The reason for this evaluation is lack of hospitality. Our reservation was for 6:00. Due to heavy traffic on a rainy evening, we were running a few minutes late and called to let the hostess know. Arriving 15 minutes later, we were surprised to have the hostess, with the new owner standing there, tell us we must finish by 8:00, as another party had reserved the table. No welcome whatsoever. The gracious previous owner would never have said that. We elected to give up our table and took a table in the bar. Dinner took very long to be served, but the bartender who waited the table was very friendly. We cannot say that of the owner or the hostess. The food is good, but the customer should be treated with respect.
Wonderful selection of entrees and great service. We will be back soon for another visit !
So pleased that after an ownership change this fine dining restaurant still hits all the right notes. Congratulations Brian for maintaining the high standards Chez Max set under the M/M Lecompte.
Best Dover Sole ever. Good menu of wine by the glass. Always a wonderful time
The food was delicious and the service outstanding. Love this place!
All was fine with one major exception. I ordered an old-fashioned which was delicious, but the glass was only half full. I made an attempt to find out what happened, but don't think I conveyed my thoughts adequately, for there was no offer to make the other half of the drink.
Fantastic service and food. My wife and I can’t wait to go back with friends.
ONE OF THE TOP RESTAURANTS IN RICHMOND. IMPECCABLE FOOD AND SERVICE
IN A QUIET AN COZY SURROUNDING.
My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and Chez Max was the logical choice for such and important occasion.
The service was thoroughly prompt and professional. Our meals were perfectly prepared and presented.
While we cannot be considered "regulars" we have always had a very pleasant experience each time we have dined at this distinctive venue.
Most wonderful brunch place! Went today for the third time, had Croque Madames, have had omelets and smoked salmon crepes and eggs Benedict on other occasions. Brunch with friends in the dining room was our favorite get-together with friends because the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. Today’s Croques Madames, eaten at the bar, were rich and filling with perfect balance of crispy and soft cheeses and Black Forest ham.
Our plates were artfully arranged, the food always the right temperature. It may be a little thing but an every-time-poached-perfectly egg is a true brunch joy.
Sunday turns out to be a good day to visit Chez Max as Chef Skip’s menu and bartender Tim’s cocktails seem especially enjoyable when the restaurant is in “Sunday casual” mode. A different atmosphere from elegant evening meals - great idea, hope it’s here to stay!
I have always liked Chez Max, and still do under the new management. It is very expensive! I always get the liver and onions. I was there about 6 weeks ago and also had the liver. This time the pieces were considerable smaller and the onions were done differently, which I did not like as well as how they were prepared before. The chocolate dessert was terrific.
Chez Max never disappoints, best French eatery in Metro Richmond.
A near perfect evening, marred only by two near by tables overly enthusiastic, loud behavior. Unfortunate that some don't recognize they are not at a local fast food establishment and act and dress accordingly. Sorry, but I don't think jeans are appropriate for dinner at Chez Max. Wonder how the regular clientele would respond to a dress code?
The food is presented beautifully. The salad dressing is delicious. For those of us who love liver and onions, the Chez Max version (done Belgian style) is better than Mama's and her's was really really good.
The dinner and service by our waiter was wonderful. We found the starter bread to be a little too crusty and had a slight freezer burn taste. Presentation of the lamb chops was impressive and the hash brown potato round was a lovely addition. I would say a little more of the green vegetable would be good.
Enjoyed the evening!
My favorite restaurant in the Richmond VA area.
All 5 of us had great food. The service was fantastic.
Wonderful French food and lovely wines by the glass and bottle. Excellent value on food and wine. Ask for a table near the fireplace.
Great menu, great service, great food. The owner Brian was wonders to talk to and the Chef came out and walked us through the menu.
I loved my veal chop and the mushroom and artichoke app was amazing. Can’t wait to go back for the Dover Sole.
Outstanding fine dining experience. Will definitely return.
Friendly, welcoming owner who does his best to provide what you request. Circulates among the tables to assure that everything is good. Food is excellent and well presented. Also provides good help with wine choices. Our favorite restaurant in Richmond.
