Chez Joel Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I went for a romantic evening. The atmosphere was very inviting and relaxing. Service was excellent as was the food. It was some of the best French cuisine I’ve had in a long time. I would highly recommend this place for anyone crazing a taste of France or a romantic evening.
This certainly was not what I was expecting when we walked in. I read many reviews before reserving & no one mentioned how small & crowded it is. We both ordered Coq au Vin. It was hard to eat with so many small bones; hazardous. Loved the Olive Tapenade served with the french bread. The French choux pastry, served with the Profiteroles, was stale & hard.
Nice addition to neighborhood, just not for us.
We had high expectations for this restaurant. Our server did a very good job. However, some of the dishes we ordered lacked flavor. One of the desserts was a disaster because it was burnt and bland. My portions were very small and the mashed potatoes were cold. This restaurant has potential but the manager must pay close attention to what is done in the kitchen.
have eaten here a number of times, primarily for personal reasons with my wife and friends but also this week with business clients. The meals are excellent, prepared as requested with a nice variety of choices. The French influence has a strong positive influence on their offerings. This past weekend they opened the windows/doors to the sidewalk and had a wonderful breeze blowing through the main room. I noticed for the first time that they had a secluded outdoor dining area fenced off from the sidewalk. an excellent choice.
Chez Joel is a lovely neighborhood gem, French bistro in a traditionally Southern Italian neighborhood.
Very good French food with delicious flavors and beautiful presentation!
Valet parking is available and paid street parking on Taylor. North and South of Taylor street, parking is strictly residential.
Highly recommend Chez Joel.
We had a reservation for 5 people at7:00 pm last Saturday, and called the restaurant to let them Know we would be a half hour late. They were very gracious and said they would save our table. When we arrived we were shown right to our table. The server was friendly and efficient. They did not have the wine I ordered, but the substitution they suggested was excellent, and within $2.00 of the price of the requested wine.
The food was excellent and the presentation lovely. Our water glasses were never left empty as is the case frequently in busy restaurants.
It was our daughter's birthday and the serve having overheard our toasting her, made sure she received a special dessert treat, which we did not request. Very thoughtful gesture.
Our daughter and her husband suggested this restaurant because they had been there before and liked it. We think it is a great restaurant and are bringing out-of-town guests there this weekend.
If you like classic french food....
First timer who will certainly be back. Our group started with a plate of pate, escargot, and salads. All wonderful. One of our party tried the lentil soup. Delicious. Our entrees were bouillabaisse, filet topped with foie gras, squash ravioli, duck breast and confit, and coq au vin. All were very well prepared. Deserts were creme brulee and ice cream. Wine was reasonably priced and good.
Service was attentive bordering on "are they rushing us" attentive. Intimate setting. Patio loked nice but down pour sent everyone scurrying indoors. Staff handled it perfectly.
Great experience. Great food. Reasonably priced. Recommend it highly.
This is a simple and casual French inspired bistro. The menu offers various bistro staples that are sure to please anyone. The owner takes great pride in his place and he is attentively making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. It really is a very enjoyable place with great food and service.
My wife and I dined on Friday night in the garden. The food is excellent and the selection offered very good. The wine list always impresses me with the prices generally reasonable and selection reasonably broad. The service is great with no desire to rush. Still a really nice French restaurant in Chicago.
