What a refreshing experience sitting on the patio and being able to visit friends. Food was outstanding. Well worth the value.
Lovely space with excellent food and good value. Adam and staff are great
This is a special place for special occasions! We were in the patio on an absolutely perfect night, we were never rushed and everyone loved their food. Two of the four of us split a salad, all had our own entree and we all shared a dessert. The presentation is wonderful. It's simply a lovely experience.
Chez Joel is a wonderful experience. The food and atmosphere is amazing.
One of the most pleasant outdoor dining venues in the City. It was our pandemic go to restaurant.
We have been patrons of chez Joel for the past 6 years and have had dinner there multiple times. We had a reservation for last night (6/12/2021) at 8 pm. I had made reservations two weeks ago with the request for outside seating. It was a particularly lovely evening in Chicago last night . When we arrived at the restaurant I was informed that there was no longer outdoor seating… all the tables were taken. In fact they could not find the reservation which had already been confirmed by open table. My wife and I had asked a woman we work with to join us for dinner, who is unvaccinated and worried about COVID exposure. We ended up having to sit inside on this beautiful night, music blaring the whole evening (far too Loud and intrusive) the server was inept bringing the wrong salad on two separate occasions, abrupt in his manner, relatively unhelpful, and without an ounce of personality… something we were accustomed to at this restaurant. The food was at best mediocre, and our guest got some thing she did not want and ended up not eating. The management was utterly unsympathetic and at times rude when I asked why they had not even tried to accommodate our request for an outside seating. I suggest strongly that you avoid Chez Joel going forward Last night was absolutely our last time there.
On a fairly busy Saturday night we were disappointed with how slow the service was, our server having been sat three tables simultaneously and not given any support. Every step of the meal was delayed, from water to dessert menu. When entrees arrived, it was also pretty clear which dish was the holdup, the scallops coming out piping hot while two steaks and the fish were not at all, the frites and vegetables cool.
It was a surprisingly sub-par night at a very good restaurant where we will return without fear.
Always a great dinner! We love this restaurant!
5/5. One of the best in chicago
I would highly recommend Chez Joel, particularly as the day rolls into the evening on the patio. Each dish we had was excellent, from the Warm Brie appetizer to the dessert. We'll be back, and will bring others with us!
It was a perfect evening after seeing the Monet exhibit. Menu is just perfect size with wonderful choices. Servers and hosts were welcoming at all times. We will return.
Just in Chicago for a knee op - needed a restaurant close to the Medical center. This was perfect
We love the garden and the wonderful classic French food.
As always the food service is wonderful & a beautiful
Delicious French food. Everything that we ate was absolutely fantastic!
Gorgeous outstide patio. It was not in the top 10% of the French restaurants I’ve been to in the world, but it was still very good. Great service nice vibe etc. wonderful choice in the University Village area.
Couldn't have been better. Beautiful night for an evening on the gorgeous patio. Food was delicious for a reasonable price. Wait staff very knowledgeable and made us feel well cared for.
The pate was perfect as was the bouillabaisse, steak frites, and cocktails. French food of this quality is generally twice the price. My only quibble was walking into a semi empty restaurant and being told I had 90 mn. (Yes,l had made a 6:39 reservation) to complete my meal.
Neighborhood small restaurant with a great French food menu. The owner /chef prepares authentic french cuisine and the prices are reasonable for the fine food.
Great food and excellent service. This was our first time at Chez Joel and we will be back.
Maggie great server.one of our favorite place
The food was great. My husband and I ordered the Coq au Vin. It was amazing. It seems as if the portions were smaller than what we previously have had. Nonetheless, the meal was exceptional. I had mashed potatoes with my Coq au Vin which were also good. They also serve fresh bread. They have small but very nice outdoor eating area. I've not tried any of their other dishes but can say that if you like flavor and good French chicken, you can't go wrong with the Coq au Vin.
As usual, we had a great time. Food and service are the best! A beautiful night for patio dining.
The food was fantastic and the service was superb. It was our first time dining at Chez Joel (anniversary date) and we will certainly return. I had the duck and the orange sauce was delightful. My wife had the salmon, which she enjoyed. Maggie was terrific - she was there when needed but never hovered. We couldn't have asked for a better date night dinner. Thanks!
Delightful as always. The patio is a hidden gem.
This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago bar none. Food is always excellent and the service is exquisite. And the outdoor patio is lovely.
Went on Saturday night, great place for date or to take loved ones. Very sweet ambivalent and decor. Highly recommend outdoor seating area. Does not feel like you see in the city. Noise level is ideal, can enjoy each other’s conversation. They bring out homemade bread wrapped in linen cloth
Food excellent, service was great. Interior is a little stale, could use some updating.
Great service, great food, great atmosphere. A little loud but nice to see life back.
I’ve thought of a million things to say (all fabulous of course!) But to keep it simple, we had an amazing time! The entire experience was beautiful. The mussels were so so good. Will definitely be back!
Chez Joel never disappoints! I have always loved it. Great food and service.
Always a treat to come here.
Charming, spacious outdoor space. Since it was a cool night, space heaters kept us comfortable. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Waitstaff was attentive but unobtrusive. All in all, a delightful dining experience.
Good French food.
The food was excellent, as usual. The service is still rounding into shape post pandemic but we won’t hold this against them. This is a French dining experience so don’t come prepared to be out in under an hour. If you are in a hurry please let them know but be prepared to enjoy the company and the food at a leisurely pace. My one gnit is the wine selection by the glass. For someone who comes from a mixed family - she white and me red - I live for a good glass or two and the menu does not afford this. All considered a very nice evening.
We enjoyed a fine dinner outdoors. The patio heaters made the experience very pleasant. As usual, food and service were excellent.
Everything was perfect. We’ve been many times ans this was the best. Ambiance is great. Service attentive, but not rushed. Food was fantastic. One of our favorite places in the city for an intimate dinner.
Chez Joel food is consistently excellent. We ate on their outdoor patio, with its high brick walls it affords a level of privacy and quiet that many outdoor dining spots in Chicago do not have.
Delicious! Escargot,Mussels and rack of lamb-beautiful Sunday dinner
Our Mothers day meal was very good. We sat outside socially distancing/ Have I made fiffty somdthing characters yet?