Happy to say that Chez Max is keeping it's great authentic French classical cuisine under the new ownership - yet it's even better with not only traditional favorites on the menu - but some exciting new offerings as well as a nicely expanded wine selection that even includes options for 4oz & 8oz wines by the glass which is terrific if you're wanting to pair smaller glasses of wine by course. Excellent wait staff, engaging owner and all around lovely experience - one of Richmond's bests!
Our entrees were good but the chocolate soufflé was awful. It arrived with a frozen blob inside of all three we had ordered. Clearly undercooked. Very disappointing way to end a good meal. Ambiance is still okay for a meal where it is necessary to have a quiet time-- but truly the decorating is so outdated and drab that it makes the experience feel awkward.
We like to do brunch once in a while and select a restaurant that might offer some unique and different selections. We have visited Chez Max numerous times for very nice evening dinners, so we thought we would give them a try. Well, as usual, the staff and chef's did an excellent good job as expected and we had a delightful brunch, which was reasonably priced...a nice treat!
This French restaurant is charming and never disappoints.
Great dinner and service, but a little pricy. However, I will return.
We had an incredible dinner. The Escargot with puff pastry on top will leave you wanting more. The Veal Sweetbreads were so tender and the Veal Tenderloin with Cognac Crème Fraîche Sauce, come on. To end the meal with took Chef Skip's recommendations, the Tarte Vieille France, which is a Apple and Peach Tarte made with Almond Butter served with Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate and Caramel Sauce. Throw in a great bottle of wine and a fall cocktail for good measure.
Chez Max is a Richmond staple that has recently undergone a change in ownership. The new owner has greatly expanded the wine offerings by the glass -- yippee! -- and begun making some menu changes. Max is traditional, some might say "old school," French, and the food includes many of the expected traditional French menu items, such as crepes, onion soup, Dover sole, etc.. Food quality is consistently high and satisfying, and the server staff is attentive and professional.
Our latest visit was brunch, which is a new day-part for the restaurant. My eggs Benedict were terrific, although I would have liked a bit more hollandaise. My wife's quiche was also excellent with a delicious "eggy" texture, unlike many "custardy" versions, which I find unappealing.
My only criticism is that over the years, brunch aside, Chez Max has maintained the same menu (Richmonders don't respond well to change...!). Our hope is that the new ownership will experiment by adding some new menu items -- while maintaining the restaurant's high quality preparation. If he does, Chez Max will likely look forward to another decade or two of success! Here's hoping!
Went here based on strong recommendations. I have no idea how this restaurant receives such high reviews. The food left much to be desired considering how much it costs to eat here. Service was good. Everything needs to be updated. I would eat at about 10 other restaurants in Richmond before spending that type of money their again. Really regretted eating here and especially for a special occasion. Food was mediocre at best.
Great wait staff, fantastic food. Great experience!
French cuisine is magnificent. Waiters are attentive, poised, and polished. A first class experience with fabulous food.
A nice spot for French food. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable. The dress is nice casual to dressy. The service was good. It could have been a bit better. Waiter was very busy and seemingly had a hard time keeping up. We would recommend a reservation as they are busy. We were there during the middle of the week and it filled up quickly for dinner. The food was delicious and presented well. We enjoyed our experience there and will return again and recommend to friends and family. PS Bartender did a great job with our drinks!
We went for a birthday and received complimentary glasses of champagne. The duck was excellent. The wines were very reasonably priced.
We loved everything with only one dissappointment. One of my guests and I ordered the Dover Sale which on the menu was to be filleted table side. It came already filleted. I asked the waiter about it when he presented the check and his reply was that he didn’t have enough room. We missed that little ceremony.
Food is as good as ever, with new versions of previous offerings.
Dined here a number of times. Food quality this time was not at the same level as previously.
Excellent dining and service as always! The new owner is most gracious and hospitable and has maintained the quality of food and service. He has added a new bar menu for those who want to come for a fun cocktail and more casual dinner than the main dining room. Either way, its a wonderful dining experience!
We always have a wonderful meal here. However, this time the potatoes were extremely salty (we overheard other guests complaining about the salt level as well).
As always, Chez Max is a total experience. Great food, wine and service insure pure dining delight. Don’t miss the cremé caramel. C’est magnifiqué!
