The food, service and attention (thanks, Ian) were excellent! Nice, quiet place for easy conversation— very glad we went there!
Food was delicious and plentiful! First time dining at Chez Max... will certainly be returning!
Ian is a fantastic waiter.
Had the Dover sole specialty it was phenomenal. Amazing cheese cake. Just what you would want in a French restaurant, very delicious very rich food.
We love chez max! It was delicious with great service.
It’s always wonderful at chez max. Food, service, cocktails. It’s our go to almost always. This night the boys enjoyed the rack of venison special. Outstanding!
Loved our visit as usual -- The Dover Sole was especially lovely - as was our service from Tim -- So glad Chez Max is still here !!!
Beautiful place ... We went on a Tuesday night so it was a little quiet but loved the ambience and the food !!!! Would love to go there again !!!!!
Awesome in every aspect. Dole sole filet tablesside. Best escargot I’ve ever had. Totally professional service.
We will be back soon.
Enjoyed it...tuna tartar excellent...lamb chops and filet great...onion soup was a little over peppery, but still good...have not been in a while, but will be back!
Wonderful atmosphere and great service. This is our go to spot for special occasions.
This restaurant has several levels to the experience. If you are looking for great food and classy ambiance and outstanding service, this is the place. It all starts at the front door and goes on until you leave for the evening. The Host/Owner makes you feel like you belong. Our Waiter, Biagio was very helpful and delivered spot on service. The meal was top notch. We had Lamb Chops and Veal. Both were Fantastic!
Excellent restaurant. Great wine list! Had the filet and it was first class. Out waiter was Rollin and he was excellent-personable, attentive, professional, and engaging! New owner Brian was knowledgeable and welcoming!
The closest we have seen to a former favorite, La Petite France. Outstanding food presented just as it should. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing or pretentious. This was our first visit to Chez Max, but it won't be our last.
Chez Max is always wonderful. Best Sole Meniere in Richmond
Superb service and magnificent meal!
Always a pleasure to go to a classic "fine dining" restaurant. There is nothing "cutting edge" about the cuisine at Chez Max, unless, you, as I do, feel that food that is wonderfully prepared, extremely delicious, and beautifully presented is cutting edge. The seasoning and accompanying sauces complimented our entrees beautifully (we both had fish dishes) as did the vegetables. While Chez Max is great for special occasions, it deserves consideration anytime you'd like treat yourself to a fantastic dining experience.
Perfect Valentine’s dinner. Food, service- everything was perfect!!
Everything was wonderful! The filet mignon was perfect and my chocolate souffle was to die for!
Very nice. Excellent service and food.
Our special evening was just that, very special. There was the problem of noise, which I'm not sure was the fault of the room or a rather loud patron. The service was a little spotty, I requested that we not be rushed and then things shifted to a crawl.
Our meal was delicious from beginning to end. My wife's lamb chops were spot on, had a very pink interior, but cooked. My bouillabaisse was enormous, which I couldn't finish. The seafood was perfect, not overcooked and the flavor was beautiful.
We hadn’t dined at Chez Max in awhile and I was craving the escargot and Dover sole. They were both outstanding. I am picky about my creme brûlée and it was prepared perfectly. Everything was absolutely delicious. We received superb service from Roland. We were hosting two out of town friends and it was a wonderful evening.
Had a very pleasant dinner in a relaxed atmosphere...service was very good, but unobtrusive. Food was delicious and with a nice presentation
Excellent food and service!
We highly recommend it.
This is our go-to for any occassion or special occassion. The meals are delicious as are the deserts and the fireplace is warm and inviting on a winter’s evening.
A couple of us had the bouillabaisse and were very unimpressed though the waiter raved about it. It had so many mussel and clam shells it was difficult to find any fish, scallops and shrimp.
Difficult because there was 1 scallop and two tiny pieces of fish. An expensive bowl of broth.
Dinner on the whole was very lackluster.
Food was terrific as always.
Fabulous place. Meal was outstanding! Will be back again soon!
Chez Max is always a treat! We visited for a friends birthday and the evening was incredible. The new owner is doing a great job. The menu and wine list enhancements are greatly appreciated. I look forward to returning soon!
Everything was great. Unfortunately they ran out of chocolate soufflé. Also i specified it was my mother’s birthday but she did not get a glass of champagne as advertised
Atmosphere was quiet but elegant. Just right for celebrating our anniversary. Food was well prepared and served while still warm. Service was timely and not rushed. Server was friendly and helpful in menu selection. Chez Max is now on our "keepers" list. We have already recommended it to several of our friends.
I was very disappointed with my food, compared to the many times I have dined there. I have always ordered the same appetizer and entree but decided to try something different from the seasonal menu. The sauce on the Coquille St Jacques, which should be rich and creamy, had divided. My date ordered the veal medallions, my regular order. The flavor was good but the sauce was different than it used to be and the wonderful potato puff of the past was replaced with a scoop of mashed potatoes. Our waiter did a very good job.
The ambiance is always special and our server was so attentive!! Thanks for yet another wonderful evening!
First the positive- loved how cozy the restaurant looked. It seemed like a little French auberge in the middle of the west end. The drinks were great and fairly priced. We had a nice table. Nice setting. The menu was great and had a nice selection.
The negative- nobody was at the 'front desk' when we walked in to greet us. We waited and waited and then finally decided to walk in the restaurant and wander to find the rest of our party and our table. Everybody's food was great except for one person's- fish was overcooked and flavorless. The last thing that we found quite rude was that our children shared an appetizer, an entree ($26) and a dessert (They are 6 and 7 and there is no kids menu- which is totally fine). The waiter told us that he could split the salad and the entree for them into 2 plates- which we thought was nice....he just omitted to tell us that they would charge us $7.50 just for 'splitting the dishes'. Considering we spent about $350, I found that a bit stiff.... Not sure I would go back. It's clearly not about the $7.50 but rather the way it was done. Disappointing!
It has probably been 8 years since my wife and I last went to Chez Max. We had a very nice meal with EXCELLENT service. We shared the foie gras appetizer which was excellent and then my wife had the duck and I had the lamb. Both dishes were very good but I think the lamb was better. Chez Max does cut some corners as all of the entrees come with the same sides instead of tailoring the sides for the protein. I would say that our server did a great job managing our courses and made our visit to this restaurant very enjoyable.
Food was bland overall, particularly the Caesar salads and scallop entree.
Lovely evening out! Service was outstanding and the Rockfish and Duck L'Orange were wonderful.
Outstanding service, excellent additions to the regular menu with the seasonal options. Lovely, warm ambiance with excellent craft cocktail and wine menu. Would absolutely recommend!
Great birthday celebration!
Very disappointing. Awkward and annoying service. Menu and food pedestrian. Most incompetent waiter we’ve ever experienced. French food from the 50s.
My soup was 'lukewarm' and my salad was very tasty. We couldn't wait to eat and leave because the chairs were very uncomfortable. The chairs are those cheap, very small, old restaurant chairs you see in an ice-cream parlors. We'll never go back for that reason. when we spend lots of money for a good meal, we ant to be comfortable and have room.
