Chez TJ is hitting on all cylinders right now. Always good but now close to perfection.
Quite a lot more expensive than I expected but excellent food and service.
The location is in Mountain view in a nice small house, there is a fireplace and the waiters/som
are ultra-attentive. This was perfect for my goal which was a break from the kids with the wife.
The dishes are very small but there are a lot of them so plan to spend 3-4 hours.
The wine choices made by the Som were really good and enhanced the taste. I definitely recommend the pairing.
The only negative is the cost is high which is understandable as the place is small, lots of staff, som, etc
so I'll come here less than I would want to.
Chez TJ was selected for a birthday dinner. The tasting menu, unknown in advance, featured many fish dishes, all tasty, but I would have preferred more meat. Presentation was quite attractive. Wine pairings were appropriate. The price turned out to be quite high, compared to what I am used to. Server was affable; sommelier was less clear and friendly.
Chez TJ was ok, we went there for a date night after a long time. Service/host were really good. Food was ok, majority of dished were seafood based (oyster/lobster/salmon/mackerel ) and similar sauce/taste so after a while they all tasted like each other. There was one lamb dish at the end which was different and nice. Time between coursed were pretty long (~10-15 minutes) so we were there for almost 3 hours. Overall ok, but we didn't come out with a wow experience to say it was worth the price.
Outstanding! Of the handful Michelin restaurants I've had the good fortune to visit, this one has quickly moved up to the top of my list of favorites. The atmosphere was cozy, for example, we were in a room with only three other tables. The food, I described to a friend, was more like art. The service seemed choreographed. Everything was just wonderful. At one point they brought out one of two desserts which included passion fruit, of which I'm not a fan. Two minutes later our server came back to let me know the chef wanted offer the same thing with a different fruit. I didn't take them up on the offer since there was really so much food, but the gesture did not go unnoticed. It was a wonderful three-hour experience.
Though not directly a fault of the restaurant, I was disappointed that people around us were wearing jeans; one person was in jeans and a sweatshirt. To all at Chez TJ: thank you for making my birthday celebration a memorable experience.
Chez TJ is oustanding in all aspects. They have an amazing tasting menu. You will have a great experience as well. The staff is amazing and the presentation of food itself is a delight.
A tasting menu to remember with personalized service for our anniversary. Will do it again.
Unbelievable! Exceeded all expectations. Scott was the ultimate host. From the canapés to petit fours and some indulgent supplements, the evening was perfectly orchestrated.
Never disappoints. Excellent food and service and pleasant atmosphere. What more could you ask for? Will definitely come again.
Exquisite cuisine, outstanding wines and superb service!
This was ok, but only just. Food was fine but really not great. Service was good and the wine pairings were ok.
I really wanted to like this place. The service was amazing. The server was attentive, good humored, and took care of everything.
The food was primarily seafood based which wasnt my jam but it was good. The desserts were great.
My complaint is that about an hour into the dinner the chef started berating his sous chef. Not just the usual hurry up or dont burn the steak but actual screaming. It went on for a long time and happened repeatly. I am not one to complain but at one point I had to say something to the server.
Honestly as a human I feel like I should have went into the kitchen and spoke to the chef one on one. It was like watching Gordan Ramsey but in Mountain View. After I spoke with the server it seemed to get better but I still heard him through the night. For a $500 meal I would have expected more.
I waited a day to write this review because I wanted to be sure it wasnt just me being upset with the way I heard another human being treated. I cant in good faith recommend this restaurant. I did my best to enjoy the rest of the evening. I gave one star for the food and one star for the service and would have given it 5 stars but the chef ruined it for me. If you want to go then reqest a table far from the kitchen.
TLDR: Great food and service-chef needs to learn human decency.
The Chef's tasting menu is a surprise, you don't know what you'll be getting until each course arrives. That said, each course was delightful and the wine pairings were thoughtful and well considered. It seemed impossible to have a more perfect course than the one just finished, but each course managed to top the preceding one.
For my budget this is a strictly special occasion restaurant, but one I will anticipate with great pleasure.
A most remarkable meal in a year in which we have had a number of remarkable meals in European Michelin Star restaurants. Chez TJ ranks with our favorites, especially in terms of creativity in the (chef’s surprise framework) tasting menu, and the eloquent sommelier’s creative but perfectly matched choices.
Take your time and enjoy the ride. It’s a culinary journey worth experiencing at least once.
Excellent food over several courses. Waygu beef add-on was small but tasty. I would come back for special occasions given the price point.
Food is good, service is very good. But too expensive for the occasion. Have had better meals for lower pricing.
My husband and I went to Chez TJ to celebrate his birthday. The dining experience was amazing. Super polite and helpful staff, food was out-of-this-worldly awesome, impressive wine list, very cozy and private ambiance. We walked out of there convinced that Chez TJ will make it to Michelin 2 star very soon, so we felt that the meal came with good value: a 2-star food experience at the price of 1-star!
We loved the mysterious 12-course dinner vibe. We did't have to worry about ordering or deciding which tasting menu. We simply decided on the pairing menu and sat back. The service was impeccable and the Wine Director, Paul Carayas, did a splendid job of making us feel comfortable and curious about the selections he made for each course. We adored the fact that we were introduced to new wines that we would otherwise have not sought out. Overall, an amazing experience.
