're good but not exceptional, last time we went they were absolutely off the charts, creative, fun, unexpected and delicious.
The highest score in my opinion goes to the vintage wine tasting experience. More than twice more expensive than the regular wine tasting, but worth it. Every wine was unique, complex, and perfectly paired with the food it came with. The sommelier provided great background on each wine and enriched the experience even more.
The cozy atmosphere completed a very memorable dinner experience.
There was one minor glitch in our dinner, one of the hoeur d'oeuvres wasn't served, and we only noticed at the end of the dinner when we got a copy of the menu to take home. The waiter was of course very apologetic when we noticed, and at the end they offered a 10$ (0.8%) discount. The apology alone would have looked less comical. Mistakes can happen, we'll be going back anyway.
Great food, in elegant setting.
Wine pairing is optimal, could be better.
Food was good, just need to have slightly more portions size, then just 1 bite.
The food and wine pairing were great. We had the grand wine pairing and some of the special wines they had were truly one of a kind.
The service is outstanding.
Amazing dinner with impeccable service. Well worth the price
This was a 50 th birthday celebration. It was like having a celebration in a library. As compared to other high end dining experiences I’ve had the pleasure of participant in, Chez TJ doesn’t stand up to Gary Danko or La Foile. 3 out of the 10 dishes were exemplary, the rest were pro forma, interesting at best. However our experience did exceed Danko and Foile in one category.....the check. With 2 glasses of middle of the road wine and a corkage fee, my check for 2 was almost $700. Twice the price of Danko or Minna and a third as satisfying.
If you’ve got a bucket list that includes this restaurant then cross it off, but don you didn’t know.
Service was excellent. Everyone was super friendly, not at all stuffy. Food was beautifully prepared. Both tasty and pretty. Even the butter presentation was fabulous. The course pacing was excellent. I would happily come here again. My only two critiques were these.
First, the wine pairing (five different wines with the meal), at $295 per person supplement was OK, but not a great value given the quality of the wines. The sommelier was very friendly and knowledgeable, and if it had been $295 for the two of us, OK. But normally when I pay $600 for wine at a restaurant, I am getting a bottle that is is at or near 100 point rated. I would say step up the wines, or step down the pricing on the pairing.
Second, just a disclosure, their caviar presentation was wholly non-traditional. Both my wife and I liked it, she more than I, but if you are expecting a caviar presentation with blini's and accoutrements, it won't be that. Reasonably priced, tasty, but not traditional.
Overall. Great job. You have a good thing going, Chez TJ!
The service staff is exceptional. Especially the Sommelier who did an outstanding job describing each wine with enthusiasm!
The 12-course dinner is just OK. For $225/person plus wine pairings is not outrageous but for what we got, I was not impressed. The building itself is very dated, smells musty which detracts from what could be a pleasant ambiance.
I went once, probably wouldn’t go back or recommend.
Food is good overall. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the price of 300 pp after tax and tips. I think they raised their prices because they want to get a two star.
Great service, dining room was a bit dim. Food has unique flavors, every dish is approximately bite sized. Food was visually appealing.
Beautiful culinary journey. The Chef and pastry Chef are very skilled. Loved the antilope, the fish and the cannelé! The only downside is the decor that is a little outdated as well as the service that felt a little rushed, although the waiters were all very attentive.
We had a surprise menu and it was an awesome experience. It's not a cheap place, but it's worth it.
I enjoyed course menus with wine pairing.
It was excellent wine matching with each food.
And waiter offer good option like additional truffle or additional cheese dish.
The cheese option after main dish was amazing.
Chez TJ is best French Restaurant ever.
The service was outstanding, but we had two issues with the dinner. They served a course that was served under with a cloche with smoke. It did not impart any flavor to the dish and filled the restaurant with smoke that did not dissipate. Was hard to enjoy dessert when it smelled like mesquite. My only other issue was the cost of the mineral water. $45 a bottle for water is outrageous.
I think it's a really fun experience and great way to eat high end foods that a lot of other restaurants don't typically serve. That is the key tho, the price reflects more the price of the ingredients served and the amazing service the restaurant provides. This is really a delight for a foodie but anyone else may way to save a substantial amount of money and eat somewhere else.
Simply amazing. Incredible service, presentation, and food.
Chez TJ was very good - I had multiple small sized meals. It's the first non Indian Michelin I've been to. The price was about 2-3x times a regular 1 star Michelin, but I had a very good meal. It was the first time I had antelope and Caviar. Definitely get the optional cheese course. They also had some wine options - but I don't drink, but the table next to me seemed to enjoy it. I had a little stomach ache the next day, but that is probably because I never ate such a diverse variety of food. Except for the priciness compared to other 1 star Michelin's - I would strongly recommend you try this restaurant. I love the way it looks - like a house. I never even knew this was a Michelin despite walking by it everyday for almost a year.
What a wonderful place to celebrate the special event of your life. The food, service, and everything are just superb. They make everything possible to make sure we enjoy everything and every bite. This is the place to go if you want to have a meal that is going to give you the memory of your life time.
Highly, highly recommended.
Excellent food!. The presentation was like art. Their Michelin start is well deserved.
Very nice place, this was my first Michelin star dining experience and was very enjoyable. Food was elegant and could identify subtle notes in dishes. They were more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions...
Overall good first Michelin experience!
Very creative cuisine with inspiration from everywhere in the world.
The chef got the art to mix different flavors in a very subtle way.
The wine pairing is also surprising, non conventional and generous.
Having tried other 1 star and 2 star restaurants, that one deserve another star if we just consider the quality and the creation of the dishes.
One of the best places I’ve been to!!!
