Chez Philippe - Peabody Hotel Memphis Ratings and Reviews
Arrived on time for our pre-theater 6:30pm reservations. The host was standing with his back to us and when turning in surprise to see guests, we greeted him and gave our name to be seated immediately. He informed us that “Jon” would be our server. Alex appeared shortly after to explain the menu coursing options. We chose 4-course dinners and gave our selections. He asked if we were going to the Orpheum, which we were, and informed us that as our show started at 8pm, he would watch the time for us so we could enjoy our meal.
The courses began with elegant delicacies, delighting our senses with beets and mushrooms. Those dishes were whisked away and second course brought out with poached halibut, absolutely delicious! But, this is where they began to fail. We sat for 20 minutes waiting for our third course: lamb and filet mignon. When it arrived to our table, we voiced our concern to Alex, who asked if we wanted the desserts prepared now due to the time. It was 7:50. I asked if we would be able to take it to go as we would be late for the show and he offered to get the maitre d. We literally wolfed our entree in 2 minutes and waited yet again. When no one returned to our table, we stepped to the host to find out how to pay. The maitre d arrived then to offer us a chauffeured ride to the Orpheum. It was 7:59. There was no apology, no explanation for the 20-minute delay, and no offer to compensate for lack of dessert. We paid full price with gratuity to Alex (never met Jon) and missed the first 12 minutes of the Phantom thanks to no word that we should expect them to take at least 2 hours for our dining experience.
Highly disappointed for this kind of fine dining.
The food was a great experience - eclectic and interesting, the ambiance quiet and elegant. I opted into the wine pairing with the 4 course dinner and was very disappointed in the experience. The server had no intentions of describing the wine pairings, which is a significant reason why I opted in - to experience and learn about different wines. When I requested more information than the obvious "a red wine from _", the server communicated my request to the sommelier, and he poured the remaining wine pairings; unfortunately, little information or value was added to the experience. My expectations for a restaurant of this caliber would be that the servers would have the knowledge and expertise (and preparation) for those that opt in to the wine pairings, and the sommelier would be the ultimate expert. Either the servers and sommelier were not interested in making the extra effort, or they did not have the knowledge and expertise to do so. For a couple who has a great interest (and somewhat decent knowledge) in wine, this piece missed the mark, especially considering the cost and caliber of the restaurant. The food was enjoyable and interesting, but/and the service "style" was more traditional than engaging. Overall, it was a good experience, but our preferences/expectations for fine dining were not fully met at Chez Philippe.
We did the seven course tasting menu, my husband was kind of intimidated by the first course of apple jelly and pate, but after that we enjoyed all of the other dishes from amazing burrata to chicken cordon blue. We thought the two steaks were the best steaks in our lives.
The servers were friendly, kind, attentive. The host: a lovable gentleman. It's fancy schmancy setting but the staff were not snotty or rude. We loved our dining experience and would recommend it 100%.
The staff was very attentive to the guest. The staff answered all question and were knowledgable about the food . The staff was very friendly and carring. As we left the maitre d gave us a card signed with a personnel note by him and the staff congratulating my wife and I on our anniversary. I would definitely come back again when in Memphis. This was a great experience!!!
We had the four course meal and also enjoyed several amuse bouche and palate cleansing chef bonuses. I have been to a few outstanding restaurants all over the world, and this restaurant is right up there among the best of them all! The food was wonderful, the portions were just right and the service was impeccable.
This fine dining experience has so many pluses. The food quality is very high and the over -all experience whispers elegance. Repeatedly addressing the "head" of the party as Mr. or Ms. (Surname) during table service works very well and does not seem forced in any way.
My suggestion is a simple one. There were only two of us in my party and while I was very pleased that the first course came out quickly, subsequent courses could stand to be slowed down so the meal is more evenly paced. Food portions are ample and given the rich quality of the various courses, the pace of the courses needs more time between the finish of one course and the beginning of the next.
Between the third and fourth course I reeqeuested that service be delayed until I signaled for resumption. My request was met with appropriateness and dispatch. In truth, the best service would have been for the waiter to notice food being left on plates and to take it upon himself to ask if the head of the table would line the pacing slowed.
At one point during the third course, while I was still consuming my food the waiter or bus-person (can't really remember which) noticed that my companion has stoped eating and then asked me if we were finished with the course.
I responded with a simple, "No".
These fine points of service are essential at this dining level, and consistent execution in this area will heighten and already fine food experience.
This is the premiere place to eat in Memphis. The chef prepares outstanding cuisine that truly matches the ambience, which is unparalleled in the South. We chose the four course dinner, including the table-side prepared Caesar salad, ocean, land, and dessert courses. The service is highly professional, well-timed, and balances attention to your table while allowing privacy.
I've dined at Chez Philippe a number of times, always enjoyed the service, ambiance and cuisine. While a four diamond, the ambiance, cuisine and service is five diamond. I had the four tasting menu, with wine. I'm rather fond of the old formal style of dining, which is rare nowadays. I would recommend the venue for foodies, as a romantic interlude and for small groups.
We've been to Chez Philippe a few times this year, this was the first time since they changed the menu however. As usual they never disappoint. Wine .. Awesome. Service ... Excellent. Meal ... Overall Splendid however, the Entrée steaks were just slightly overcooked. Still an A+ experience.