Beyond outstanding cuisine, wine and service. Extremely creative and delicious dishes.
Pleasantly surprised, Chez TJ is clearly going for a second star.
Came here the first time for my birthday. The restaurant is a house, clean and well maintained front yard and porch. Parking wasn't very convenient since we have to park either on the street or in the open parking lot across the street. It really depends on the time. It may take a while to find parking.
We were seated in the front, windows facing the street. It was a cozy room with 3 tables. It got a little noisy since a party of four arrived and they talked a little too loud for a small room.
Service was excellent. Menu was surprised menu and there were 12 courses. Food was very creative, prepared perfectly, and delicious. Ingredients were fresh since the restaurant uses herbs and some vegetables from the garden in the backyard. We opted for standard wine pairing. We got 7 wines and they were chosen to go with the courses really well.
At the end of the meal, our server brought me a small piece of carrot cake with a candle and a birthday card for my birthday. How thoughtful was that! We left with two happy and filled stomachs. It was pricey but it was a pleasant dining experience.
Chez TJ is an amazing place that is not for the faint of heart. This is a magical experience should be done at least once in a lifetime. The menu is a mystery. You show up and sit down and the show begins. Small bites one at a time are brought out with magical presentations. It feels like each course is only about 2 bites but there are so many you end the meal feeling very full. This is a place where you want to try everything - even things you think you don't like - as their take on it will be different from anything you have ever had before. For couples, this is a place to make some amazing memories. The restaurant is tiny so you will need reservations. The restaurant is expensive, so be prepared. But once you go I guarantee you will want to go again.
The service was fantastic, the food was inspiring, and the staff were knowledgeable and proud of their restaurant.
It is a lovely setting. Comfortable, cozy home with a nice garden. Overall experience is still good. The food this time was not as innovative and it was salty. Details to service was lacking... they placed us right next to another table when the element of surprise (of the menu) is a key part of the evening. So, we saw the dishes they were being served. Half way through, we asked to be moved and they obliged without any issues. However, as we left, we saw that they sat another party next to each other too (and the restaurant had many empty tables in different rooms).
Celebrated a wedding anniversary here and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for making it a memorable evening. The food was great and being in converted residential home made it stand out. Everything was pretty much on point and I feel you get your money's worth here.
To me, this is still one of the absolute top 5 restaurants in California. Simple, amazing service, really excellent food. It's not cheap - but it also never disappoints.
Wonderful well thought out dishes that were both sweet and savory with wine pairings that emphasized each preparation. The shigoku oyster tasted like the sea then followed up with a garden green fritter that contained wagu, just a few of the amazing dishes we had! Simply an outstanding meal!
This was the best meal we’ve ever had at Chez TJ. Service was also friendlier than before.
Seriously great food and service. Definitely worth the price. Three hour dinner did not feel like three hours.
Absolutely exquisite. This latest visit (Aug 2018) we had the Grand pairing (instead of the regular pairing), and the choices and how they complemented each dish were literally astonishing. The food was (as always) perfect, and the dinner well paced over a few hours. We've been fine dining all over the world, including numerous visits to Paris, and Chez TJ is as good as (or better) than the best 3 starred restaurants we've visited. Besides all that, a major plus is the small, intimate atmosphere and very friendly and knowledgeble staff. Highly recommended!!
Service was SLOW and spotty. They said "expect three hours" but it turned into three-and-a-half, and the final courses and dessert were REALLY slowed down. We were getting tired of waiting. They should know that, without a wine pairing, the courses need to come a little faster, even so, sometimes it took 20 minutes for the next offering, after the prior dish was a mere two bites!
They asked at first if we wanted truffles and Wagyu steak, saying we have a few courses to decide, but then they never returned to the question later.
Some of the courses were also hit-and-miss. Their "secret" tea was weird and unpalatable, and their foie gras was hidden under a cloud of foamy fat, so hidden we couldn't locate it and didn't know when/if we ate it all.
Highlights: Asian influences within a French cuisine, amuses bouches, desserts and petit fours. The best offering was a black cod morsel which had layers of flavor that kept coming.
We had a vegan tasting menu and it was phenomenal. The chefs are happy to cater to any dietary restriction - just ask! We had the "daily" wine pairings and they were amazing. Also opted for the black truffle supplement and we have no regrets.
Dine hear soon - they only have about a year left, maybe less!
Had a great time celebrating our special day. Service is in point and the foods are delicious. Get ready to spend a few hours there.
Delighted with the experience! The meal progressed from perfect bite to perfect bite with friendly attentive staff and carefully crafted dishes that were as beautiful to look at as they were to taste. I tried several ingredients I thought I didn't like and was very pleasantly surprised. Truly a "Food as Art" experience to remember.
incredible food, with wonderful service, outstanding wine pairings in great venue.
It is really, really expensive, though
Tasteless interior and the food did not impress me either. I have been to much more fascinating places in the area for a third of the price. I assume I am simply paying for their Michelin star.
I couldn't wait to leave after spending nearly FOUR hours there with huge time gaps between bites with nothing to do if you are not getting wasted. And if you don't drink alcohol, you are mostly stuck with water or lemonade.
Every dish was beautiful and delicious. Each new dish was delivered and described and savored. What a treat!!
