Father’s Day celebration!
wonderful fresh meal with excellent service. We both had fish that was wonderful.
Ambiance and food quality are very good. Everyone enjoyed their entrees (veal, crab cakes, rockfish, sweetbreads). Very nice bottle of Cotes du Rhône for $28, a bargain. Only blemish on the meal was the soufflé my wife ordered. It was either grossly undercooked or a very poor recipe.
Great service! Great food! Great wine! Definitely will come back as this was our second time!!
Food and service always the best. Have always enjoyed our meals.
Great French restaurant in Richmond!! The lobster in saffron butter sauce was delicious. The fish special was also a favorite! Highly recommend!
This was the second time we visited this restaurant. Recent advertising led us back but we had the same impression as before. There are much better restaurants in Richmond than this one.
Chez Max never disappoints. One of our diners had never been to Chez Max and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Escargots were a big hit, shared by all. Lovely sorbets for dessert. Thank you, Chez Max for another wonderful meal.
Chez Max is a wonderful restaurant with a wide selection of appetizers and entrees. The cocktails are generous, the wait staff is timely, and the atmosphere is quiet. It’s nice to be able to carry on a conversation without having to shout. Yea Chex Max!
Excellent service and food.
Lovely place for a French food experience. The bread is fantastic. I felt I was back in Paris.
Fine dining with a good selection of entrees. Large selection of wines and beers. Food preparation was excellent and timely. Table service was excellent and I felt we were not rushed. Atmosphere was quiet with little background noise.
We had a wonderful meal! The escargot was especially yummy!
Much anticipated dinner for special birthday was a huge disappointment. Food was mediocre; one appetizer was not edible. Energetic server not too knowledgeable about menu. Dining room not crowded but very noisy. Seemed popular with locals. Birthday not acknowledged despite prompting. Would not return or recommend.
TIme stopped here in the 80's. The decor needs an update. I hate to be negative because I can see from the many older patrons that this is a beloved restaurant of many years. A few small changes like removing all the fake flowers, baskets of rubber grapes, and updating the wallpaper would go a long way to improving the atmosphere in what is a cozy and otherwise charming building. They have a lovely stone fireplace, which I imagine would be wonderful on a winter's night.
The service was wonderful, the food was good quality but uninspired. We had crab cakes which came with a thick, heavy, bland mayonase sauce on top and plain steamed asparagus and mashed potatoes. It was not bad but could have been so much better. It may well be that bland food is what is desired by the current older clientele and if that is a purposeful decision, I get it. It's just not what we expected at an upscale restaurant.
Have been going here for a number of years and observed that, despite new management, the food quality remained high. Will continue to dine here as long as the standards are maintained.
With new owners, it may be time to update the décor, but,,,,don't touch the food. It is outstandingE
Oliver's service was excellent. The food was good but not as good as usual. The appetizer serving size, and salad size was about half of what it has been in the past. The new owner greeted us by telling us that we needed to call ahead before bringing our new wine in the future, and that it would not be allowed if it is on his list. While I understand he is looking to improve the wine selection, I was put off by being greeted in this way: we dine there about once a month. Not sure if I am going back.
Service and food were exceptional just as always. Will return often.
Great food. Wonderful service. One of our favorite places for a special dinner.
Very friendly staff, impeccable service and a delicious steak dinner! What could be better than that?
Chez Max is a favorite and never disappoints. I have ALWAYS ordered the veal tenderloin dish but this time, decided to try the lamb chops. They were also delicious but won’t tempt me continually like the veal!
Intimate rooms break down the noise level that you find in a lot of restaurants. The food was excellent. The service started out very well, but as the evening wore on it definitely dropped off. It was hard to get our servers attention to ask for anything. We waited so long for the dessert menu, that we ended up not ordering any and just asked for the bill.
This was our first visit to Chez Max. My husband and I were not aware that it was under new ownership as of a few weeks ago. However, we were undeterred and was looking forward to a good experience. This restaurant met all of our expectations with satisfaction. We ordered two different fish entrees and they were delicious. Food was hot, which is NOT the case in most of the restaurants we frequent. Fish was fresh, cooked to perfection, and nice presentation on the plate. My compliments to the chef for giving us a delicious meal. We plan to go back very soon and hope our next visit will be as pleasant as that night.
My only complaint was that the lighting was very low and we couldn't read the menu very well.
First class food and service. Absolutely fresh and delicious ...from appetizers to desserts.
I am writing this review just a few days before a new owner takes over.
In the past CHEZ MAX has been one of Richmond's finest restaurant. However, we don't know what will happen from this point forward. Let's hope that the new management continues with the same level of service and quality of food. If so, it is well worth a visit to this long time Richmond "landmark"
The essence of fine dining in non-pretentious French setting. The food is uniformly exceptional and the owners see that every detail is perfect- more than just the food.
Best for only occasional dinners out- it's too easy to be spoiled by the ways things "should be " done.
My husband & I never miss a chance to dine at Chez Max during the Valentine's Day week. Such a romantic setting!
It goes without saying that the food and wine are exquisite!
Wonderull food, nice wine and flawless service.
This is our go to restaurant for a taste of France. The taste, quality, and atmosphere is very special to us. We have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. It is our special place for special memories, do not miss it!
Service was slow and a rather inattentive. On the plate presentation excellent. Very few choices for Paleo.
Wine selection limited—the wine we chose based on the recommendation of the server, gave us both a headache immediately-meaning too many tannins. Please, Chez Max, choose better wines! We are happy to pay for good ones at such a venue.
We were very disappointed in our experience at Chez Max. First, we had looked up prices on the internet and when we got the menu at the restaurant, the prices had been raised. Then we ordered the calamari as an appetizer and it was undercooked and stringy. That was followed by the salad, which was a couple of rolled up leaves of lettuce and a few grape tomatoes. We were not asked about a choice of dressing. One man, two tables down from us was also surprised as we could tell by the look on his face when his salad was placed before him. Our entrees were good, however the sides, which again we had no choice in what they were, were extremely small. One was still hungry upon completion of meal. All in all, will probably never go back again!
Went the night before Valentine's Day (February 13)--The restaurant was "packed" and the service was good and the food was outstanding. DO NOT MISS GOING TO CHEZ MAX.
It was the best meal I've had in a long time. The food, service, and atmosphere were all great. Being about 5 minutes from home means I'll definitely be back again.
CHEZ MAX continues to be one of Richmond's finest dining venues. It is well worth the drive to the far West End to experience the truly superb menu. From Dover Sole to the Duck l'orange to one of the best filet mignon in town.
We were looking something a little different for a special event (birthday). The food was OUTSTANDING and the menu providing a great deal of selection. This is a very fine restaurant.
Excellent food and service. Our favorite French restaurant in Richmond.
Good meal and service, unique setting for a restaurant.
We enjoy going to chez max. We have been several times and enjoy the experience.
Easily one of the top restaurants in our area. Food, ambience, service—everything is outstanding. Fellow diners are respectful of others, keeping conversations at a reasonable level. Unfortunately we are not finding this attribute in many restaurants these days. Just one more very positive thing about Chez Max.
